SUMMARY:Calling All Crocheters For Our FIFTH Annual Amigurumi Exhibition!!
DESCRIPTION:Header image by Seeapin \nWe’re super happy to announce our FIFTH World Amigurumi Exhibition application! Since our previous four World Amigurumi Exhibition (2014 | 2015 | 2016| 2017) have been so successful\, we’re bringing it back and calling all talented crochet artists to apply for the upcoming show! \nOur goal is to completely fill our gallery space with at least 3\,000 amigurumi. We want to turn the gallery into an “amigurumi room\,” filled to the brim with cuddly and cute! This is a unique exhibition in that it’s not displaying an individual artist\, but a concept. The concept\, amigurumi\, is a culture that began in Japan\, but is now cherished by crocheters all over the world. We were so inspired by the amount of amigurumi artists out there that we decided to embark on a journey to create an exhibition showcasing the united\, global love of this cute craft! To make this a successful exhibit\, we need amigurumi contributions from crocheters everywhere! \nGo on a video tour of a previous year’s World Amigurumi Exhibition! \n\n\n\n\nExhibition Theme Description – Endangered Species (Animals/Plants/Insects/etc.) –\nIn the previous years\, we’ve asked artists to create amigurumi that represented their region\, amigurumi that were made of unconventional items\, and amigurumi that were made to be used in daily life; we were excited to receive all different kinds of creations. This year\, we’ve decided to take it a even step further and ask artists to create amigurumi based on endangered species. \nThere are various types of species and tons of animals that are on the move to becoming extinct. In order to both spread awareness and gather support\, we are proud to announce or theme for this year: endangered animals/species! \nWe have decided to use the Red List of Threatened Species published the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources)\, which lists species of animals/plants/insects/etc. that are most on the verge of extinction. Through the exhibition\, we\, as RESOBOX\, would like to advocate the importance to protect the many species on the list together with the many amigurumi artists around the world. \nWhat is an Endangered Species?\nAn endangered species is a type of organism that is threatened by extinction. Species become endangered for two main reasons: loss of habitat and loss of genetic variation. \n– The National Geographic \n\n\nWhat is The IUCN Red List?\n\nEstablished in 1964\, The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of animal\, fungi and plant species. \nThe IUCN Red List is a critical indicator of the health of the world’s biodiversity. Far more than a list of species and their status\, it is a powerful tool to inform and catalyze action for biodiversity conservation and policy change\, critical to protecting the natural resources we need to survive. It provides information about range\, population size\, habitat and ecology\, use and/or trade\, threats\, and conservation actions that will help inform necessary conservation decisions. Learn more about The IUCN Red List \n– The IUCN \n\n\n\nTo apply for the exhibition\, we would like each participating artist to submit an idea of what endangered species amigurumi they can/will create. \nMuch like previous year’s exhibition\, at least one piece should match our theme: an endangered species/animal listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Pieces can range from plants\, animals\, insects\, etc. but MUST be categorized as one of the following: CR (Critically Endangered)\, EN (Endangered)\, or VU (Vulnerable) as specified in the list. Artists MUST choose a species that exists in the region where the artists resides. If the same species is chosen by more than one artist\, there is a possibility for us to request that they change their species. \nAny other pieces submitted to the exhibition can be “free styled\,” so artists have the option of sending us any kind of piece they want to show off in New York. \nHow to use the IUCN Website and filter for acceptable species:\n\nVisit link: https://www.iucnredlist.org/search\nFilter by “Red List Category” on the left hand side of the page\nSelect CR (Critically Endangered)\, EN (Endangered)\, and VU (Vulnerable) categories.\nFilter by “Land Region” and “Marine Region” according to your location. If you live in North America\, it should look like the below:\n\n\nChoose a species to create and click on their name to see more information! \nTheme Example\nKiwi by Seeapin\nBasic Exhibit Information\n\nDuration: December 9\, 2019 – March 31\, 2020\nLocation: RESOBOX\, 41-26 27th St\, Long Island City\, NY 11101 | www.resobox.com\nIt would be great if you could come to NY during the exhibition\, but you don’t have to. Our staff will take care of your amigurumi (sales\, display\, shipping\, etc.)\nArtists must submit a minimum of 10 amigurumi pieces.\nAll pieces from the various contributing amigurumi artists will be for sale during the exhibition term.