DESCRIPTION:Everyone knows Japanese cuisine is filled with delicious dishes and healthy flavors! To create a tasty Japanese dish\,  a lot of “crafting” is done in the cooking process to create a more enjoyable and perfected meal. In this event\, we will hold three workshops on the theme of “crafting and experiencing familiar Japanese food.” \nWhat you will be doing in this workshop:\n \n\nLearn about traditional Japanese food\, such as onigiri and miso soup\nMake your own ORINIGIRI\, decoration seaweed and miso balls\nAdmire and take pictures of your creations\n\nORINIGIRI\nORINIGIRI is a new type of art (and way of eating!) that combines the fun features of “Origami” and “Onigiri (Rice balls).” The huge difference between Onigiri (rice balls) and ORINIGIRI is whether is how it entertains you through the creation. ORINIGIRI includes a folding process as a form of entertainment\, which is meant to be a fun experience. You will often see this kind of entertaining making process not in only food but in the whole culture of Japan. \n \nDecoration Seaweed\nJapanese people enjoy cutting seaweed into cute artistic shapes and patterns. In this workshop\, you can try creating your own form of seaweed art work by using craft punchers and colorful rice. \n \nMiso ball\nMiso ball is round ball made of miso and other Japanese ingredients. Miso soup can be made easily by melting the miso. SUMMARY:Japanese Sweets Workshop Vol. 1 Dorayaki (Bean Paste Pancake)
DESCRIPTION:Dorayaki is a traditional Japanese sweet that is made of azuki (red bean paste) sandwiched in between two small pancakes. As a common Japanese snack\, dorayaki has a mildly sweet taste perfect for all ages! \nSince sweet azuki paste takes quite a long time to make\, we will be using ready-made red bean paste in this class. Each Japanese pancake is made of flour\, egg\, honey\, sugar\, mirin (Japanese seasoning) and baking soda. Several pancake fillings will be prepared and participants will be able to choose their own favorite filling! Participants will also be able to mark their dorayaki with a cute symbol. DESCRIPTION:落語界の異端! 立川流真打 立川こしら師匠、ニューヨーク初落語会\n立川志らくの一番弟子。しかし、師匠の志らくが暖めておいた高座名「志ら乃（シラノ・ド・ベルジュラックを参照のこと）」を与えてもらえなかった。（尚、「志ら乃」は現在弟弟子が名乗っている）。ラジオでは志らくの弟子であることをときどき強調するが普段はほとんど口にしない。 \n前座当時は談志門下に雷門獅篭（当時・立川志加吾）がおり、同じアパートの階違いで住んでいたこともあってか、彼の漫画『風とマンダラ』の登場人物として、作者と立川キウイに次ぐ出演回数で登場していた。 \n地毛で短髪の落語家の多い中、金髪、長髪、茶髪など不定期にヘアアレンジを行う。一度スプレーで白髪にした経歴がある。\n先輩の落語家にも反抗するため、師匠・志らく同様、落語界に敵も多い。 \n独自のページデザインや映像製作などを手がける「合同会社第プロ」の主宰。 \n同門の立川志ららと組んだ漫才コンビ「カラッペタンズ」としてやDJとして番組を持つ。 \nコカ・コーラがトレードマークになるくらいの無類のコーラ好き。手ぬぐいにコカ・コーラのデザインをもじったものが存在する（落語で使用されるめくりなどの寄席文字は基本的に名前を縦書きなので、「こしら」を「こーら」と読み間違える人も少なくない）。 \n真打昇進のニュースが流れた正に同時期、大師匠である談志が死去した。よってこしらと弟弟子の志ら乃のみが、談志存命中に真打昇進が決まっていた孫弟子となった。 \nゲームマニアで最近では艦隊これくしょんを無課金でユーザーランキング80位に食い込み横須賀鎮守府の提督を与えられた。\nGoogle Niantic Labsが提供するスマートフォンゲーム「Ingress」のプレイヤーであることを公表しているほか、Ingressのあるあるネタを用いた落語を2015年6月20日、宮城県仙台市太白区あすと長町 ゼビオアリーナ仙台で行われた公式イベントの「Persepolis XM Anomaly Primary: Tohoku Japan」で披露した。 \nPokemon GOもベータ版からプレイ。地域限定ポケモンをゲットするためと銘打ち、落語の海外公演を行っている。\n（ウィキべディアより抜粋） \n\n\n\n発起人より~バッグひとつで来てくれる師匠\n\n\n\n\n\n\n関西出身なので江戸落語については本当に知らない。ここ数 年の落語を聴くきっかけは、動画の立川談志師匠『芝浜』だっ た。ポッドキャストやら動画やらとバーチャル体験のみ。直近 で唯一観たのがヒューストン落語会での立川こしら師匠。 このこしら師匠の落語会を行きがかり上自分が開くことにな った。 \n渡航費滞在費、師匠持ちという初回開催者への特典付き。ただ、発起人が人望人脈ゼロ、好きなものそれはオフトゥ ンくらいの行動力で、他の地域の落語会の結束度とはけた違 いのマイナススタートだ。 \nじゃあやめとけよですが、どうしてもこしら師匠の落語が聴きたい。それも師匠が初めて踏み込む 場所での落語が聴けるのは、ファンにとって一生一度のチャ ンスなのである。何が聴けるのか、目撃したい。そしてこの面白さを、一緒にシ ェアする方が来てくれないかと心底願っている。 普段暮らしていて、カッコいいとか胸を打つセリフやシーンは見聞きしない。それが日常生活だ。だけど、師匠のSNSを覗く と毎日何かをしている。だいたい何かを売っている。それは地 方の落語会でぽかっと空いた1日であったり、自らの弟子の命 名権をオークションにかけたり、UBER EATSに突然登録して自 ら自転車に乗りフードデリバリーしたり、コメ作りをしていた りする。 \n師匠の行動じたいが、与太郎やら、頼れる兄貴、お殿 様が一話で登場する、落語そのもののスピード感を感じて、目 が離せない。 1月19日にはその特異なライフスタイルが詰まった本『その落 語家、住所不定。タンスはアマゾン、家のない生き方』(光文 社)が出版される。身軽すぎて住処さえ持たない落語家に、一度会いに来てください。 \n\n\n\n2019年立川こしらニューヨーク落語会運営責任者SASA SHUKO\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMultiple talented Rakugo Star Performer\, Kosira Tatekawa\, also a master of Pokemon Go and Ingress\, will be holding his first show in New York! DESCRIPTION:About “Karappo” (Live Art Performance)\nI\, the painter\, Ryoko has done her live painting with various DJ\, musicians\, make-up & hair artists\, and dancers. I’ve decided to perform these pieces with drummer Matsu titled “karappo.” I have known Matsu for around ten years and have always admired his performances and respect his feelings for music. I’m very glad to have this chance to perform alongside him. \n“Karappo” means “empty” in Japanese. Sometimes thinking too much may break a person. Only genuineness is eternal. It is important to just feel. \nWe aren’t attaching any themes to “Karappo.” RESOBOX is opening their space for us. The audience’s breaths\, voices\, and noises will make the air there. The air is going to make Matsu’s sounds. The sounds is going to make Ryoko’s art.  \nI’ll put my all on the canvas in the moment.

SUMMARY:Vegan Japanese Cooking Workshop: Cook with Miso to Fuel Your Body and Mind
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, you will learn how to cook with miso\, an ancient Japanese superfood which is made from protein-rich soybeans. Miso is an essential base of Japanese cooking which has the saltiness\, sweetness\, and umami all in one. The class setting will be a small group of up to six people for a more interactive\, hands-on experience for all participants. \nThe dishes we are cooking together will be Miso-glazed Tofu Bowl and Aunti Mieko’s GMMD (Goma Miso Mayo Dip). The recipe was created with ingredients that you can find in the majority of local grocery stores that carry asian ingredients. It was also designed in a way that you can recreate the dishes at home using the techniques you learn in the class. We will be cooking with hand-picked fresh organic produce and non-GMO ingredients. \nIn the beginning of the class\, we will go over basic types of miso\, its flavor profiles and characteristics\, health benefits of miso and fermented food. Then we will cook the dishes together using other Japanese cooking essentials like soy sauce\, mirin (cooking wine) and tofu. At the end of the class we will sit down at a table and enjoy the food we made. If the participants are interested\, the instructor will show off a few food photography hacks using your smartphone for beautiful instagram photos! \n

Grimm fairy tales might be similar in that every story has a moral or lesson. This time\, we would like to introduce the lessons of Japanese fairy tales by focusing on Japan’s most famous and popular “Momotaro (Peach Boy)” fairy tale.  Onigiri (rice balls) often appeared in Japanese fairy tales\, and played a role in expressing a simple life at the time. We hope that the collaboration between ORINIGIRI\, a modern type of new art from Japan\, and the traditional Japanese fairy tale will trigger your interest in Japanese culture. These Kazari Maki-Zushi (sushi with special designs and decorations) are not only delicious to eat\, but also cute and fun to make! We’ll be creating two kinds of holiday sushi for this class with natural ingredients (as listed below) that taste great\, just like regular sushi! By manipulating the natural colors of each ingredient\, you can design an interesting and delicious sushi piece. The cute designs on these holiday sushi can be made easily\, so no sushi-making experience is required and it’s a good way to impress your friends at upcoming holiday parties. \nIngredients\nRose \n\nSushi rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nBeets\nSeaweed\nRed pickled ginger\nTobikko (flying fish roe)\nTarako (pollock roe)\nEggs\nSpinach\n\nHeart Sushi \n\nSushi rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nBeets\nEggs\nSeaweed\n\nWhat is Kazari Maki-Zushi?