Rudychev! Please submit your own Haikus for a chance to be a part of the upcoming Haiku exhibition\, “Poetry of Nature.” \nTheme: Haiku are to be written in the spirit of the following quote by Lafcadio Hearn (from an essay “Bits of Poetry” that appeared in Hearn’s book In Ghostly Japan\, 1899) \nThe common art principle of the class of poems under present consideration is identical with the common principle of Japanese pictorial illustration. By the use of a few chosen words the composer of a short poem endeavors to do exactly what a painter endeavors to do with a few strokes of the brush — to evoke an image or a mood — to revive a sensation or emotion. And the accomplishment of this purpose — by poet or by picture maker — depends altogether upon capacity to suggest\, and only suggest. […] a poet would be condemned for attempting any completeness of utterance in a very short poem: his object should be only to stir the imagination without satisfying it. \nSend us your best creations. Entries must be in English. Each entry must be the original\, unpublished work by the author\, and should not be under consideration or publication elsewhere. Appearance of a haiku in any social media renders it ineligible. \nDivisions: \n\nYouth Division (ages 5-15)\nAdult Division (ages 16+)\n\nTopic: Free\nForm: 3 haiku per entrant\nAwards: 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place and three Honorable Mentions\nPrizes: Certificate of Recognition\, Books on Haiku\, Public Display at RESOBOX LIC during the event.\nJudging: Blind\nJudge: Natalia L. Rudychev are provided for inspirational purposes only.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Tofu - Vegan Cooking Class
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to cook with a protein-rich\, healthful superfood – tofu. \nFor ages\, tofu has been one of the most-loved foods in Japan for its health benefits and this versatile ingredient can be transformed into a variety of delicious food and dessert. This time\, we will cook with Johnny Tofu\, a popular silken tofu from Otokomae-Tofu in Kyoto\, Japan\, which can be purchased in New York. Among all types of tofu\, the silken tofu has the highest water content with the smoothest texture.  To make the most of this smooth and silky texture\, we will cook creamy herbed tofu ricotta to make a gluten-free lasagna as well as a melt-in-mouth dark chocolate tofu pudding. Each student will get a 9” x 9” aluminum casserole pan and prepare their own bake-ready lasagna to take home. Also the instructor will serve pre-cooked lasagna for students to taste at the end of the class. All materials are included in the ticket price. \nIn this class\, you will also learn: \n\nHow to choose the right type of tofu type for your cooking\nWhere to buy good tofu and what to look out for when selecting\nHow to prepare tofu for cooking\nHow to preserve tofu after you open the package\nHealth benefits of tofu\n\nHere is our ingredients line-up scheduled for the class. \n\nHerbed Tofu GF Lasagna: silken tofu\, cashew nuts\, fresh basil\, garlic\, mushrooms\, marinara sauce\nMuddy Dark Chocolate Tofu Pudding: silken tofu\, dark chocolate\, medjool dates\, fresh raspberries\n\nThe class is hands-on and we will all cook together and eat the food we made at the end of the class.  It is always very interactive and a fun atmosphere. The event will be followed by a Japanese Vegan food festival at the same venue\, so we hope you can join both to enjoy all the tasty plant-based food with us! \nFor any inquires about the class and ingredients we will be using\, please feel free to contact the instructor\, Keiko Tanaka\, from her Instagram account or website. \nInstagram: @vegan_o_clock \nWebsite: www.blankslatenewyork.com \n

SUMMARY:Paint your own Daruma and Fortune Cat
DESCRIPTION:Daruma\, a hollow\, round\, Japanese traditional doll modeled after Bodhidharma\, the founder of the Zen tradition of Buddhism\, is now widely known these days thanks to Japanese comics and animations. Users of Daruma first make a wish and paint/draw in one eye on the doll. After their wish is granted\, they fill in the other eye. It is a very popular good luck charm in Japan. \nFortune cats/lucky cats are also a very popular form of a good luck charm. Depending on the color and the side of the arm it is raising\, it can mean to bring people luck or money. \nIn this workshop\, you will paint your own Daruma and Fortune Cat figures made of paper mache\, or washi paper. These traditional good luck charms are normally much larger in size\, but the ones you will paint will be smaller. For centuries\, these are still very much loved in the Japanese culture. \nLet’s make a one of a kind good luck charm for yourself and grant a wish! \n\nSee artist and instructor\, Hiromu Moulinette (Morine)’s current exhibition\,  「掌の宇宙」 Cosmos on the Palm starting June 22 at RESOBOX LIC! \nAlso check out Hiromu’s workshop on Asobi no Tsugi ~ Fixing Pottery and Ceramics using Traditional Japanese Methods this June 22nd and 23rd at 4:15pm!

