SUMMARY:Inami Woodcarving — A 250-Year Living Tradition\, with Master Nambu Hakuun III
DESCRIPTION:Originating in Toyama Prefecture\, Inami woodcarving (井波彫刻) developed in the Edo period during the restoration of the local Zuisen-ji Temple and flourished alongside temple carpentry and the tradition of ranma (transom) carving. Distinguished by extraordinary depth\, precision\, and spiritual artistry\, this 250-year tradition has endured despite the pressures of rapid modernization. Today\, Inami’s artisans apply their mastery\, shaped through a rigorous five-year live-in apprenticeship\,to classical temple work as well as traditional and contemporary commissions. \nThis program begins at 3:00 PM with a screening of the 60-minute documentary Voices in the Grain: Inami Woodcarving\, produced by Poiesis in collaboration with the craftsmen community in Toyama. The film offers a rare and intimate portrait of the carvers\, their history\, and the lived philosophy behind the craft. \nFollowing the screening\, Master Carver Nambu Hakuun III\, one of Inami’s foremost artisans\, will introduce the history of the craft and the lineage of his own workshop\, highlighting major works he has created across Japan. He will then guide the audience through each stage of the carving process\, from sketching on washi paper to rough carving and detailed finishing\, and present his newly created work\, Bridge Between Japan and the U.S.\, which intertwines Japanese and American motifs as a gesture of cultural connection. \nThe demonstration portion will be interactive\, offering attendees the rare opportunity to try carving by hand under the master’s guidance and to handle carving tools used in the craft. \nThe event concludes with an open Q&A\, inviting participants to engage directly with the artist and reflect on the future of this living tradition.

SUMMARY:Sweets for Every Season: Nerikiri Wagashi Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The April 5th workshop will be taught by Yuki Sakura\, who we’re delighted to welcome to RESOBOX! \nWagashi\, or Japanese confections\, boast a rich history spanning hundreds of years. Among the most exquisite are nerikiri\, hand-sculpted sweets in various flavors and styles\, reflecting nature’s beauty and often modeled on seasonal scenes. These edible works of art are famous worldwide and accessible to everyone\, not just masters. \nOur classes teach traditional techniques for creating these beautiful confections\, from shaping the dough to adding intricate details. Guided by our instructors\, you’ll gain a deep appreciation for this ancient art form. \n\nIn this session\, you will create three different cherry blossom (桜) designs—an iconic symbol of spring in Japan. Through shaping petals\, layering colors\, and capturing the softness of the season\, you will bring springtime to life with your own hands.\nYou will learn the characteristics of Nerikiri\, its ingredients\, and traditional techniques while crafting your own original designs. This workshop offers more than the joy of tasting Wagashi; it gives you the experience of creating edible art\, engaging your senses of sight\, touch\, and taste. Simple hand movements— pressing\, pinching\, layering — become acts of sculpture and painting\, turning the creative process itself into an artistic experience. Through this hands-on practice\, you will discover the unique beauty of Japanese food culture.\nAt the end of the class\, you’ll take home the Nerikiri you lovingly crafted yourself. We hope you’ll share them with your family and friends—revisiting the stories and moments from the workshop as you admire and enjoy the sweets you created with your own hands.\n\n  \nWhat Makes Us Different? \nHands-on experience: All the ingredients and materials are prepared\, and containers for taking them home are provided. You only need to walk into the classroom and leave with four beautiful wagashi. \nPersonal attention: We believe in providing personalized attention to each of our students\, with our instructors offering individualized guidance and support. \nCommunity atmosphere: Cooking is always more fun with friends! Our classes offer a warm and welcoming environment where you can connect with other sweet-making enthusiasts and share your love for Nerikiri. \n \n

SUMMARY:Suminagashi: An Art of Irreplaceable Moments
DESCRIPTION:Discover the timeless beauty of Suminagashi(墨流し)\, the ancient Japanese art of marbling. Originating in Japan more than 800 years ago\, Suminagashi literally means “floating ink.” This elegant technique was first enjoyed in the Heian period (794–1185) as a courtly pastime\, where artists and nobles would marvel at the delicate\, ever-changing patterns created on water. \nIn this class\, you will learn how to gently drop ink onto the surface of water and guide the ripples with your breath\, brushes\, or even the subtlest movements of air. The resulting designs are then transferred onto washi paper and even onto fabric items such as handkerchiefs\, creating one-of-a-kind works of art. \nBecause the process is simple\, the class is fun for a variety of ages and skill levels. Each print captures a fleeting moment\, never to be repeated\, embodying the Japanese aesthetic of impermanence and beauty in transience. Children aged 8 and above are also welcome to participate. \nWhether you are interested in traditional arts\, meditation through creative practice\, or simply wish to explore a new form of expression\, this class offers a unique opportunity to connect with history while creating your own modern interpretations of this ancient craft.
