- Class Overview -
Origami
Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques without cutting or gluing. In this lesson, We will make “Hina-Ningyo (A set of ornamental doll)”. “Hina-ningyo” is displayed at Japanese Doll festival, March 3rd.

Okiagari Koboshi (Daruma doll)
Okiagari Koboshi is a Japanese traditional doll. The toy is made from Hariko (paper mache) and is designed so that its weight causes it to return to an upright position if it is knocked over. Okiagari Koboshi is considered a good-luck charm and symbol of perseverance and resilience. In this lesson, we will make our own character doll.

Folding Book
Folding book is a traditional Japanese notebook for literature. We make a blank book and paint on their own story without words. Folding book encourages children to the unique way of telling story.

Crafts
Making “Koinobori” with paper and watercolor for Tango no sekku (Children’s Day). Children’s day is Japanese national holiday on May 5th. Koinobiri is a “carp streamer” for celebrating Children’s happiness and growing up healthy.

Instructor
Chizuco Sophia Yw is an awarded visual artist based on New York born in Japan. She has experienced teaching in Art and Japanese. She taught art at high school and technical college in Japan. Also She was a teacher of kindergarten and 6th grade at Japanese School in NJ and NY.
She is looking forward to working with delightful children.
