Jodo is a form of modern budo (way of the warrior) that is based on the traditional short staff techniques of the samurai, who ruled Japan during the Tokugawa Period from 1603 to 1868.

Jodo techniques allow one to control and subdue an opponent who is wielding a sword, using non-lethal techniques.

The legendary founder of jodo, Muso Gonnosuke, was said to have defeated the great swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.

Jodo techniques developed to control unruly samurai to keep the peace, and, in fact, Japanese policemen train in jodo to this day.

- Class Overview -

Experience a soft or yin approach to Ki or life-force cultivation

Flowing movements stretch the body & stimulate the meridian systems

Tachi zen – standing meditation – develops rich & abundant Ki flow

Suitable for all ages ,especially seniors, for longevity, balance, stress relief & abundant life-force

Ki development or cultivation involves working with one’s ki or life-force to fortify, strengthen & rejuvenate the body & mind.

It includes practices done seated, standing & those involving gentle, flowing movements that are usually coordinated with the breath.

Seated practice can be thought of as a type of seated meditation & in this way is similar to Zen meditation but also involves visualization, intention & accessing of inner energy flows. Often a seated practice can end or start with a quiet sitting which is similar to the practice of Shikantaza.

Standing practice is often referred to as standing meditation – sometimes known as taichi Zen & involves a relaxed coordination of body, breath & mind along with the holding of specific postures or shapes.

This practice appears deceptively simple from the outside but although not difficult involves a deep inner cultivation of generous amounts of ki or life force.

Also included is a flowing set of gentle movement practices that incorporate stretching & opening the physical as well as the energy body. These are combined with attention to breathing to integrate this process.

Integrating these simple practices over time can benefit the body & mind immensely – helping to reduce stress, promote health & longeveity & super charge one’s Ki or life force.

Ki is free & available for cultivation !

- Class Overview -

Japanese ink painting (Sumi-e) and Calligraphy
Sumi-e is a black and white painting so you have to focus on how many shades you can create by diluting black ink with water. And the soft brush enables children to create variety of marks. Sumi-e appears to be simple but requires greater concentration and invention in the process. Calligraphy is the graceful artistic representation of written characters using the same tools for Sumi-e.

We share the glimpse of the philosophy of Sumi-e and the beauty of Calligraphy in the course.

Origami
Origami came from the Japanese words “Oru” meaning “to fold” and “Kami” meaning “paper.” It is a wonderful experience for children to see a piece of paper gets transformed into an animal, flower or something else. There’s a “Tanabata :Star Festival on July 7th in Japan. Children make decorations and wish cards for this Festival.
The recipient of the doll fills in one eye upon setting the goal, then the other upon fulfilling it. In this way, every time they see the one-eyed Daruma, they recall the goal. You promise to give him full sight once the goal is accomplished.

Bertille de Baudinière at Resobox Japanese Gallery presents her Green Earth paintings from 1989 in Tokyo together with her recent work in New York on the same theme. Her earlier work was inspired by the inherent harmony with nature found in Japanese culture. Twenty years later, Bertille looks at this idea differently, in light of a growing environmental crisis and in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.

In Baudinière ‘s original series of paintings, Green Earth refers to “a Nihonga pigment of the same name. Symbol of the link that unites man and nature, Green Earth celebrates the cosmic dimension of Japanese Buddhism, the essential idea that man and the smallest part of grass are both part of a whole….. The artist paints the ideal space of a harmonious universe, of a calm living organism.”

Her recent work takes a broader view of “ Green Earth”. Baudinière writes :

The recent anniversary of the tsunami and Fukushima disaster made me aware of my time in Japan where I completed in 1989 my Green Earth series of paintings.

My exhibit “Green Earth “ is a continuation of my research during the 1980’s when global warming was not a real issue. Even if Japan was already covered with electric wires, the landscape of this island was paradise and the essence of beauty.

Part of the proceeds from the art sales in the exhibition will be donated to JEN, non-governmental organization for the victims of Tsunami and Earthquake happened in Japan 2011. Thank you for the support of Ms. Keiko Kiyama and Ms. Hamasaka from JEN.

Bertille de Baudinière

Painter, Bertille de Baudinière, was born in Saint Malo, France. She received her diploma from the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Paris in 1982. In 1986, she was granted a research scholarship by the Japanese government to attend the National University of Music and Arts in Tokyo. Additionally, she got her MFA in painting from there in 1990.