\nArtist retains ownership of all work consigned to or represented by RESOBOX Gallery.\nEach work should have a small loop (fishing line\, thread\, yarn\, etc. is fine) and tag. The tag must include the following: a) artist/brand name; b) baby safe or not baby safe; c) Country (country flag image or country name) d) price; e) item number (RESOBOX will send this number to you once you are accepted)\, and; f) any other information you want to include.\n\n**NOTE: Each artist who is participating MUST submit at least one amigurumi piece that is part of the exhibit theme. So\, if you send us 50 pieces\, at least 1 out of those 50 pieces must be a themed piece and the rest of them can be free-style – whatever you want to exhibit. \nThe artist must include a small loop and a tag on each piece.\nInterested artists must fill out the following form by October 20\, 2019:\n\nApplication Form\nWe will screen each artist and their theme through this form. DESCRIPTION:Happy Halloween!! Create spooky pumpkin/jack-o-lantern and skeleton sushi to celebrate the Fall holiday! Impress your friends with what you learn about this Kazari Maki-Zushi class! These two kinds of character sushi for this class are made with natural ingredients (as listed below) that taste great\, just like regular sushi! By manipulating the natural colors of each ingredient\, you can design an interesting and delicious sushi piece. The cute designs on these Spring sushi can be made easily\, so no sushi-making experience is required and it’s a good way to impress your friends at any party! \nIngredients\nPumpkin Roll \n\nSushi Rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nCucumber\nFish paste\nSeaweed\nCarrot\n\nSkeleton Roll \n\nSushi Rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nBeets\nBlack sesame seeds\nEggs\nFish paste\nSeaweed\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this class\, we’ll be teaching participants how to make the classic California roll as well as unique sushi rolls called Kazari Maki-Zushi. Kazari Maki-Zushi is a patterned or decorative sushi that is derived from the several sushi techniques such as Saiku sushi and Futomaki sushi. It is undoubtedly sushi\, but the appearance and design of each roll are filled with endless possibilities! A Kazari Maki-Zushi’s design can be anything – flowers\, fruit\, animals\, words and even logos! Whatever your creativeness allows\, Kazari Maki-Zushi can be almost anything. Using various natural colors of ingredients you see every day\, Kazari Maki-Zushi is a fun way to play around with sushi designs. This food/art form has been developed for over 150 years\, and still\, new ideas are created everyday in Japan. And it’s even a great way to show off your artistic skills at parties or potlucks! \nAlthough it looks difficult\, this decorative sushi is very simple and easy to make! No prior experience is necessary as it involves a different process than creating regular sushi. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is much like building with Legos\, where each piece is stacked to make a picture!  \nKazari Maki-Sushi represents an important unique aspect in Japanese food –  not only in taste\, but also in the beautiful visual appearance that serves to please those who enjoy it. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is also a great way to enjoy company\, whether it be friends or family and is especially popular with kids! Even if your homemade Kazari Maki-Zushi isn’t well-prepared\, the process of making and seeing your finished pieces on the dining table creates joy for all who see (and eat!) it. \nFor more workshops in this series\, visit our Japanese Cooking Workshop and Kazari Maki-Zushi Workshop Series page.

SUMMARY:The SHOKUNIN Collection Vol. 1: The Evolution of Tradition by Tomoe Senko Co.\, Ltd (「職人」コレクション VOL.1 伝承と革新 巴染工株式会社)
DESCRIPTION:Designing products\, making products\, selling products\, buying products––products go through many stages before they begin their useful lives in your home. The SHOKUNIN collection is a showcase for craftspeople (known as shokunin in Japanese) to introduce Japanese traditional arts and crafts to New Yorkers at RESOBOX\, an innovative arts space in Long Island City. \nThe first installment of SHOKUNIN will feature the venerable Japanese textile company Tomoe Senko and opens on Monday\, November 4\, continuing until Tuesday\, November 26. Tomoe Senko\, based in Morioka\, Japan\, has been producing hand-dyed products for more than 110 years. The fifth-generation head of Tomoe Senko\, Mr. Makoto Tojo\, will be making a special appearance in New York for the event. \nTradition\nTomoe Senko will exhibit tenugui (traditional Japanese hand-dyed towels) and hikeshi hanten (traditional Japanese firefighter uniforms) that have been worn during the Morioka Hachiman Shrine Matsuri (Fall Festival)\, which has been celebrated for more than 300 years. Each group that participates in the festival has a different design for its hanten and tenugui––we will introduce you to the distinctive designs along with the history of each group. \nThe craftspeople