DESCRIPTION:About “Karappo” (Live Art Performance)\nI\, the painter\, Ryoko has done her live painting with various DJ\, musicians\, make-up & hair artists\, and dancers. I’ve decided to perform these pieces with drummer Matsu titled “karappo.” I have known Matsu for around ten years and have always admired his performances and respect his feelings for music. I’m very glad to have this chance to perform alongside him. \n“Karappo” means “empty” in Japanese. Sometimes thinking too much may break a person. Only genuineness is eternal. It is important to just feel. \nWe aren’t attaching any themes to “Karappo.” RESOBOX is opening their space for us. The audience’s breaths\, voices\, and noises will make the air there. The air is going to make Matsu’s sounds. The sounds is going to make Ryoko’s art.  \nI’ll put my all on the canvas in the moment.

SUMMARY:Vegan Japanese Cooking Workshop: Cook with Miso to Fuel Your Body and Mind
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, you will learn how to cook with miso\, an ancient Japanese superfood which is made from protein-rich soybeans. Miso is an essential base of Japanese cooking which has the saltiness\, sweetness\, and umami all in one. The class setting will be a small group of up to six people for a more interactive\, hands-on experience for all participants. \nThe dishes we are cooking together will be Miso-glazed Tofu Bowl and Aunti Mieko’s GMMD (Goma Miso Mayo Dip). The recipe was created with ingredients that you can find in the majority of local grocery stores that carry asian ingredients. It was also designed in a way that you can recreate the dishes at home using the techniques you learn in the class. We will be cooking with hand-picked fresh organic produce and non-GMO ingredients. \nIn the beginning of the class\, we will go over basic types of miso\, its flavor profiles and characteristics\, health benefits of miso and fermented food. Then we will cook the dishes together using other Japanese cooking essentials like soy sauce\, mirin (cooking wine) and tofu. At the end of the class we will sit down at a table and enjoy the food we made. If the participants are interested\, the instructor will show off a few food photography hacks using your smartphone for beautiful instagram photos! \n

SUMMARY:FLOATING WORLD: Pleasure & Entertainment in Meiji Japan
DESCRIPTION:Nineteenth Century Photographs from The Burns Archive\nRESOBOX gallery is proud to present the seventh annual exhibition from The Burns Collection & Archive. The floating world encapsulates the hedonistic urban lifestyle\, especially the pleasure seeking aspects\, that emerged during Edo period Japan. Images of floating world culture depict the pleasures and entertainments of Meiji Japan – the world of geishas and courtesans\, kabuki actors\, and sumo wrestlers. Tea houses\, theaters and brothels are backdrops for the floating world’s universe of extravagance. Ukiyo-e means “pictures of the floating world\,” and in the spirit of the colorful woodblock prints created during the Edo period\, this exhibit utilizes original nineteenth century hand-painted photographs reproduced on varied media\, such as wood and metal\, as well as original historic prints. \n\nThe Burns Collection & Archive\nFrom the birth of photography through the modern age\, with more than one million historic photographs\, The Burns Archive provides photographic evidence of forgotten\, unseen and disquieting aspects of history. It was established in 1975 by Stanley B. Burns\, MD\, FACS\, a New York City ophthalmologist and photo-historian. For over forty years\, thousands of publishers\, exhibitors\, authors\, researchers\, artists and filmmakers have utilized this unique source of visual documentation. The Archive is best known for images of the darker side of life – death\, disease\, crime\, racism\, revolution and war – however\, a large part of the collection depicts aspects of social and cultural life. A favorite and compelling category are nineteenth-century Japanese hand-painted photographs. \nDr. Burns and his daughter Elizabeth have co-authored two books on Japanese photographic history\, Setting Sun: Painted Photographs of Meiji Japan (2017) and Geisha: A Photographic History 1872-1912 (2008)\, which explores the life and culture of Geisha during the Meiji Era. SUMMARY:Flakes of Dream
