SUMMARY:Sweets for Every Season: Nerikiri Wagashi Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The April 5th workshop will be taught by Yuki Sakura\, who we’re delighted to welcome to RESOBOX! \nWagashi\, or Japanese confections\, boast a rich history spanning hundreds of years. Among the most exquisite are nerikiri\, hand-sculpted sweets in various flavors and styles\, reflecting nature’s beauty and often modeled on seasonal scenes. These edible works of art are famous worldwide and accessible to everyone\, not just masters. \nOur classes teach traditional techniques for creating these beautiful confections\, from shaping the dough to adding intricate details. Guided by our instructors\, you’ll gain a deep appreciation for this ancient art form. \n\nIn this session\, you will create three different cherry blossom (桜) designs—an iconic symbol of spring in Japan. Through shaping petals\, layering colors\, and capturing the softness of the season\, you will bring springtime to life with your own hands.\nYou will learn the characteristics of Nerikiri\, its ingredients\, and traditional techniques while crafting your own original designs. This workshop offers more than the joy of tasting Wagashi; it gives you the experience of creating edible art\, engaging your senses of sight\, touch\, and taste. Simple hand movements— pressing\, pinching\, layering — become acts of sculpture and painting\, turning the creative process itself into an artistic experience. Through this hands-on practice\, you will discover the unique beauty of Japanese food culture.\nAt the end of the class\, you’ll take home the Nerikiri you lovingly crafted yourself. We hope you’ll share them with your family and friends—revisiting the stories and moments from the workshop as you admire and enjoy the sweets you created with your own hands.\n\n  \nWhat Makes Us Different? \nHands-on experience: All the ingredients and materials are prepared\, and containers for taking them home are provided. You only need to walk into the classroom and leave with four beautiful wagashi. \nPersonal attention: We believe in providing personalized attention to each of our students\, with our instructors offering individualized guidance and support. \nCommunity atmosphere: Cooking is always more fun with friends! Our classes offer a warm and welcoming environment where you can connect with other sweet-making enthusiasts and share your love for Nerikiri. \n \n

SUMMARY:Sumi-E Japanese Ink Painting Class
DESCRIPTION:  \n“If we study Japanese art\, we see a man who is undoubtedly wise\, philosophic and intelligent\, who spends his time doing what? …\nHe studies a single blade of grass.” \n-Vincent van Gogh \nSumi-e\, also called Suibokuga\, is the art of ink wash-painting. Characteristically\, it is an East Asian art\, and has been practiced there for well over a thousand years. Sumi-e depicts the spirit or essence of an object or scene rather than its outward appearance — and does so in the fewest possible strokes. Because of this simplicity\, the painter’s character and personality come through in his/her work. In both viewing and creating\, Sumi-e is a very contemplative form of painting. \nIn this class at RESOBOX\, a Japanese cultural center in New York\, all students will start from the basics of ink-wash painting\, such as how to hold a brush. All materials such as ink\, brushes\, calligraphy paper\, etc. will be provided for the students. \nUpcoming In-person Class Schedule\nCherry Blossoms (Sakura)\nWednesday\, April 1st\, 6:00–7:00 PM or 7:30–8:30 PM\nWednesday\, April 22nd\, 6:00–7:00 PM or 7:30–8:30 PM\nSaturday\, May 16th\, 1:30 – 2:30 PM\nWednesday\, May 20th\, 6:00–7:00 PM or 7:30–8:30 PM \nGoldfish (Kingyo)\nWednesday\, June 10th\, 6:00–7:00 PM or 7:30–8:30 PM\nSaturday\, June 20th\, 1:30 – 2:30 PM \n＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊ \nVirtual Interactive Japanese Ink Painting Class\nIf you are looking for a therapeutic time for yourself\, or fun activities at home\, please join our virtual ink painting Sumi-e class! \nParticipants are responsible for providing their own supplies below needed for the class. SUMMARY:Suminagashi: An Art of Irreplaceable Moments
DESCRIPTION:Discover the timeless beauty of Suminagashi(墨流し)\, the ancient Japanese art of marbling. Originating in Japan more than 800 years ago\, Suminagashi literally means “floating ink.” This elegant technique was first enjoyed in the Heian period (794–1185) as a courtly pastime\, where artists and nobles would marvel at the delicate\, ever-changing patterns created on water. \nIn this class\, you will learn how to gently drop ink onto the surface of water and guide the ripples with your breath\, brushes\, or even the subtlest movements of air. The resulting designs are then transferred onto washi paper and even onto fabric items such as handkerchiefs\, creating one-of-a-kind works of art. \nBecause the process is simple\, the class is fun for a variety of ages and skill levels. Each print captures a fleeting moment\, never to be repeated\, embodying the Japanese aesthetic of impermanence and beauty in transience. Children aged 8 and above are also welcome to participate. \nWhether you are interested in traditional arts\, meditation through creative practice\, or simply wish to explore a new form of expression\, this class offers a unique opportunity to connect with history while creating your own modern interpretations of this ancient craft.

SUMMARY:Virtual Ikebana class - Misho Style
DESCRIPTION:Classes will be held via the Zoom Video Conferencing application\, a private Zoom link will be sent to participants before the class begins. The classes will be held in Eastern Time. \n  \nA few things you will need before the class: \n1. You will need to find your own flowers. We are sorry that we are unable to deliver flowers to your home (try calling around; some local shops will deliver). But any flowers are OK! Just make sure to get 2-3 varieties\, and choose what you like. We don’t need a lot. \n2. You will need clippers or scissors that you don’t mind using to cut flower stems. \n3. A vase. If you don’t have a vase\, you can use a glass\, a coffee cup\, a cereal bowl\, or your choice of container\, as long as it has a little depth. You might even surprise yourself with how nice a non-traditional vase can look with a cute arrangement of flowers. \n*If you have your own Kenzan\, Flower Pin\, or Pin Frog\, you can use it. And if you want to buy one\, you can order on Amazon online. \nIn this class\, we will check each student’s tools and flowers\, then help you with tips on how to build up and create your own Ikebana arrangement. \n  \nPLEASE NOTE: The class sign up deadline is 72 hours before the class begins. Cancellation after this period will NOT be refunded. \n\n\n$30 / person \nAll materials included \n\nReserve Your Spot \n\n  \n\nLearn more about Virtual Ikebana class at RESOBOX \nView class page →
