DESCRIPTION:Classes will be held via the Zoom Video Conferencing application\, a private Zoom link will be sent to participants before the class begins. The classes will be held in Eastern Time. \n  \nA few things you will need before the class: \n1. You will need to find your own flowers. We are sorry that we are unable to deliver flowers to your home (try calling around; some local shops will deliver). But any flowers are OK! Just make sure to get 2-3 varieties\, and choose what you like. We don’t need a lot. \n2. You will need clippers or scissors that you don’t mind using to cut flower stems. \n3. A vase. If you don’t have a vase\, you can use a glass\, a coffee cup\, a cereal bowl\, or your choice of container\, as long as it has a little depth. You might even surprise yourself with how nice a non-traditional vase can look with a cute arrangement of flowers. \n*If you have your own Kenzan\, Flower Pin\, or Pin Frog\, you can use it. Anyone who has seen a shūgi-bukuro\, the traditional envelope used for monetary gifts\, will recognise its distinctive forms. \nMade from washi\, mizuhiki is a remarkably versatile material: a simple paper cord that can be tied\, shaped and transformed into intricate forms. In September you will explore that quality through the form of the gourd. Harvested from summer into autumn\, the gourd is deeply rooted in Japanese tradition\, where its distinctive silhouette has long been associated with good fortune\, appearing in kimono designs\, traditional crafts and seasonal decorations. Using gold and silver mizuhiki\, you will create this graceful form by adapting the awaji knot\, one of the fundamental knots of mizuhiki. Your finished design is set against Japanese paper and framed as a small work of art to take home. \nAlthough the finished piece may look intricate\, the basic technique is approachable even for those completely new to mizuhiki. In September\, the cosmos sways lightly in the breeze\, the bellflower adds quiet elegance with its deep-violet\, star-shaped petals\, and the tamagiku begins to reveal its round\, layered fullness as the early autumn season gently unfolds. \nThis workshop offers more than the joy of tasting Wagashi — it gives you the experience of creating edible art with your own hands. Simple hand movements such as pressing\, pinching\, and layering transform into moments of artistic expression. Through this hands-on experience\, you will discover the unique beauty of Japanese food culture. \nAt the end of the class\, you’ll take home the nerikiri sweets you lovingly crafted yourself.
