DESCRIPTION:RESOBOX Gallery\, a Japanese cultural center\, is planning to hold a “World Amigurumi Exhibition” starting December 12\, 2014.\nThe event page: https://resobox.com/amigurumi-world-14/\nOur goal is to completely fill our gallery space with at least 3\,000 amigurumi. We want to turn the gallery into an “amigurumi room”\, filled to the brim with cuddly and cute! This is a unique exhibition in that it’s not displaying an individual artist\, but a concept. The concept\, amigurumi\, is a culture that began in Japan\, but is now cherished by crocheters all over the world. We were so inspired by the amount of amigurumi artists out there that we decided to embark on a journey to create an exhibition showcasing the united\, global love of this cute craft! \nBut we need your help! This is quite a feat and one crocheter can’t do it alone. We need amigurumi contributions from crocheters everywhere to make this exhibition happen! \n\nBasic Exhibit Information\n\nDuration: December 12\, 2014 to February 28\, 2015\nLocation: RESOBOX Gallery in New York (41-26 27th St\, Long Island City\, NY 11101) / www.resobox.com\nIt would be great if you could come to NY during the exhibition\, but you don’t have to. However\, we can’t accept amigurumi based on licensed characters. \n– I didn’t create the patterns for my pieces. \nPlease check the original creator’s website. Normally\, there are some comments about if you can sell the pieces based on their pattens. We will only accept works that are originals or have the permission from the original creator. \n– If my amigurumi arrive at RESOBOX after the November 30th deadline because of a post delay\, is that okay? \nOur exhibition starts on December 12th\, so we will still have 12 days after the end of November\, but just in case something happens in customs\, we are asking participants to send their pieces by the end of November. Moreover\, December 12th is our opening party\, so we’d like to have the most amount of pieces by then\, but we WILL accept more pieces after that. \n– Commission \nThe commission that the gallery takes varies depending on the number of pieces to be exhibited. \n1-5 pieces: 50% commission to the gallery \n6-10: 40% \n11-20: 35% \n21-50: 25% \n51-75: 15% \n76-100: 5% \n– May I send all the things for gift-wrapping the amigurumi (paper bag\, ribbons\, etc…)? \nWe will gift-wrap your amigurumi when a sale occurs. Unfortunately\, we can’t accept custom gift-wrapping from each participant. Thank you for your understanding. \n– Can I include my own tag? \nWe will attach a small tag to each amigurumi with each artist’s shop name\, contact info\, baby safe or not\, and price. But\, if your amigurumi already have a tag\, that’s okay too. Moreover\, we will add the same tag information on our web page as well. \n– Who will bear the shipping and return shipping costs if my items aren’t sold? \nArtists are responsible for all shipping costs (to and from New York). Unsold pieces will be returned to you. The gallery will not buy your pieces. We will first calculate the cost of the shipping of your unsold pieces and the profit that you make during the exhibition. And then\, if there is a surplus on your side\, we will send the unsold pieces as well as the profit that you make to your account through PayPal or bank wire. If not\, once we confirm the payment received from you\, we will send unsold pieces back to you. You need to pay to us the cost of shipping from NY to your place. Once we confirm the payment received to our account from you\, we will ship your unsold items back to you. \n– May I send the same character with a different color scheme? Do the pieces submitted all have to be different\, or can they be duplicates of the same piece?   \nDuplicates are totally fine whether they are the exact same or different colors/styles. \n– Is it possible to send business cards to go with the amigurumi to gain exposure? \nWe apologize\, but we can’t accept flyers or business cards from each artist. However\, if you attach your contact/store information on the tag of your amigurumi\, that is completely fine. If you don’t\, we will put a small tag on each piece and write the price\, your name\, and your contact information (e.g. email address\, website address). \n– How will you establish the retail prices? \nEach artist can decide the price of each of their pieces. After we receive your price list and amigurumi contributions\, we will contact you if we believe a price is inappropriate. (If you don’t hear from us\, please assume that your prices are okay with us.) \n– Will there be any kind of opening reception? \nYes\, of course! As our gallery does every month\, we will have an opening party on December 12th (time is yet to be decided). DESCRIPTION:Dance Performance and Lecture on the Burns Archive Collection\nVisit Resobox’s exhibition of 19th century photographs of Japan from the Burns Archive\, and view the subjects of rice\, silk and tea from an entirely new perspective. There will be a short nihonbuyo dance performance by one of our senior students\, Yoshiko Furuse before the lecture. Then\, Helen Moss will take a look at the products and the photographs represented in this exhibition from different angles\, including the aspects of ritual\, manual processing\, and the rapid industrialization that took place during the Meiji era. \n* Complimentary sake will be served! \n\nAbout the Burns Collection\nThe Burns