Janna Giacoppo is a self taught photographer who started taking pictures on an old Nikon that her grandfather gave her for her 7th birthday. Her love of photography grew into a passion for filmmaking, so after a year abroad, she went to film school to study directing in Vancouver B.C. She has had a varied photographic career ranging from actors and models to album covers and Broadway productions. She has been based in Los Angeles for the duration of her career but works in many different cities and her work can be seen in various publications internationally.

This particular series of bubble photographs represents a new chapter of her work. While on a diving trip, she noticed and became fascinated with the play of light through the bubbles from her and other divers regulators as they floated towards the oceans surface. Drawn to to their almost outer space-like quality, she wanted to explore in them the idea of space further, both inner and outer, and how the ocean hold’s the possibility of both. While working on the images, she discovered that each one had it’s own perspective and let that dictate the colors and textures that emerged. In them she is able to to see the necessity for all of life’s emotions. Changing only colors and sometimes exposure, the image is left exactly as it was originally shot, creating what can appear to be a hybrid of both a photograph and a painting. Where her signature would normally be on a piece, instead the longitude and latitude of the underwater location is handwritten so as to simply mark that moment, that expression, without judgement or opinion. Their formal titles are written on the backs of the images so as to let the viewer be free to have their own reaction and experience to each piece.
