SUMMARY:Iei: A Portrait of the Life You Are Living
DESCRIPTION:November 5 & 6 · Reserve your time between 11:00 am and 6:50 pm \nIn Japan\, more and more people are choosing their own funeral portrait while they are still alive. \nAn iei is the portrait placed at a Japanese funeral\, the image by which a person is remembered. Traditionally chosen in a hurry by family\, it is increasingly something people choose themselves: a portrait that shows who they are\, taken on their own terms. It is less about preparing for death than about honoring the person you are today. \nThis is a portrait session built around you. New York photographer Tokio Kuniyoshi and hair and makeup artist Michael work together to bring out your own features\, style\, and character. The result is a portrait that celebrates who you are today\, and one the people you love will always have. \nChoose your session (two-day festival admission included): \n\nHair & makeup + portrait\, $180: a 30-minute session that begins with hair and makeup (20 minutes)\, followed by your portrait session (10 minutes). Styling is a light\, natural touch-up\, so please arrive with a clean\, simple base.\nPortrait only\, $50: your portrait session without hair or makeup (about 10 minutes).\n\nYour photos are retouched and delivered to you as digital files on the spot. \nAlready have an admission ticket? Choose “I already have an admission ticket” when booking: $150 with hair & makeup\, or $20 for the portrait only. Please bring your admission ticket on the day. \nStart times are every 20 minutes\, 11:00 am to 1:20 pm and 2:40 pm to 6:20 pm\, on both November 5 and November 6. Your start time is your check-in time. SUMMARY:Bin Kuroshima: Hand-Painted Kyo-Yuzen at Carl Hansen & Søn
DESCRIPTION:Kyoto dye artist Bin Kuroshima at the Midtown Manhattan flagship of Carl Hansen & Søn. \nFor more than four decades\, Bin Kuroshima has painted with dye. Hand-Painted Kyo-Yuzen brings his screens\, tapestries\, scrolls and panels\, colored largely with botanical dyes and sumi ink\, into the showroom of the Danish furniture maker: an encounter between two traditions built on natural materials\, the hand\, and time. \nIt is Kuroshima’s first exhibition with Carl Hansen & Søn\, and he will be in New York for the opening reception on Tuesday\, November 10. \n\n\nExhibitionNovember 6\, 2026 – January 8\, 2027 \nOpening receptionTuesday\, November 10\, 2026\, 6:00–8:00 pmThe artist will be present. \nAdmissionFree \nVenueCarl Hansen & Søn Flagship Store\, Midtown East145 East 57th Street\, New York\, NY 10022 \nShowroom hoursMonday–Friday 10 am–6 pm · Saturday 11 am–5 pm · Closed SundayHoliday hours may vary. He is a nationally certified Traditional Craftsman\, and in 2007 Kyoto Prefecture named him a Kyo no Meiko\, a Master Craftsman of Kyoto. In 2014 he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure\, Silver Rays\, one of Japan’s state decorations. \nKyo-yuzen is a divided craft in which almost every stage belongs to a different specialist. Kuroshima is a rare integrator: he understands every stage and directs the specialists who work with him\, keeping authorship from the first line to the finished piece. In his sugaki-yuzen\, also called lineless yuzen\, the dye is brushed straight onto the cloth\, without the fine paste lines that normally keep each color apart. \nHe paints on silk\, cotton\, hemp and paper\, working largely in botanical dyes\, whose colors go on deepening for decades\, and in sumi ink. Each piece is then finished by tailoring or mounting. His work adorns the lobby of Kyoto Omuro Kadensho\, and at the request of former Kyoto Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa he created garments worn by the mayors of Kyoto’s sister cities at official receptions\, among them a furisode for the Mayor of Paris. \nAt ICFF 2026 in New York\, the mural he painted live at the fair received the NKBA | KBIS Inspire Award for Best Wall Treatment. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP \n\nJoin us for the opening reception on Tuesday\, November 10\, 6:00–8:00 pm\, with Bin Kuroshima.