DESCRIPTION:I am a multidisciplinary artist in Brooklyn\, New York. I was born and raised in the countryside of Japan surrounded by mountains\, green tea fields\, and the Pacific Ocean. Influenced by organic materials and nature\, I draw animals\, lines and shapes mimicking natural elements and life such as the wind\, plants and the ocean. For my abstract landscape\, I use acrylic or oil on canvas. I transfer images of my memories into simple geometric shapes such as squares\, circle or lines. \nSpecially\, I draw many circles influenced by Enso (Circle in Zen). The shape symbolizes life\, sun\, light\, spirit\, peace\, infinity\, interminable\, perfection\, and continuance for me. \nAll of my works somehow pertain to human life\, society and nature. For example\, paintings of the main character\, the frog\, is a symbol of fertility\, transformation\, mystery\, and renewal. It is standing\, sitting\, thinking\, eating\, dancing\, disguising\, sleeping\, etc. The frog tricks people. It is to convey such symbolism\, but also to suggest a possible sinister side to his behavior. \nAlso my interest in making installations and performance are due to my desire to engage viewers in all of their senses: sight\, hearing\, smell\, touch and sometimes even taste. I also enjoy making installations because there are many possibilities to incorporate all kinds of media. For example 1000+ paper cranes Angel Wings were inspired by Japanese legend\, that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes\, his/her wish come true. The crane is one of the mystical creatures and symbol of peace. The eggshells in Precarious also pertain to human life\, in that they are fragile but also full of mystery\, potential and everyday magic\, provided they are taken care of. \n \nFlakes of Dream from Sophia Chizuco and Tina Wang. \n\nClosing Reception\nPlease join us for the closing reception this Sunday\, March 3rd from 5:00PM – 6:30 PM. SUMMARY:Oscar Brekell on Teruyuki Isobe’s Teapots
DESCRIPTION:When I first came in contact with Teruyuki Isobe’s teapots in 2014\, I was not only amazed by their aesthetic qualities\, but also impressed by how well they worked as tools for steeping great tasting tea. Made with great precision and care\, they are always light and easy to both grip and to pour with. \nNeedless to say steeping tea also requires a lot of precision and care\, and therefore the importance of the teapot as a tool cannot be stressed enough. A poor teapot can easily ruin a good tea but a well crafted one can on the other hand enhance both the taste and flavor. In this sense any teapot made by Isobe makes a reliable ally in the tea lovers quest for the perfect cup of tea. In my case\, I even dare say that Isobe’s teapots made me in charge of my tea steeping in a way that I had never experienced so far in my life. \nPerhaps it is his background as a practitioner of the art of Sencha that makes Teruyuki Isobe able to make teapots that embody both beauty and functionality at the same time. His devotion both as a potter and as an artist continues on to inspire and bring joy to tea lovers in Japan as well as overseas. SUMMARY:On the Road to Dunhuang: Music from the Dunhuang Caves\, the Ottoman Empire\, and Medieval Spain
DESCRIPTION:Founded and co-directed by Tomoko Sugawara and August Denhard\, the Eurasia Consort brings together two specialists in the ancient musical traditions of East Asia\, the Middle East\, and Europe. Through their research\, teaching\, and performances\, they seek a common understanding of the world’s great music traditions along the ancient Silk Road. \nThe Silk Road was an interlocking trade route that connected to the Far East\, Central Asia\, the Middle East\, North Africa and Europe. For about 1\,000 years it was a conduit not only for trade\, but for religions\, ideas\, innovations\, and music. \nDuring the Tang Dynasty\, the Chinese court loved foreign music\, in particular Sogdian music and dance. Sogdians were merchants who controlled trade on the Silk road. From their homeland north of Iran they had set up trading colonies in China. Their masculine dance with high jumps was known as “the Sogdian whirl.” Its music was played by small ensembles comprised of harp\, lute. flute and drums. These are shown on many sixth-century Sogdian sarcophagi\, and wall paintings\, in China. \nTang Dynasty music manuscripts have survived in Japan and China. It is from the first  millennium. By comparison\, the oldest Middle Eastern music is relatively recent (the 13th century)\, and so is the Ottoman repertoire. \nThe concert imagines sounds of the ancient Silk Road\, taking the listener from the caves at Dunhuang\, continuing through the Middle East\, and arriving in Europe. SUMMARY:ORINIGIRI Workshop 7: Create Your Own USA Version "ORINIGIRI!"
