SUMMARY:The Seven Gods
DESCRIPTION:What is the 「The Seven Gods」??… \n「The Seven Gods 」is「 Shichifukujin（The Seven Lucky Gods)」 \nShichifukujin are one of Japan’s most cherished cultural symbols\, representing seven deities who bring happiness and fortune to everyday life. The name itself reflects their nature: “Shichi” means seven\, “Fuku” means lucky\, and “Jin” means gods. \nLooking into their history\, although Shichifukujin are widely revered in Japan\, only one of them—Ebisu—actually originates from Japanese mythology. The remaining six deities have roots in India and China\, reflecting Japan’s unique culture of adopting and integrating elements from various traditions. \nA cultural practice known as Shichifukujin Meguri (Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage) also exists in Japan. This tradition\, typically observed from January 1st to 7th\, involves visiting shrines and temples dedicated to each of Shichifukujin to receive their blessings for the new year. \nIn this performance\, Shichifukujin wear masks\, symbolizing their divine personas. However\, beneath these masks lie their true emotions—hidden truths that play a crucial role in driving the story forward. \n\nSynopsis \nThe story takes place at a shrine on New Year’s Day. Shichifukujin have gathered to grant people’s wishes. As worshippers take turns offering their prayers\, a young girl suddenly bursts in. \n“Please save my mother—” \nHer wish concerns a human life. However\, the gods are bound by a sacred law: they must not interfere with human fate. Breaking this rule is forbidden. \nYet\, despite being gods\, they have emotions. Doubt creeps into their hearts—should they uphold the law\, or defy it? As the debate unfolds\, each god is forced to confront their own beliefs and make a choice. \nThen comes the moment of decision— \nAs gods and as beings with emotions\, what choice will they make? \n  \n※At the beginning of the performance\, there will be an opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese custom. Up to five audience members can participate on a first-come\, first-served basis. Participation is entirely optional\, so if you are interested\, please feel free to let us know at the reception desk. \n————- \nThe following items\, used during the performance\, are available for purchase at the venue. \n  \n\nTenugui (Japanese hand towel) featuring the design used in the performance\nFuroshiki (wrapping cloth) featuring the design used in the performance\nDrinks (including Japanese green tea)\nLight snacks (edamame\, dorayaki)\n\n  \nThese items will help you experience the atmosphere of the performance even more! \n※The available payment methods are: Cash\, Venmo\, Zelle \n  \n  \n \nCreative/Production \nDirector/Choreographer: Tamaki Horibe \nAssistant Director: Ryoka Matsumoto \nAssistant Director/Choreographer: Fuka Kojima \nChoreographer: Tomoe Tatewaki \nVocal Line Composer: Liana Kurogi \nCostume Designer: Miu Koike \nLogo Designer: Yuka Matsumoto \nFlyer Designer: Ai Tsujimoto \nProduced by: Edamovement Lab \nCollaborating Partner: wuhao newyork Tenugui Art \nOfficial Sponsor: Brooklyn Ball Factory \nHosted by: RESOBOX

SUMMARY:Virtual Japanese Flower Arrangement Misho Ikebana Class
DESCRIPTION:Simple and easy Ikebana at your home\nWhen you hear about Ikebana\, maybe you think you need special tools and skills.  For this class\, we will help you make a simple Ikebana arrangement at your home using standard tools you probably already have. A few things you will need: \n\nYou will need to find your own flowers. We are sorry that we are unable to deliver flowers to your home (try calling around; some local shops will deliver). But any flowers are OK! Just make sure to get 2-3 varieties\, and choose what you like. We don’t need a lot.\nYou will need clippers or scissors that you don’t mind using to cut flower stems.\nA vase. If you don’t have a vase\, you can use a glass\, a coffee cup\, a cereal bowl\, or your choice of container\, as long as it has a little depth. You might even surprise yourself with how nice a non-traditional vase can look with a cute arrangement of flowers.\n\n*If you have your own Kenzan\, Flower Pin\, or Pin Frog\, you can use it. And if you want to buy one\, you can order on Amazon online. Go to the link. \n\n\nIn this class\, we will check each student’s tools and flowers\, then help you with tips on how to build up and create your own Ikebana arrangement. \nFor this Ikebana class\, bring your creativity and we will support you with some Ikebana theory. The most important thing is that flowers can help you relax and this class can be a therapeutic time for you to focus and create. You don’t need so many rules: let’s relax and enjoy touching flowers while adding life and warmth to your home in this class. \n\n**Classes will be held via the Zoom Video Conferencing application\, a private Zoom link will be sent to participants before the class begins. The classes will be held in Eastern Time. \n \n\n\n\nIkebana\, well-known as traditional Japanese flower arrangement\, was developed as a Buddhist expression of the beauty of nature. There are many Ikebana “ryuha”\, or schools\, and various styles of arrangement within each. In this class\, instructor Ryoko Arnwine will introduce you to Misho-Ryu Ikebana and teach you how to have fun arranging flowers in an open and approachable environment.  \nIn class\, Ryoko will first demonstrate how to arrange Ikebana and teach participants a few basic techniques and rules. After the demonstration\, participants will be able to get hands-on and arrange their own Ikebana\, while the instructor provides help along the way. When you learn by doing\, it’s easier to internalize the process and techniques than if you focus on memorizing a bunch of rules first. \nInstructor Ryoko Arnwine wants all participants feel how beautiful the Japanese art of flowers is. Join her to experience a new hands-on way of expressing the beauty of nature. \nClass Schedule for 2026:\n\nJanuary 4th\nFebruary 1st\nMarch 1st\nApril 5th\nMay 3rd\nJune 7th\nJuly 5th\nAugust 2nd\nSeptember 6th\nOctober 4th\nNovember 1st\nDecember 6th\n\nAll classes take place from 12pm-1pm (ET)