SUMMARY:Cosmos on the Palm
DESCRIPTION:“Why did you become a traditional artisan?” This is the most frequently asked question for me\, being Japanese\, living in Japan and being a Japanese traditional artisan. My answer is always simple. “Why ask? Try it for yourself!” \nThere are so many techniques and culture that has been lost or long forgotten. I was born in Kyoto\, surrounded by full of heritage and traditions. I never thought that these things around me was so valuable\, so fragile\, and so easily gone forever. As I grew up here in the US in Virginia\, its was the turning point of my life. One day I was asked\, “Why doesn’t your country value your culture more?” It was shocking. I never thought of such nor never imagined how things were so rapidly changing in Japan. \nAs I returned to Japan\, I started working as a character designer for the game industry. It was the state of art of the period\, and was the most promoted job. But as I worked more\, I felt that I was missing something in my life. I was just messing with data and things were all digital within the monitor. I wondered what I wanted to become. Then I remembered the question that I was asked while in the states. \nI looked for a field of traditional work that was about to cease its history. That is how I became one of the only three Japanese automata builder. I also wanted to be unique\, so I decided to be an artisan specializing in a precision miniatures especially of a Japanese folk toys. I am self taught as there was no where I could learn what I wanted to know. From there creating something “different” became my life. My hands create various things that fit on the palm of the hand. All the pieces on the palm shine as the stars in the galaxy\, and talks to whoever is seeing it. \nI am an Artist\, and I am an Artisan at the same time. I will keep creating something different\, with the techniques that have been passed on for generations\, spiced with my sense and flavor. \n\nJoin artist Hiromu Moulinette (Morine)’s workshops on how to make his miniatures and pieces! DESCRIPTION:Taisan Tanaka is Japanese style painter. He newest exhibition “妖怪展 -NANKAYOUKAI-” at RESOBOX East Village revolves around the mythical Youkai creatures of Japan. The exhibition totals around 15 paintings depicting Youkai with Japanese letters. \nWhat is Youkai?\nIt has long been told in Japan that when one encounters a strange or peculiar phenomenon he/she suspects that Youkai must be manipulating this.\nIt is said that Youkai not only punishes people for their laziness and selfishness but also teaches them to take good care of things and to respect nature and environment. SUMMARY:Unique Sushi Roll Workshop Vol. 17 Rainbow Roll and Penguin
DESCRIPTION:Color your world with these fun Rainbow and penguin sushi rolls! Impress your friends with what you learn about this Kazari Maki-Zushi class! These two kinds of character sushi for this class are made with natural ingredients (as listed below) that taste great\, just like regular sushi! By manipulating the natural colors of each ingredient\, you can design an interesting and delicious sushi piece. The cute designs on these Spring sushi can be made easily\, so no sushi-making experience is required and it’s a good way to impress your friends at any party! \nIngredients\nRainbow roll \n\nSushi Rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nSeaweed\nKanikama (crab sticks)\nCucumber\nAvocado\nCream Cheese\nSalmon\nSoy Sheet\nEggs\nSesame Seeds\n\nPenguin roll \n\nSushi Rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nSeaweed\nCooked Eggs\nBlack Sesame Seeds\nSpinach\n\nIn this class\, we’ll be teaching participants how to make the classic California roll as well as unique sushi rolls called Kazari Maki-Zushi. Kazari Maki-Zushi is a patterned or decorative sushi that is derived from the several sushi techniques such as Saiku sushi and Futomaki sushi. It is undoubtedly