SUMMARY:ORINIGIRI Workshop 15: Making Japanese-Inspired Holiday Gifts using Onigiri!
DESCRIPTION:A strong emphasis is put on wrapping and presenting gifts in Japanese culture. We are accustomed to having things presented in a beautiful manner. In this workshop\, we will be using onigiri (rice ball) decorated with miniature paper Christmas trees that make beautiful and original Japanese-inspired Christmas gifts. Participants will be taught to fold and wrap their onigiri gifts in elegant Japanese paper as perfect presents for all of their loved ones. Two different types of onigiri will be made\, one to enjoy yourself and one that will be used as a Christmas gift. Creating this “ORINIGIRI” gift is simple\, all you need to do is think of a special person you want to give the gift to and you’ll easily be able to create an original Christmas gift! These Kazari Maki-Zushi (sushi with special designs and decorations) are not only delicious to eat\, but also cute and fun to make! We’ll be creating two kinds of holiday sushi for this class with natural ingredients (as listed below) that taste great\, just like regular sushi! By manipulating the natural colors of each ingredient\, you can design an interesting and delicious sushi piece. The cute designs on these holiday sushi can be made easily\, so no sushi-making experience is required and it’s a good way to impress your friends at upcoming holiday parties. \n\nIngredients\nSanta Sushi \n\nSushi rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\n\nSeaweed\n\n\nSeaweed powder\n\n\nBeets\n\n\nCarrots\n\n\nSeafood sausage\n\n\nCheese sticks\n\n\nMountain gobo (burdock root)\n\nNori\n\nSnowman Sushi \n\nSushi rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nBeets\nBaked Egg\nNori\nKanikama (crab sticks)\n\n \nWhat is Kazari Maki-Zushi?\nKazari Maki-Zushi is a patterned or decorative sushi that is derived from the several sushi techniques such as Saiku sushi and Futomaki sushi. It is undoubtedly sushi\, but the appearance and design of each roll are filled with endless possibilities! A Kazari Maki-Zushi’s design can be anything – flowers\, fruit\, animals\, words and even logos! Whatever your creativeness allows\, Kazari Maki-Zushi can be almost anything. Using various natural colors of ingredients you see every day\, Kazari Maki-Zushi is a fun way to play around with sushi designs. This food/art form has been developed for over 150 years\, and still\, new ideas are created everyday in Japan. And it’s even a great way to show off your artistic skills at parties or potlucks! \nAlthough it looks difficult\, this decorative sushi is very simple and easy to make! No prior experience is necessary as it involves a different process than creating regular sushi. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is much like building with Legos\, where each piece is stacked to make a picture!  \nKazari Maki-Sushi represents an important unique aspect in Japanese food –  not only in taste\, but also in the beautiful visual appearance that serves to please those who enjoy it. We will also make Japanese-style veggie broth using dried kelp and shiitake mushroom to make gut-friendly miso soup. \nAs always\, we will cook with hand-picked fresh organic produce and seasonings. DESCRIPTION:Have you heard of miniature food? “Miniature food” refers to any items using the motif of really small versions of foods. It’s a hot topic on TV and magazines. \nMiniature food is easy to enjoy\, so people of all ages\, from small children to grownups\, can have fun with it. \nOver two days of lessons\, you will create a 3cm bowl of ramen\, starting with the bowl. \nFashion roasted pork fillet\, naruto (kamaboko/fish cake  with spiral pattern)\, onions\, noodles\, soup and bowl\, to make your own original miniature ramen dish. \nFashion the soup after your own preference\, adding soy sauce\, pork bones\, miso and other elements. \nThese lessons are highly popular in Japan. \nLessons are taught by Mika Furuya\, our first certification instructor in New York. \nAlso participating will be Reina Nozu\, founder and director of the Miniature Food Association of Japan\, specially arriving from Japan. \n**Please note that this is a two-part workshop. Since our previous four World Amigurumi Exhibition (2014 | 2015 | 2016| 2017) have been so successful\, we’re bringing it back and calling all talented crochet artists to apply for the upcoming show! \nOur goal is to completely fill our gallery space with at least 3\,000 amigurumi. We want to turn the gallery into an “amigurumi room\,” filled to the brim with cuddly and cute! This is a unique exhibition in that it’s not displaying an individual artist\, but a concept. The concept\, amigurumi\, is a culture that began in Japan\, but is now cherished by crocheters all over the world. We were so inspired by the amount of amigurumi artists out there that we decided to embark on a journey to create an exhibition showcasing the united\, global love of this cute craft! To make this a successful exhibit\, we need amigurumi contributions from crocheters everywhere! \nGo on a video tour of a previous year’s World Amigurumi Exhibition! \n\n\n\n\nExhibition Theme Description – Endangered Species (Animals/Plants/Insects/etc.) –\nIn the previous years\, we’ve asked artists to create amigurumi that represented their region\, amigurumi that were made of unconventional items\, and amigurumi that were made to be used in daily life; we were excited to receive all different kinds of creations. This year\, we’ve decided to take it a even step further and ask artists to create amigurumi based on endangered species. \nThere are various types of species and tons of animals that are on the move to becoming extinct. In order to both spread awareness and gather support\, we are proud to announce or theme for this year: endangered animals/species! \nWe have decided to use the Red List of Threatened Species published the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources)\, which lists species of animals/plants/insects/etc. that are most on the verge of extinction. Through the exhibition\, we\, as RESOBOX\, would like to advocate the importance to protect the many species on the list together with the many amigurumi artists around the world. \nWhat is an Endangered Species?\nAn endangered species is a type of organism that is threatened by extinction. Species become endangered for two main reasons: loss of habitat and loss of genetic variation. \n– The National Geographic \n\n\nWhat is The IUCN Red List?