of Tomoe Senko have passed the torch to a new generation––they are young and talented\, and also highly skilled. They may be young\, but the craftspeople know the traditional techniques and have been creating their own new methods as well. Chusen\, a traditional Japanese hand-dyeing technique\, is used for tenugui and kimono. Nassen\, another traditional hand-dyeing method\, is used for hanten\, noren (fabric door panels)\, and flags. Tomoe Senko has specialists in these two different methods\, and there are also steaming and washing craftspeople who make the products possible. All the craftspeople put their hearts into their work\, using skills they have perfected over years. We hope you will see and feel their passion through this exhibition and take some of it home with you. \nEvolution\nThe fifth-generation owner of Tomoe Senko\, Mr. Makoto Tojo\, has opened two new factories near the original factory. He has incorporated new technologies and developed new products. Because the artisans of Tomoe Senko have mastered traditional hand-dyeing techniques\, they can use those as a base for creating new ideas\, giving them unlimited possibilities. Tomoe Senko also has its own sewing team\, so from dyeing and printing to finishing the final product\, many skilled people put life into the cloth. Tomoe Senko will be bringing new products\, including printed sashiko clothing and goods\, for this special event. \nWe will have an opening reception on Thursday\, November 7\, from 7pm to 9pm. Our sponsor Sake Discoveries will provide Nanbu Bijin\, producer of award-winning Japanese sake\, as welcome drinks from Iwate throughout the evening. During the reception\, we will connect the dye house with Resobox via the Internet\, so you will have a chance to meet the shokunin who made these beautiful products and share a moment of time together. Attendees will also receive a special free gift\, the Tomoe Senko exclusive “Three Most Famous Noodles” tenugui! \nYou can take part in a hand-dyeing workshops on Saturday\, November 9\, and Sunday\, November 17. \n\nNatural Indigo Tie-Dyeing Tenugui Scarf Workshops\nDischarge-Dyed Tenugui Workshops\n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact the organizer of SHOKUNIN: \nRuri Kippenbrock\nWuhao New York\, Inc.\n212.231.8126\ninfo@wuhaonyc.com \n\nモノをデザインする人、モノを作る人、モノを売る人、そしてモノを買う人。

The cute designs on these Spring sushi can be made easily\, so no sushi-making experience is required and it’s a good way to impress your friends at any party! \nIngredients\nPumpkin Roll \n\nSushi Rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nCucumber\nFish paste\nSeaweed\nCarrot\n\nSkeleton Roll \n\nSushi Rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nBeets\nBlack sesame seeds\nEggs\nFish paste\nSeaweed\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\nIn this class\, we’ll be teaching participants how to make the classic California roll as well as unique sushi rolls called Kazari Maki-Zushi.

Please submit your own Haikus for a chance to be a part of the upcoming Haiku exhibition\, “Poetry of Nature.” \nTheme: Haiku are to be written in the spirit of the following quote by Lafcadio Hearn (from an essay “Bits of Poetry” that appeared in Hearn’s book In Ghostly Japan\, 1899) \nThe common art principle of the class of poems under present consideration is identical with the common principle of Japanese pictorial illustration. By the use of a few chosen words the composer of a short poem endeavors to do exactly what a painter endeavors to do with a few strokes of the brush — to evoke an image or a mood — to revive a sensation or emotion. And the accomplishment of this purpose — by poet or by picture maker — depends altogether upon capacity to suggest\, and only suggest. […] a poet would be condemned for attempting any completeness of utterance in a very short poem: his object should be only to stir the imagination without satisfying it. \nSend us your best creations. Entries must be in English. Each entry must be the original\, unpublished work by the author\, and should not be under consideration or publication elsewhere. Appearance of a haiku in any social media renders it ineligible. \nDivisions: \n\nYouth Division (ages 5-15)\nAdult Division (ages 16+)\n\nTopic: Free\nForm: 3 haiku per entrant\nAwards: 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place and three Honorable Mentions\nPrizes: Certificate of Recognition\, Books on Haiku\, Public Display at RESOBOX LIC during the event.\nJudging: Blind\nJudge: Natalia L. Rudychev (http://www.thepoetryofbreath.com/1.html) \n*Email submissions only*\nPlease send your emails to wendy@resobox.com with the following information:\nSubject line: RESOBOX International Haiku Contest + Age of the Author\nInclude: Full name\, postal address\, email\, phone number \nThree haiku per entrant\, there are no rules to syllable count\, between one and four lines written in the spirit of the theme quote above. \nSubmission period: June 19 – July 24\, 2019 \n\nImages by Natalia L. Rudychev are provided for inspirational purposes only.