sushi\, but the appearance and design of each roll are filled with endless possibilities! A Kazari Maki-Zushi’s design can be anything – flowers\, fruit\, animals\, words and even logos! Whatever your creativeness allows\, Kazari Maki-Zushi can be almost anything. Using various natural colors of ingredients you see every day\, Kazari Maki-Zushi is a fun way to play around with sushi designs. This food/art form has been developed for over 150 years\, and still\, new ideas are created everyday in Japan. And it’s even a great way to show off your artistic skills at parties or potlucks! \nAlthough it looks difficult\, this decorative sushi is very simple and easy to make! No prior experience is necessary as it involves a different process than creating regular sushi. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is much like building with Legos\, where each piece is stacked to make a picture!  \nKazari Maki-Sushi represents an important unique aspect in Japanese food –  not only in taste\, but also in the beautiful visual appearance that serves to please those who enjoy it. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is also a great way to enjoy company\, whether it be friends or family and is especially popular with kids! Even if your homemade Kazari Maki-Zushi isn’t well-prepared\, the process of making and seeing your finished pieces on the dining table creates joy for all who see (and eat!) it. \nFor more workshops in this series\, visit our Japanese Cooking Workshop and Kazari Maki-Zushi Workshop Series page.

DESCRIPTION:You’ll see demonstrations of \n\nhow to make Corn Miso for Summer (味噌)\nhow to make shio-koji (塩糀)\nhow to make misodama (味噌玉)\nhow to make takikomi gohan (味噌炊き込みご飯)\nhow to make kimchi base for fast kimchi (because summer is coming!)\nhow to make namemiso (not fish or chicken but vegan) toasted almond kisses\n\nThe point of all these items is to show you what to do with what you have on hand\, and what you can access. Got kids? Work\, like even two jobs ? Need to spend less time and money cooking and more time enjoying food? We know what you need to know. \nMakiko Ishida (Maki) is a koji enthusiast\, and a busy parent that knows how to budget time without sacrificing nutrition or taste for her family. A native Tokyoite who was born into a katsuobushi (fermented bonito) trading family. Maki-san has a unique sense of how to blend traditional Japanese food with everyday American fare. She likes to share easy and fast Japanese home-cooking ideas using koji-fermented staples such as miso\, soy sauce\, mirin\, shio-koji\, and sake that anyone can apply into his or her own kitchen. \nSometimes Chefs have access to fresh ingredients that a forager\, farmer or artisan just harvested or made\, other times they have to deal with what they ordered or shopped for versus what is in the house. It’s really a bigger version of what we all go through at home when tired or busy or exhausted. That doesn’t mean you can’t use something in your pantry\, refrigerator or from your local store and make something filling and very tasty. \nChef Ken Fornataro will show you how to make food if you have miso\, koji\, shio-koji\, soy sauce\, mirin and other ingredients ready to go with  quick trip to the farmers market\, your local salad bar\, the super market or a dig into your CSA box or your pantry or refrigerator. Even for picky kids – we know all about the young stubborn ones – and people that are eating a vegan diet. \nOften you can prepare things that will last for days or weeks\, requiring only what you want to eat fresh that day. \nBased on the demonstrations we’ll have – if accessing the ingredients makes sense and preferably uses ugly vegetables\, the following\, all vegan\, mostly gluten free items: \nMenu: \n\nFried Garlic\, Pickled Jalapeño\, and Tomatillo Salsa\nSzechuan Sauerkraut with pastrami flavored smoked hamma natto (koji based)\nShiitake