Collection was established in 1975 by Stanley B. Burns\, MD\, FACS\, a New York City ophthalmologist and photo-historian. The Collection focuses on unique images not available elsewhere\, and has been generally recognized as the most important private comprehensive collection of early photography. The Burns Archive\, with over a million historic photographs\, is best known for images of the darker side of life – death\, disease\, crime\, racism\, revolution and war – however\, a large part of the collection depicts aspects of social and cultural life. \nA favorite and compelling part of the Collection are nineteenth-century Japanese hand-painted photographs. Working together\, Dr. Burns and his daughter Elizabeth\, wrote Geisha: A Photographic History 1872-1912. It explores the life and culture of Geisha during the Meiji Era with a comprehensive history of photography in Japan. They have also produced several exhibitions. But underneath the sailor suits and “schoolyard battles” lies another\, more subtle reading. Borrowing elements from classical “monster stories” like Shuten Doji and the Uji no Hashihime\, Kill la Kill presents an interesting critique of both Meiji Japan and nationalism in history. DESCRIPTION:What is kamishibai (paper theater)?\nKamishibai comes out of a long tradition of etoki ( picture-narration) in Japan. It began as a street performance art and is a precursor of anime and manga. Kamishibai is still a popular form of entertainment in Japan today. \nAbout the performance\nIn this performance and workshop\, Tara will tell kamishibai folktales relating to oni (demons) and other shape-shifters in Japanese folklore. She will also introduce participants to the history of kamishibai and teach them how to make an early form of kamishibai\, called tachi-e (standing pictures)\, which are based on visual techniques from magic-lantern shows. DESCRIPTION:Shuten-doji is a mythical oni leader or like an evil yokai in Japan. It has various birth legends. \n“Shuten-doji\, according to one legend\, was born at Ganbara\, Echigo. However\, there is also the idea that from the base of Mt. Ibuki\, where in literature like the Nihon Shoki\, in the legend of the defeat of the giant snake Yamata no Orochi to Susanoo in a battle\, it fled from Izumo to Ōmi\, had a child with a wealthy person’s daughter\, with that child was Shuten-doji. Both father and son had a matchless thirst for sake\, which is often cited as support.(by wikipedia)” \nIn this performance\, Shuten-doji might  be able to be like a score  for performers to create their own images. DESCRIPTION:This is the first time we play together in one group. All of us are young talented musicians in twenties. We are going to play the original compositions of Kazuki Yamanaka\, who is the leader of the band\, as well as several jazz standard tunes and a Japanese folk song arranged by Kazuki. His compositions combine successfully beautiful melody rooted in Japanese sense and interesting contemporary jazz harmony. In this time\, he first try to arrange and play a famous Japanese folk song in jazz style. \nKazuki Yamanaka (Alto Saxophone) \n \nKazuki Yamanaka is a saxophonist and composer born in Saitama\, Japan. He came to New York in 2012 after he had been a professional musician in Japan for 2 years. Currently he is joining the master of music program at SUNY Purchase College and studying jazz with great masters\, such as Jon Faddis\, John Abercrombie\, Steve Wilson and Jon Gordon. He is also studying the saxophone under Jim Snidero and Steve Slagle.   \nTed Morcaldi (Guitar) \nTed Morcaldi is a guitarist and composer from the New Haven area.  Currently\, Ted performs and records with the R&B group Mad Satta as well as frequent performances with the Hawkins Jazz Collective. He has been fortunate enough to study intensively under the direction of Christopher Morrison and Joe Diorio. \nNoah Barker (Keyboard) \nNoah Barker is currently working on a masters degree at SUNY Purchase College. Noah started piano at age 7 studying classical music and started studying jazz at 15\, pursuing it at the University of Louisville. In school at UofL\, Noah Barker found a serious interest for pop and experimental music and made it a part of his study. Barker has spent time studying under Kenny Werner\, Hal Galer\, Kevin Hays\, and John LaBarbera. In addition to studying music\, Noah spends his time writing music. \nDean Torrey (Bass)  \nDean Torrey is a 20-year old double bassist & composer from Southbury\, Connecticut. He is about to enter his final year at SUNY Purchase\, where he has the privilege of studying under Pete Malinverni\, Scott Colley\, Doug Weiss\, Steve Wilson\, Calvin Weirsma\, and others.  \nMike Camacho (Drums) \nMichael Camacho is a 20 year old drummer hailing from Norwalk\, CT. Taking an interest in the drums at the age of 10 he began lesson with local teacher John Cutrone. In 2010 Mike was selected to the CT Western Regional Band and All-State bands. Since then he has gone on to the Manhattan School of Music Pre-college division where he performed with the top ensemble and won first place in the national Charles Mingus high school jazz competition. Michael now attends SUNY Purchase where he studies with renown drummer and historian Kenny Washington. Michael has been fortunate enough to perform with older musican such as Don Hahn\, Bennie Wallace\, Peter Bernstein\, David Dejesus and Peter Malinverni to name a few.

