SUMMARY:Making Sumi-e Greeting Cards – An Art Exchange with Japan
DESCRIPTION:We are making Sumi-e Greeting Cards to send to Japan for a friendly Art Exchange!! \nThe greeting cards will be sent to Momiji-Gakusha in Japan\, which has a special program creating jobs for disabled people. The cards will be exhibited in their art gallery.\nProfessional Sumi-e artist\, Kofu (香風) Ayakoh Furukawa will teach us how to make Sumi-e Greeting Cards. “Sumi-e” means Japanese ink-painting. All materials for making the cards will be included. \nIf you are interested in the Japanese traditional art of  Sumi-e\, and cultural exchange through art\, please join us for this wonderful event at Resobox\, a Japanese art gallery. \nAbout Sumie art\nSumi-e\, also called Suiboku-ga\, is the art of ink wash painting. Essentially\, it is an ancient East Asian art that has been practiced there for well over a thousand years. Sumi-e shows the spirit\, or essence of an object or scene rather than its outward appearance — and does so by using the fewest possible strokes. Because of this simplicity\, the painter’s character and personality shine through in the painting. For both viewing and creating\, Sumi-e is a very contemplative form of painting.

SUMMARY:Japanese Movie Night 3 – House
DESCRIPTION:This time\, Resobox invites The Astoria Movie Club that specializes in presenting off-beat and unusual cinematic fare. \nNobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 “psychedelic nightmare” Hausu\, orHouse\, is one of those films you simply have to see to believe. The plot barely matters in this trippy\, (often unintentionally) funny\, and downright bizarre “horror” flick (it’s not a traditional horror flick\, if there is such a thing\, but seems to be classified as one). \nSynopsis \nWhen Oshare learns that her father’s unpleasant girlfriend is joining them on their summer holiday\, she and her friends decide to go to her invalid aunt’s remote farmhouse instead. (Not a good idea\, it turns out… )\nUnaware that evil spirits (or something) have taken over the house\, Oshare and the girls (who have chosen nicknames based on the brand names of popular consumer products!) arrive for a visit — only to face a slew of preposterously freaky events. As the girls begin vanishing one by one\, the survivors encounter ravenous furniture\, homicidal firewood\, a possessed piano\, and other absurd and violent entities. \nColour\, 88 mins.\n(Released in Japan in 1977\, it didn’t play here in the states till 2010.) \nWikipedia: English / Japanese

SUMMARY:Life Changing Sacred Himalayan Teachings
\nFundamentally\, for any of the events that feels conflicting in life\, there exists only a neutral standpoint where there is neither good nor bad. In spite of this\, it is your mind which signifies that it is “a problem.”\nTherefore\, unless you transcend your mind\, make a shift towards a viewpoint of a higher dimension and go into a deeper state of calmness\, you won’t be able to solve any of your problems\, nor will you be able to attain tranquility or happiness.\n“Transcending your mind” is precisely nothing but “Emptying your mind.” I have discovered the way to achieve this state in “The Sacred Himalayan teachings.” By mastering this teaching through rigorous ascetic training\, I am now here to share with all of you\, the essence of how to empty your mind. \nFirst Female Himalayan Siddha Master to teach Empowering Meditations in the West

SUMMARY:Japanese Movie Night 2 - An Actor’s Revenge
DESCRIPTION:One of director Kon Ichikawa’s best known films\, An Actor’s Revenge\, is set in the heart of 19th century Edo. Starring Kazuo Hasegawa\, re-creating his role from the 1935 black and white version\, no attempt has been made to disguise the fact that the leading man has aged and is now 55. \nThe story is about the Kabuki actor Yukinojo\, an onnagata who plays female roles in the all-male world of kabuki\, on tour to the capital as part of a visiting troupe from Osaka. From the stage\, he suddenly recognizes the magistrate\, Sansai Dobe\, who indirectly caused the death of his parents many years before. Setting in motion a plan to take revenge\, Yukinojo uses all the skills of guile and persuasion available to an actor\, not only against the magistrate himself\, but also against his two merchant associates Kawaguchiya and Hiromiya. Yukinojo’s plan is enhanced when Dobe’s daughter\, Namiji\, who becomes an innocent victim in his revenge\, falls in love with him after seeing him on stage.is now 55. \nAlthough the film has been described as “pure camp\,” it’s beauty is undeniable as director Ichikawa handles the medium in a very painterly way. The dance scenes from the Kabuki classic\, Sagimusume (Heron Maiden)\, are stunning. Notable in the role of narrator\, is Tokugawa Musei\, formerly one of the most influential film narrators (benshi) of the silent film period. \nJapanese classical dancer\, Helen Moss who has given workshops and lecture /demonstrations to introduce people of all ages to the beauty of dance and Japanese culture throughout the New York area\, will introduce the film\, and give a brief commentary afterward.

SUMMARY:Community Art Project - ENSO (円相)
DESCRIPTION:Community Art Project – ENSO (円相)\nEnso is a Japanese word meaning circle\, with a concept associated with Zen. It is a symbol of wholeness and cyclic return\, leading to enlightenment\, the universe and the void. This circle can also sometimes be described as a mirror of its painters – reflecting who you are and what you think or feel now\, as you paint it. \nThe minimum expression of this artwork gives you a good opportunity to look back at yourself\, and even to find your true self. Be honestly who you are\, and draw your own circle. \nIn order to Join this project\, \n1. Visit RESOBOX Gallery\n2. Draw your own circle with ink-painting while waiting for your drink.\n3. We take your photo with your artwork and upload here.\n4. Check your photo and share it with your friends to get their comments\n5. All artworks will be exhibited at Resobox on July\, 2012 – Party!!! \nAll materials are provided from us. Just come and draw. Anyone is welcome. \n ENSO Performance (June 3\, 2012) \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nENSO Finale: Exploring Zen – Lecture and Multimedia Performance  (November 10\, 2012) \nTo see the event details: https://resobox.com/ensofinal/

SUMMARY:Music in the Wood - Shadow Puppet Show
DESCRIPTION:Camphor Tree shadow theatre presents \n“MUSIC IN THE WOOD” \nA shadow puppet show with actors and live music \ncreated by Watoku Ueno \n\n\nThe original story\, “Musical Tree”\, was written by luige Dal Cin\, an Italian environmentalist/fairytale writer….. Long long ago there was a hill where fairies lived. They played enchanted music with animals and other living things. After the fairies were gone\, the tree grew and sang fairy’s music when the wind blew. Time passed and the tree was surrounded by city buildings. The people found pout about the tree’s music and gathered around it to enjoy the music. But this didn’t continue for so long. The people’s selfish idea lead to tragic ending.…… \nWatoku Ueno created and directed a shadow puppets theatre based on the story with live music and performer. Watoku has been working as a theatre artist since he arrived in NYC in 1981.

SUMMARY:Okinawan Lecture / Performance to Cuny Students
