SUMMARY:Paint your own Daruma and Fortune Cat
DESCRIPTION:Daruma\, a hollow\, round\, Japanese traditional doll modeled after Bodhidharma\, the founder of the Zen tradition of Buddhism\, is now widely known these days thanks to Japanese comics and animations. Users of Daruma first make a wish and paint/draw in one eye on the doll. After their wish is granted\, they fill in the other eye. It is a very popular good luck charm in Japan. \nFortune cats/lucky cats are also a very popular form of a good luck charm. Depending on the color and the side of the arm it is raising\, it can mean to bring people luck or money. \nIn this workshop\, you will paint your own Daruma and Fortune Cat figures made of paper mache\, or washi paper. These traditional good luck charms are normally much larger in size\, but the ones you will paint will be smaller. For centuries\, these are still very much loved in the Japanese culture. \nLet’s make a one of a kind good luck charm for yourself and grant a wish! \n\nSee artist and instructor\, Hiromu Moulinette (Morine)’s current exhibition\,  「掌の宇宙」 Cosmos on the Palm starting June 22 at RESOBOX LIC! \nAlso check out Hiromu’s workshop on Asobi no Tsugi ~ Fixing Pottery and Ceramics using Traditional Japanese Methods this June 22nd and 23rd at 4:15pm!

SUMMARY:Asobi no Tsugi ~ Fixing Pottery and Ceramics using Traditional Japanese Methods
DESCRIPTION:There is a traditional way to fix broken or cracked pottery and ceramics using a natural tree lacquer in Japan. In this workshop\, you will learn the history and the techniques\, as well as actually trying some of the basic methods using easier materials. \nA broken piece is glued\, then colored with urushi (natural tree lacquer)\, and often decorated with a powdered precious metal. There are several ways to work with it. You will learn the basic procedure and also learn the most basic techniques\, with substitute materials\, which are widely used and easier to handle. \nPlease bring a cup or a dish or any other ceramic or pottery that is chipped or has a crack. Let’s give it a second life. \n\nSee artist and instructor\, Hiromu Moulinette (Morine)’s current exhibition\,  「掌の宇宙」 Cosmos on the Palm starting June 22 at RESOBOX LIC! \nAlso check out Hiromu’s workshop on creating your own Daruma and Fortune Cat this June 22nd and 23rd at 2pm!