Jodo is a Japanese martial art that involves a short staff called a jo\, Jodo developed as a way to keep unruly samurai at bay. Because of its non-lethal\, controlling nature\, this policing art is still practiced by Japanese police officers. Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo is practiced at the Capital Area Jodokai. Shindo Muso Ryu jodo began as a dueling art just at the beginning of the Tokugawa era\, but it has survived for over 400 years because it is a superb self-defense and policing art. \nDan Pearson instructs Shindo Muso Ryu jodo at the Capital Area Jodokai in Washington\, D.C. He has a teaching license (menkyo) in the art from Kaminoda Tsunemori\, who is a master instructor with over 60 years of practice. Dan has almost 20 years of work under Sensei’s direction. \nRichard Strausbaugh is an assistant instructor in Shindo Muso Ryu jodo at the Capital Area Jodokai. Long Island City is the home and destination for many talented artists who have taken the time to create reminiscent visuals that express perspectives of the time spent in Long Island City. During this exhibition you will view chosen collections of life stories\, random scenes\, as well as the community and experiences through the eyes of various artists. \nExplore L.I.C. Life\, Time & History is a collaboration of artists influenced by the neighborhood\, various artworks representing L.I.C. life: photographer Rafael Gonzalez\, artist and teacher Gabino A. Castelan\, LaGuardia College students\, with the help of LIC  partnership. Starting August 9 till August 30 different artists with different stories will share their experience\, impressions\, life in the neighborhood. \nExhibition includes exclusive works of Pierre Pullis\, 1929 and Eugene de Salignac\, 1921 with historical last century view on Nothern Boulevard and Vernon Boulevard. Eugene de Salignac documented the creation of the city’s modern infrastructure—including bridges\, major municipal buildings\, roads and subways. Most notably\, he documented the construction of the Manhattan Bridge and the Queensboro Bridge\, and the Manhattan Municipal building but his most famous image is that of painters posing nonchalantly on the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge. In his lifetime de Salignac’s work was little seen outside of New York City government\, and his name was forgotten after his death in 1943. We have topped 2600 audience in total. \n  \n \n________________________________________________________________ \nStory\nA would-be playwright has given his dream a time limit to either succeed by 30 or if not to give up his dream. However so far almost turning 30 he is not seeing positive results. On his 29thbirthday he fail the New Playwright Award which the results get announced every year on his birthday. \nOne year left until the age of 30. The man decides to give  in all his energy to take his last chance to write a new play\, the one play to continue his career as a playwright. Directed by Teruo Ishii\, the film is considered a precursor to Toei’s ventures into the “Pinky violent” style in the early 1970s.[1] \nBUTOH Founder TATSUMI HIJIKATA stars in the movie\, a rare opportunity to see Tatsumi Hijikata act and dance BUTOH. \n< Not suitable for children and under 18.> \nTom Mes of midnighteye.com calls Horrors of Malformed Men “one of the most singular cinematic experiences not just Ishiiin’s history\, but in all of Japan’s. Combining a spectrum of influences that stretches from Rampo to butoh\, it taps into the country’s post-nuclear trauma so audaciously that people fled theaters in disgust upon its release and that it has been consistently barred from appearing on video or DVD since. DESCRIPTION:Plot Summary: Sixteen years have passed since a mysterious alien ship crashed on Earth. Graviton City\, once leveled by the ship’s crash\, is now a bustling metropolis. Within the city’s high school\, superhuman high school student A-Ko Magami dukes it out with the diabolical genius B-Ko Daitokuji\, who will stop at nothing to win the friendship of A-Ko’s buddy C-Ko Kotobuki. Meanwhile\, in outer space\, another alien ship is on course towards Earth to find its planet’s lost princess. \n–       Anime News Network \n  \nOne of my all-time favorite anime movies\, Project A-ko was one of the first of the 1980’s epic anime films to come to America and make an impact. Along with Akira\, Project A-ko was just one of those films that struck a chord with American fans who were really lusting for something new and unique. Full of parody\, action\, comedy\, beautiful animation\, and a plot line all its own\, Project A-ko gained a cult following almost immediately. The film spawned American comic book adaptations though Antarctic Press (an American made manga style called “Amerimanga” in those times)\, merchandising like CD-ROM screen-savers\, and RPG books\, and other merchandise. For many years after Central Park Media’s first release of Project A-ko on VHS\, it was the one of the most celebrated and talked about anime films in the anime loving community here in the U.S. \nProject A-ko had three sequels\, and a couple of OVA’s that take place in an alternate universe. Although a still enduring classic here in the U.S.\, Project A-ko seems to have fallen into obscurity in its home country of Japan. All for the best if you ask me. In a time where producers are looking to remake all that was great back in the 1980’s (Transformers\, GI Joe\, even a planned live action Akira movie)\, maybe obscurity will help A-ko remain just a classic\, beautiful\, and a fun nostalgic memory.For our showing of Project A-ko\, we will be watching it in it’s original language with subtitles.