DESCRIPTION:ORINIGIRI (a mix between Onigiri and Origami) is now developing and expanding worldwide! \nAs you may know\, onigiri is known as traditional Japanese cuisine common in every Japanese household. Nowadays\, Onigiri is making progress by becoming more world widely known\, including in America! As so\, we decided to fuse ORINIGIRI\, a Japanese concept with American ingredients! ORINIGIRI can be made easily\, tasty and variously by blending different ingredients with white Japanese rice. If you like usual American staples such as roast pork\, smoke salmon\, and cheese\, you can make tasty and even photogenic ORINIGIRI easily by blending these familiar foods. SUMMARY:INHERENT: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Artist Talk organized in conjunction with Yasue Maetake’s exhibition will include guest speaker\, Nataša Prljević\, artist and co-founder of HEKLER\, an interdisciplinary collaborative platform that critically examines hospitality and conflict. Prljević is currently the Executive and Curatorial Assistant at Residency Unlimited (RU). \nTogether they will discuss the creative mechanisms behind Maetake’s material-oriented practice\, her encounters with extrapolations from natural and built environments\, and their organic and anthropomorphic translation in Maetake’s sculptures and installations. These processes will be addressed through an examination of the boundary between materials’ agency to shape itself and the artist’s inherent need to be in control over the outcome. Can the boundary even be defined? SUMMARY:Biotope
DESCRIPTION:Kotaro Isobe solo exhibition\nCurated by Yuki Ideguchi \nA biotope is an area of uniform environmental conditions providing a living place for a specific assemblage of plants and animals. Kotaro Isobe who studied Nihonga (Japanese style painting) at the Tokyo University of the Arts and is good at delicate nature depiction through daily sketches and nature observations. From the early stages of his work\, he emphasizes the nature observation by reproducing the biotope. He paints small creatures such as frogs\, insects\, and flowers that are overlooked in everyday life. \nIn the Meiji Era\, Nihonga were influenced by Western paintings and developed from traditional Japanese paintings. Especially in the postwar Nihonga\, expressions that blur the outline of the picture are mainstream. However\, Isobe’s paintings are composed of beautiful lines and flat paintings. His decorative expression that reminds me of that Rinpa presents one aspect of Japanese beauty that modern Japanese paintings had forgotten. \nIn this exhibition\, we are also focusing on Yo no Bi which means beauty should be found especially in the objects of everyday life. Since ancient times in Japan\, paintings are painted on everyday items and have been enjoyed as part of their lives. In addition to an ordinary painting work\, works drawn on everyday items such as garbage cans and fans are also exhibited. \nOpening Event\nThe opening reception will happen on Wednesday\, October 17 at RESOBOX Chelsea\, at 5:30pm featuring a musical performance by Kenji Haba. This music event is curated by Masatora Goya. \nKenji Haba\nhttp://www.kenjihaba.com \nKenji Haba is a guitarist who heralds a new direction for classical guitar through his insight and work with the coloration of sounds\, as well as through bringing new formats to the landscape\, including the innovative guitar-cello ensemble. He is also an active performer of contemporary music\, with over 20 pieces of music written for and premiered by him\, including works featured in classical guitar magazines in Japan as well as the US. He is well known for his interpretation of Toru Takemitsu\, his performances having been described as an “ideal match for Takemitsu’s music” by Fanfare. \nGuest Curator\nYuki Ideguchi (born 1986) is an artist and curator. He does not only produce art works but also curates several exhibitions and has expanded his world. He received both a BFA (2011) and MFA (2013) in Japanese Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts.
