DESCRIPTION:November 5 & 6 · Reserve your time between 11:00 am and 6:50 pm \nIn Japan\, more and more people are choosing their own funeral portrait while they are still alive. \nAn iei is the portrait placed at a Japanese funeral\, the image by which a person is remembered. Traditionally chosen in a hurry by family\, it is increasingly something people choose themselves: a portrait that shows who they are\, taken on their own terms. It is less about preparing for death than about honoring the person you are today. \nThis is a portrait session built around you. New York photographer Tokio Kuniyoshi and hair and makeup artist Michael work together to bring out your own features\, style\, and character. The result is a portrait that celebrates who you are today\, and one the people you love will always have. \nEach 30-minute session begins with hair and makeup (20 minutes)\, followed by your portrait session (10 minutes). In Japan\, it is a reminder to live. \nFor two days\, RESOBOX becomes a gathering place for artists\, thinkers\, and makers from Japan and New York\, exploring life through the lens of death. This is not a somber event. It is an invitation to slow down\, look closely\, and ask what it means to live well. \nThe festival opens on November 5 at 10:00 am with The Art of Living with Death: a live encoffining ceremony by nōkanshi Koki Kimura\, performed alongside a live calligraphy performance by Taisan Tanaka\, set against a coffin inspired by Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Together with his father\, Kimura served as a technical advisor on the Academy Award–winning film Departures. \nAcross both days\, you can explore: \n\nArt exhibition by more than 20 Japanese artists and craftspeople\nTalks with speakers including a Zen teacher\, a death doula\, and a death-literacy researcher\nCoffin experience\, open to all ticket holders: lie down\, close your eyes\, and see how it feels. SUMMARY:Mizuhiki: Japanese Decorative Knots – Memento Mori Jewelry
DESCRIPTION:In Japan\, the knot on an envelope says what words cannot. \nMizuhiki are fine cords made of twisted washi paper\, tied into knots that decorate gifts and envelopes for life’s turning points. They also appear at funerals and memorial services: black-and-white or silver knots adorn the condolence envelopes offered to the bereaved. Some knots are tied so that they can never be undone. On a condolence envelope\, this carries the wish that such sorrow will never be repeated; at a wedding\, the same knot stands for a bond that lasts. \nIn this workshop\, mizuhiki instructor Satoi Adams\, who has taught in Boston\, New York\, and Tokyo since 2018\, guides you through the basic knots and their meanings.
