SUMMARY:Sumi-E: Japanese Ink Painting - Goldfish
DESCRIPTION:Sumi-e\, also called Suibokuga\, is the art of ink wash-painting. Characteristically\, it is an East Asian art\, and has been practiced there for well over a thousand years. Sumi-e depicts the spirit or essence of an object or scene rather than its outward appearance — and does so in the fewest possible strokes. Because of this simplicity\, the painter’s character and personality come through in his/her work. In both viewing and creating\, Sumi-e is a very contemplative form of painting. \nIn this class at RESOBOX\, a Japanese cultural center in New York\, all students will start from the basics of ink-wash painting\, such as how to hold a brush. All materials such as ink\, brushes\, calligraphy paper\, etc. will be provided for the students. \n\n\n\n$40 / person \nAll materials included \n\nReserve Your Spot \n\nPLEASE NOTE: The sign-up deadline is 72 hours before the class begins. Cancellations after this period will NOT be refunded.\n  \n\nLearn more about Sumi-E class at RESOBOX \nView class page → \n

SUMMARY:Chanoyu: Japanese Tea Ceremony at the Table
DESCRIPTION:During a tea ceremony\, powdered green tea\, or matcha\, is prepared using traditional tea utensils. The series of movements and associated ritual\, based in Zen Buddhism\, help to calm the mind and improve concentration. A bowl of matcha prepared and sipped in this setting will have a deeper\, richer taste than usual\, permeating the entire body. \n\n\n\n\n  \nPLEASE NOTE: The class sign up deadline is 72 hours before the class begins. SUMMARY:Virtual Ikebana class - Misho Style
DESCRIPTION:Classes will be held via the Zoom Video Conferencing application\, a private Zoom link will be sent to participants before the class begins. The classes will be held in Eastern Time. \n  \nA few things you will need before the class: \n1. You will need to find your own flowers. We are sorry that we are unable to deliver flowers to your home (try calling around; some local shops will deliver). But any flowers are OK! Just make sure to get 2-3 varieties\, and choose what you like. We don’t need a lot. \n2. You will need clippers or scissors that you don’t mind using to cut flower stems. \n3. A vase. If you don’t have a vase\, you can use a glass\, a coffee cup\, a cereal bowl\, or your choice of container\, as long as it has a little depth. You might even surprise yourself with how nice a non-traditional vase can look with a cute arrangement of flowers. \n*If you have your own Kenzan\, Flower Pin\, or Pin Frog\, you can use it. And if you want to buy one\, you can order on Amazon online. \nIn this class\, we will check each student’s tools and flowers\, then help you with tips on how to build up and create your own Ikebana arrangement. \n  \n\n\n$30 / person \nAll materials included \n\nReserve Your Spot \n\nPLEASE NOTE: The class sign up deadline is 72 hours before the class begins. Cancellation after this period will NOT be refunded.\n  \n\nLearn more about Virtual Ikebana class at RESOBOX \nView class page →

SUMMARY:Nerikiri Wagashi: Japanese Sculpted Confectionery - Morning glories\, Hibiscus\, and Hozuki
DESCRIPTION:The instructor: Yuki Sakura \nIn this session\, we will create three types of Nerikiri: a morning glories\, a hibiscus\, and a hozuki (Japanese lantern plants) —flowers that shine beautifully in the bright light of July and bring a touch of seasonal charm. As you create these nerikiris\, you’ll be able to feel the unique breath of July’s season. Morning glories that bloom coolly in the early light\, hibiscus glowing vividly under the summer sun\, and hozuki that evoke the quiet charm of evening. Enjoy shaping these glimpses of midsummer scenery gently in the palm of your hand. \nThis workshop offers more than the joy of tasting Wagashi — it gives you the experience of creating edible art with your own hands. Simple hand movements such as pressing\, pinching\, and layering transform into moments of artistic expression. Through this hands-on experience\, you will discover the unique beauty of Japanese food culture. \nAt the end of the class\, you’ll take home the Nerikiris you lovingly crafted yourself. I hope you’ll share them with your family and friends\, revisiting the stories and moments from the workshop as you admire and enjoy the sweets you created with your own hands. \n  \n\n\n$80 / person \nAll materials included \n\nReserve Your Spot \n\nPLEASE NOTE: The class sign up deadline is 72 hours before the class begins.
During the ceremony\, silence is maintained\, allowing  subtle sounds and nuances of light that are normally overlooked to take center stage. A bowl of matcha prepared and sipped in this setting will have a deeper\, richer taste than usual\, permeating the entire body. \n\n\n\n\n  \nPLEASE NOTE: The class sign up deadline is 72 hours before the class begins. Cancellation after this period will NOT be refunded. \n\n\n$40 / person \nAll materials included \n\nReserve Your Spot \n\n  \n\nLearn more about Chanoyu class at RESOBOX \nView class page → \n

SUMMARY:Nerikiri Wagashi: Japanese Sculpted Confectionery – Morning Glory\, Fireworks\, and Sunflower
DESCRIPTION:The instructor: Yuki Sakura \nIn this session\, we will create three types of Nerikiris inspired by the breath of midsummer—Morning glory\, Fireworks\, and Sunflower. The morning glory that blooms with a cool elegance in the quiet morning light\, the sunflower lifting its face boldly toward the summer sun\, and the burst of fireworks that paints the night sky in vivid color. Enjoy shaping each of these shimmering moments of summer gently in the palms of our hands.