Over the course of her creative career, Baudinière has distinguished herself and her work with an aesthetic practice on three continents through its diverse nature and the integration of social issues in her art. She has always tried new ways to express her creative interests. She experiments with new techniques and uses different mediums in order to explore recurring themes in the work. This keeps it new and exciting; which is evident in her current Green Earth exhibit. The work is colourful, vibrant and powerful.

This active creative approach has led to interest in Baudinière’s work from many different audiences in different places all over the world. She has exhibited internationally at galleries and museums including the Islip Art Museum, Long Island; Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha; Tomura Gallery, Tokyo; Fondation des Etats-Unis, Paris; Zurdorfer Wehrturm Museum, Cologne; and Salon d’automne in China amongst others. The result of this is that her art has been seen and acquired by many. Baudinière’s work is in the following collections: the Museum of Landau, Germany; Fondation Danielle Mitterand; Bemis Center; Fondation des Etats-Unis; and the General Confederation of Labor in France.

The artist has been reviewed and featured in various publications such as Nice-Matin, the Omaha World Herald and the Cologne Stadt-Anzeiger. She was also featured in the Unesco Editions Collections. Her paintings have appeared in three issues of Le Monde Diplomatique, including the abstract acrylic, Violence, used as the cover illustration after the September 11 attacks in the United States.

In addition to painting, Baudinière has completed other kinds of projects within her oeuvre. For example, she designed the set for Antonin Artaud’s, Le Samourai in Tokyo in1988. She has also completed many videos in conjunction with her exhibits. The most recent of which was Blue earth in 2011.

Finally, throughout her career Baudinière has been active in bringing art to a wider audience. She has organized many group shows for fellow artists and she has taught art to children, and adults. She is currently serving as the curator of Green Queens, an environment-themed postcard project at the L.I.C. Kids’ Art Festival.

Fundamentally, for any of the events that feels conflicting in life, there exists only a neutral standpoint where there is neither good nor bad. In spite of this, it is your mind which signifies that it is “a problem.”

Therefore, unless you transcend your mind, make a shift towards a viewpoint of a higher dimension and go into a deeper state of calmness, you won’t be able to solve any of your problems, nor will you be able to attain tranquility or happiness.

“Transcending your mind” is precisely nothing but “Emptying your mind.” I have discovered the way to achieve this state in “The Sacred Himalayan teachings.” By mastering this teaching through rigorous ascetic training, I am now here to share with all of you, the essence of how to empty your mind.

About Yogmata Keiko Aikawa

Yogmata Keiko Aikawa was born in Yamanashi, Japan, and has long been on a quest to explore the human condition. A Yogi since the age of 15, she has developed and organized what she calls Aikawa Yoga since the 1970s, and is working to spread this yoga in Japan. Her love of humanity has also led her to understand three things: the essence of human beings; that it is possible to show them the power of self-healing; and that human beings can transmit Anugraha Shakti to heal others.

In 1985, she met the legendary great master, Hari Baba. Since then, she has undergone austere and rigorous training at altitudes of between 5,000 and 6,000 meters in the Himalayas. Under the guidance of Hari Baba, Yogmata Keiko Aikawa is the first non-Indian woman to realize the ultimate state of samadhi – a spiritual level that transcends the state of Awareness and in which a state of Oneness is attained with the Godhead.

Today, Yogmata Keiko Aikawa is an author, public speaker and highly regarded and well-respected Siddha Master. She has performed samadhi at India’s sacred locations as well as at the Maha Kumbh Mela, a sacred event that occurs only once every 144 years.

Yogmata Keiko Aikawa’s tireless contributions, remarkable presence and teachings have since been recognized and awarded; and in 2007 she was bestowed – by the largest spiritual Austerities Association in India, Juna Akara – the title “Mahamandaleshwar” (The Supreme Master of the Universe). In 2009, His Holiness the Dalai Lama even wrote the introductory note to her book, A Himalayan Master’s Simple Way to Realization.

Yogmata Keiko Aikawa has been featured across all media channels, including CNN, BBC, The Japan Times, and The Times of India.

Yoko Yabe is a Japanese illustrator and painter. In 2004, she came to America to study media arts and animation at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.

After graduating in 2007, she started working as a 3D designer at an architectural company in Japan, but soon realized that her real passion was to become an illustrator and a painter. She worked as a freelance illustrator for a film company, at a t-shirt factory, in publishing — and more — creating concept art, film posters, t-shirt designs, to name just a few.

Mostly drawing women in her illustrations and paintings, and expressing the distinct personalities, lifestyles, and cultural backgrounds of each, her style features both traditional and modern Japanese arts. Ms. Yabe’s technique ranges from traditional canvas paintings to modern digital design.