Kombu Dashi Dama\nGohan Takikomi (recipe below)\nEdamame Crispy Beans (glazed with a shio-koji plum mirin)\nJasmine Amasake (sweet\, thick\, koji based rice)\nMiso Mayo Dip (miso\, mayo with special seasonings\, radishes)\nCucumber Misozuke (Cukes aged in a black pepper miso)\nSpicy Ginger\, Carrot\, Garlic\, and Onion Kimchi\nCoriander Seed\, Fennel and Lime Rind pickles\nToasted Almond Kisses (savory\, nutty\, sweet namemiso based)\nGarlic Misozuke (Fresh garlic fermented in miso)\n\nIf you are a member of culturesgroup MeetUp\, Evolving lifestyles\, or nycferments\, $20. SUMMARY:ISHIZUKADACHI IN NEW YORK: Makoto Ishizuka Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Makoto Ishizuka was born in Yokohama\, Japan in 1982. After working as a musician and assistant director of a popular TV program in Tokyo\, he got a chance to meet Akihiro Nishino\, an acclaimed author/illustrator of children’s books and a member of the popular Japanese comedian duo named King Kong. Since then\, he has helped to make the duo’s promotional films and annual events for which Ishizuka’s work is highly praised. Working alongside talented comedians\, filmmakers and photographers\, he has been expanding his career in not only film production but also photography. \nHis passion for photography started after meetings those in need in society who are disabled and struggle with physical and or mental illnesses. His thoughts toward this population were a little bit biased initially\, but they were dramatically changed after a meeting with a mom and her disabled child. He offered to take a photo of the child\, thinking that likely they would reject the offer. To his surprise\, they were rather happy with the offer from a professional photographer like Makoto. He realized that his work could shed a light on those in need. \nThis single event eventually led him to focus on portraits. He has captured portraits of over 300 people so far\, all standing straight with their feet shoulder width apart\, looking directly at his lens. This specific portrait style got an attention and now called “Ishizuka-Dachi.” This is his first “Ishizuka-Dachi” photo exhibition. \n \nGenerous monetary supports\, totaling $17\,000\, from his supporters and friends in both Japan and US made it possible to hold this exhibition. \nMakoto Ishizuka himself will be in the gallery during the exhibition. Please feel free to come by. He is looking forward to meeting you there. Thank you.

SUMMARY:Koji Cooking Demonstrations and Tastings for Busy People
DESCRIPTION:You’ll see demonstrations of \n\nhow to make Corn Miso for Summer (味噌)\nhow to make shio-koji (塩糀)\nhow to make misodama (味噌玉)\nhow to make takikomi gohan (味噌炊き込みご飯)\nhow to make kimchi base for fast kimchi (because summer is coming!)\nhow to make namemiso (not fish or chicken but vegan) toasted almond kisses\n\nThe point of all these items is to show you what to do with what you have on hand\, and what you can access. Bring cash and pay there if you like. So please join the group and register for the event! Hope to see you there! koji@earthlink.net with questions! \nContact us!\nkoji@earthlink.net\nculturesgroup@earthlink.net\nwww.culturesgroup.net\nfacebook.com/groups/pickles/\nInstagram: @culturesgroup\nwww.meetup.com/culturesgroup/ \n\nMiso Takikomi Gohan (味噌炊き込みご飯) \n\nIngredients \n\nRice 1 cup + 2⁄3 cup (about 300 grams)\nWater 2 cup (400 ml)\nMiso 2 TBSP\nSoy Sauce 1 TBSP\nSake 1 TBSP\nMirin 1 TBSP\nSesame Oil 1 TSP (Suggested\, substitute with what you have)\nCarrots 2 small roots\, finely chopped\nKonjac 1⁄2 of a 90 oz package\, finely chopped\nDeep Fried Tofu (Abura-agé) 1 sheet\, cut in small strips Fresh Ginger 3 TBSP\, finely julienned (optional)\nShichimi Pepper (optional)\n\nDirections\n\nMix Miso\, Soy Sauce\, Sake\, Mirin\, and Sesame Seed Oil well and pour onto the rice in a\nrice cooker (or a pot with lid).\nAdd water.\nAdd vegetables and tofu.