\nKazari Maki-Zushi is a patterned or decorative sushi that is derived from the several sushi techniques such as Saiku sushi and Futomaki sushi. It is undoubtedly sushi\, but the appearance and design of each roll are filled with endless possibilities! A Kazari Maki-Zushi’s design can be anything – flowers\, fruit\, animals\, words and even logos! Whatever your creativeness allows\, Kazari Maki-Zushi can be almost anything. Using various natural colors of ingredients you see every day\, Kazari Maki-Zushi is a fun way to play around with sushi designs. This food/art form has been developed for over 150 years\, and still\, new ideas are created everyday in Japan. And it’s even a great way to show off your artistic skills at parties or potlucks! \nAlthough it looks difficult\, this decorative sushi is very simple and easy to make! No prior experience is necessary as it involves a different process than creating regular sushi. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is much like building with Legos\, where each piece is stacked to make a picture!  \nKazari Maki-Sushi represents an important unique aspect in Japanese food –  not only in taste\, but also in the beautiful visual appearance that serves to please those who enjoy it. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is also a great way to enjoy company\, whether it be friends or family and is especially popular with kids! SUMMARY:On the Road to Dunhuang: Music from the Dunhuang Caves\, the Ottoman Empire\, and Medieval Spain
DESCRIPTION:Founded and co-directed by Tomoko Sugawara and August Denhard\, the Eurasia Consort brings together two specialists in the ancient musical traditions of East Asia\, the Middle East\, and Europe. Through their research\, teaching\, and performances\, they seek a common understanding of the world’s great music traditions along the ancient Silk Road. \nThe Silk Road was an interlocking trade route that connected to the Far East\, Central Asia\, the Middle East\, North Africa and Europe. For about 1\,000 years it was a conduit not only for trade\, but for religions\, ideas\, innovations\, and music. \nDuring the Tang Dynasty\, the Chinese court loved foreign music\, in particular Sogdian music and dance. Sogdians were merchants who controlled trade on the Silk road. From their homeland north of Iran they had set up trading colonies in China. Their masculine dance with high jumps was known as “the Sogdian whirl.” Its music was played by small ensembles comprised of harp\, lute. flute and drums. These are shown on many sixth-century Sogdian sarcophagi\, and wall paintings\, in China. \nTang Dynasty music manuscripts have survived in Japan and China. It is from the first  millennium. By comparison\, the oldest Middle Eastern music is relatively recent (the 13th century)\, and so is the Ottoman repertoire. \nThe concert imagines sounds of the ancient Silk Road\, taking the listener from the caves at Dunhuang\, continuing through the Middle East\, and arriving in Europe. This food/art form has been developed for over 150 years\, and still\, new ideas are created everyday in Japan. And it’s even a great way to show off your artistic skills at parties or potlucks! \nAlthough it looks difficult\, this decorative sushi is very simple and easy to make! No prior experience is necessary as it involves a different process than creating regular sushi. DESCRIPTION:The Artist Talk organized in conjunction with Yasue Maetake’s exhibition will include guest speaker\, Nataša Prljević\, artist and co-founder of HEKLER\, an interdisciplinary collaborative platform that critically examines hospitality and conflict. Prljević is currently the Executive and Curatorial Assistant at Residency Unlimited (RU). \nTogether they will discuss the creative mechanisms behind Maetake’s material-oriented practice\, her encounters with extrapolations from natural and built environments\, and their organic and anthropomorphic translation in Maetake’s sculptures and installations. These processes will be addressed through an examination of the boundary between materials’ agency to shape itself and the artist’s inherent need to be in control over the outcome. Can the boundary even be defined?