SUMMARY:Chashaku Carving Workshop: Make Your Own Tea Scoop
DESCRIPTION:The chashaku 茶杓 is also referred to as “the sword of the tea master”. Beginning with Sen-no-Rikyu and Furuta Oribe\, many tea masters have carved their own chashaku to express their personal aesthetic sense. These chashaku are known through historical record\, and some survive to this day. \nJust as a Zen monk puts their whole spirit into their brush when creating their work of calligraphy and just as a warrior puts all of their power into a single cut of the sword\, the chashaku is the ultimate utensil that embodies the tea master’s soul. \nYou don’t need to be a tea master to make your own chashaku. Chanoyu Week NYC 2023 presents this lecture\, workshop\, and matcha making session to offer you first-hand experience – no prior knowledge required. Once you finish carving and are ready to enjoy tea\, the final touch is naming your chashaku with a simple word that symbolizes your thoughts in this special moment. Let’s carve the one and only chashaku in the world that represents the “you” in 2023 together! \nBecause of the use of knives and sharp tools for carving\, this workshop is not recommended for young children. The organizers are not responsible for any injuries sustained during this workshop. Participants should wear comfortable clothing that may get messy during the carving process.

SUMMARY:Tsutefude: Calligraphy for a Modern Age
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, even beginners to brush pens can make words into art using “tsutefude\,” or brush pen technique. Tsutefude has become popular in Japan in recent years as a more accessible style of calligraphy. In Japan\, the cultural tradition of calligraphy known as “shodo” has blossomed over the centuries\, yet even Japanese people can struggle with handling the brushes and obtaining the materials needed to practice\, like inkstone and sumi ink. The brush pen used in this workshop retains the feel of a traditional brush while containing ink similar to fountain pen ink\, allowing the ink to flow through the tip. This allows people of all experience levels and backgrounds to enjoy calligraphy! \n \nThis workshop covers everything you need to know to make beautiful artwork: \n1. Learn how to use a brush pen: \nCharacteristics of a brush pen\nHow to hold a brush pen\nHow to create lines with a brush pen \n2. Practice by imitating examples in both Japanese and English using the tsutefude technique: \nChoose from two examples and practice the characters:\n1. 愛(Love)\n2. 笑顔(Smile) \n3. Use a brush pen in your favorite color to create a message card: \nPick either a postcard or a folded greeting card\, and decorate it using the characters practiced in step 2 \nAll materials will be provided for this event\, so you don’t need to bring anything other than yourself!

SUMMARY:Sumi-e (Ink Painting) Class
DESCRIPTION:“If we study Japanese art\, we see a man who is undoubtedly wise\, philosophic and intelligent\, who spends his time doing what? …He studies a single blade of grass.” \n-Vincent van Gogh \nSumi-e\, also called Suibokuga\, is the art of ink wash-painting. Characteristically\, it is an East Asian art\, and has been practiced there for well over a thousand years. Sumi-e depicts the spirit or essence of an object or scene rather than its outward appearance — and does so in the fewest possible strokes. Because of this simplicity\, the painter’s character and personality come through in his/her work. In both viewing and creating\, Sumi-e is a very contemplative form of painting.