\n\nEstablished in 1964\, The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of animal\, fungi and plant species. \nThe IUCN Red List is a critical indicator of the health of the world’s biodiversity. Far more than a list of species and their status\, it is a powerful tool to inform and catalyze action for biodiversity conservation and policy change\, critical to protecting the natural resources we need to survive. It provides information about range\, population size\, habitat and ecology\, use and/or trade\, threats\, and conservation actions that will help inform necessary conservation decisions. Learn more about The IUCN Red List \n– The IUCN \n\n\n\nTo apply for the exhibition\, we would like each participating artist to submit an idea of what endangered species amigurumi they can/will create. \nMuch like previous year’s exhibition\, at least one piece should match our theme: an endangered species/animal listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Pieces can range from plants\, animals\, insects\, etc. but MUST be categorized as one of the following: CR (Critically Endangered)\, EN (Endangered)\, or VU (Vulnerable) as specified in the list. Artists MUST choose a species that exists in the region where the artists resides. If the same species is chosen by more than one artist\, there is a possibility for us to request that they change their species. \nAny other pieces submitted to the exhibition can be “free styled\,” so artists have the option of sending us any kind of piece they want to show off in New York. \nHow to use the IUCN Website and filter for acceptable species:\n\nVisit link: https://www.iucnredlist.org/search\nFilter by “Red List Category” on the left hand side of the page\nSelect CR (Critically Endangered)\, EN (Endangered)\, and VU (Vulnerable) categories.\nFilter by “Land Region” and “Marine Region” according to your location. Our staff will take care of your amigurumi (sales\, display\, shipping\, etc.)\nArtists must submit a minimum of 10 amigurumi pieces.\nAll pieces from the various contributing amigurumi artists will be for sale during the exhibition term.\nArtist retains ownership of all work consigned to or represented by RESOBOX Gallery.\nEach work should have a small loop (fishing line\, thread\, yarn\, etc. is fine) and tag. Each artist must submit at least one amigurumi item that is based off a current endangered species listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. \n**We WILL NOT accept any amigurumi based on licensed characters. If your pieces are based on licensed characters\, we will not display it during the exhibit and we will send them back to you immediately. \n– I didn’t create the patterns for my pieces. Is that okay?\nPlease check the original creator’s website. Normally\, there are some comments explaining if you can sell the pieces based on their patterns. We will only accept works that are originals or have permission from the original creator. Please note again that amigurumi based on licensed characters WILL NOT be accepted and will be sent back to you. \n– If my amigurumi arrive at RESOBOX after the November 30th deadline because of a post delay\, is that okay?\nIf your pieces arrive after November 30th for any reason\, we cannot guarantee they will be on display for the opening party (December 8th). Once we confirm the payment received to our account from you\, we will ship your unsold items back to you. \n– May I send the same character with a different color scheme? Do the pieces submitted all have to be different\, or can they be duplicates of the same piece?\nDuplicates are okay whether they are the exact same or different colors/styles. \n– Is it possible to send business cards to go with the amigurumi to gain exposure?\nIf you would like to send business cards\, please attach them to your amigurumi. See the tag instructions above. \n– How will you establish the retail prices?\nEach artist will decide the price for each of their pieces. After we receive your price list and amigurumi contributions\, we will contact you if we believe a price is inappropriate. (If you don’t hear from us\, please assume that your prices are okay.) \n– Will there be any kind of opening reception?\nYes. We will have an opening party (December 8\, 2019). If you can make it to New York\, please join us! \n– Do you need a detailed list of all of the amigurumis I’m sending? And if so\, what information should be on this list?\nYes\, once you are accepted to the exhibition\, we will ask each artist to send a detailed list of amigurumi by the mid of November. Please send the following information by email. The list does not need to be included in the package: \n\n\n\nName of each piece with a photo of each (or at least a description of what the piece looks like)\nPrice for each\nBaby safe or not\nAny other things that the gallery should know\n\n\n\n– Do you take full responsibility for the amigurumi stock during the exhibition?\nWe cannot provide artists with compensation for lost/stolen items. DESCRIPTION:Hakata dolls are one of the most traditional clay dolls in Japan. They are famous for their beautiful shape and brilliant colors. Hakata dolls were created during the 17th century\, produced by using unglazed clay. During the time\, they were used as offerings to Buddhist temples or gifts to the ruler of Hakata. Now\, they are seen as works of art with various artistic theories and techniques surrounding them. \nIn this workshop participants will be able to choose one of either dog ($25) or a typical girl dolls ($35) to create.  The patterns are made by the traditional craftsman\, Mr. Shoji Kajihara\, with high quality clay. Participants will be taught about the basic skills of painting dolls and how to color them to their liking. \n

By manipulating the natural colors of each ingredient\, you can design an interesting and delicious sushi piece. It is undoubtedly sushi\, but the appearance and design of each roll are filled with endless possibilities! A Kazari Maki-Zushi’s design can be anything – flowers\, fruit\, animals\, words and even logos! Whatever your creativeness allows\, Kazari Maki-Zushi can be almost anything. Using various natural colors of ingredients you see every day\, Kazari Maki-Zushi is a fun way to play around with sushi designs. This food/art form has been developed for over 150 years\, and still\, new ideas are created everyday in Japan. And it’s even a great way to show off your artistic skills at parties or potlucks! \nAlthough it looks difficult\, this decorative sushi is very simple and easy to make! No prior experience is necessary as it involves a different process than creating regular sushi. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is much like building with Legos\, where each piece is stacked to make a picture!  \nKazari Maki-Sushi represents an important unique aspect in Japanese food –  not only in taste\, but also in the beautiful visual appearance that serves to please those who enjoy it. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is also a great way to enjoy company\, whether it be friends or family and is especially popular with kids!
