SUMMARY:On the Road to Dunhuang: Music from the Dunhuang Caves\, the Ottoman Empire\, and Medieval Spain
DESCRIPTION:Founded and co-directed by Tomoko Sugawara and August Denhard\, the Eurasia Consort brings together two specialists in the ancient musical traditions of East Asia\, the Middle East\, and Europe. Through their research\, teaching\, and performances\, they seek a common understanding of the world’s great music traditions along the ancient Silk Road. \nThe Silk Road was an interlocking trade route that connected to the Far East\, Central Asia\, the Middle East\, North Africa and Europe. For about 1\,000 years it was a conduit not only for trade\, but for religions\, ideas\, innovations\, and music. \nDuring the Tang Dynasty\, the Chinese court loved foreign music\, in particular Sogdian music and dance. Sogdians were merchants who controlled trade on the Silk road. From their homeland north of Iran they had set up trading colonies in China. Their masculine dance with high jumps was known as “the Sogdian whirl.” Its music was played by small ensembles comprised of harp\, lute. flute and drums. These are shown on many sixth-century Sogdian sarcophagi\, and wall paintings\, in China. \nTang Dynasty music manuscripts have survived in Japan and China. It is from the first  millennium. By comparison\, the oldest Middle Eastern music is relatively recent (the 13th century)\, and so is the Ottoman repertoire. \nThe concert imagines sounds of the ancient Silk Road\, taking the listener from the caves at Dunhuang\, continuing through the Middle East\, and arriving in Europe. Musical instruments such as various versions of the ones being played today – harp\, lutes\, flutes and percussion – no doubt made the journey as well. \nThe Eurasia Consort: \nTomoko Sugawara: Ancient Harp\, Kugo\nAugust Denhard: Medieval Lute \nProgram\nTalk “Tang Dynasty Court Music” \nTang Dynasty Music: \nRuy Niang 如意娘 \nSui Guzi 水鼓子 (kugo solo) \nQuing Bei Yue 傾杯楽 \nOttoman Music: \n\nNikrȋz Peşrev Ali Ufki Bey (1610-75)\nMȃhȗr Peşrev Gazi Giray Han (1551-1607) \nMedieval French and Spanish Music: \nSanta Maria\, strela do dia Alfonzo X El Sabio (1221-84)\nStella Splendens Llibre Vermell\, 14th Century

DESCRIPTION:Get in the holiday spirit and make your own adorable sushi! This Santa and penguin sushi will brighten up any holiday party – even get a few laughs as well! These Kazari Maki-Zushi (sushi with special designs and decorations) are not only delicious to eat\, but also cute and fun to make! By manipulating the natural colors of each ingredient\, you can design an interesting and delicious sushi piece. The cute designs on these holiday sushi can be made easily\, so no sushi-making experience is required and it’s a good way to impress your friends at upcoming holiday parties. \nIngredients\nSanta Sushi \n\nSushi rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\n\nSeaweed\n\n\nSeaweed powder\n\n\nBeets\n\n\nCarrots\n\n\nSeafood sausage\n\n\nCheese sticks\n\n\nMountain gobo (burdock root)\n\nNori\n\nPenguin \n\nSushi rice\nSeaweed\nEggs\nBlack sesame seeds\nSpinach\n\nWhat is Kazari Maki-Zushi?\nKazari Maki-Zushi is a patterned or decorative sushi that is derived from the several sushi techniques such as Saiku sushi and Futomaki sushi. It is undoubtedly sushi\, but the appearance and design of each roll are filled with endless possibilities! A Kazari Maki-Zushi’s design can be anything – flowers\, fruit\, animals\, words and even logos! Whatever your creativeness allows\, Kazari Maki-Zushi can be almost anything. Using various natural colors of ingredients you see every day\, Kazari Maki-Zushi is a fun way to play around with sushi designs. This food/art form has been developed for over 150 years\, and still\, new ideas are created everyday in Japan. And it’s even a great way to show off your artistic skills at parties or potlucks! \nAlthough it looks difficult\, this decorative sushi is very simple and easy to make! No prior experience is necessary as it involves a different process than creating regular sushi. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is much like building with Legos\, where each piece is stacked to make a picture!  \nKazari Maki-Sushi represents an important unique aspect in Japanese food –  not only in taste\, but also in the beautiful visual appearance that serves to please those who enjoy it. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is also a great way to enjoy company\, whether it be friends or family and is especially popular with kids! Even if your homemade Kazari Maki-Zushi isn’t well-prepared\, the process of making and seeing your finished pieces on the dining table creates joy for all who see (and eat!) it. \nFor more workshops in this series\, visit our Japanese Cooking Workshop and Kazari Maki-Zushi Workshop Series page. \n

SUMMARY:INHERENT: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Artist Talk organized in conjunction with Yasue Maetake’s exhibition will include guest speaker\, Nataša Prljević\, artist and co-founder of HEKLER\, an interdisciplinary collaborative platform that critically examines hospitality and conflict. Prljević is currently the Executive and Curatorial Assistant at Residency Unlimited (RU). \nTogether they will discuss the creative mechanisms behind Maetake’s material-oriented practice\, her encounters with extrapolations from natural and built environments\, and their organic and anthropomorphic translation in Maetake’s sculptures and installations. These processes will be addressed through an examination of the boundary between materials’ agency to shape itself and the artist’s inherent need to be in control over the outcome. Can the boundary even be defined? How does the physical intervention between materials become an ongoing document of penetrating forces between different realms of creation and being? \nRSVP at info@reso203.com \nFind out more about the INHERENT exhibition here.

SUMMARY:Biotope
DESCRIPTION:Kotaro Isobe solo exhibition\nCurated by Yuki Ideguchi \nA biotope is an area of uniform environmental conditions providing a living place for a specific assemblage of plants and animals. Kotaro Isobe who studied Nihonga (Japanese style painting) at the Tokyo University of the Arts and is good at delicate nature depiction through daily sketches and nature observations. From the early stages of his work\, he emphasizes the nature observation by reproducing the biotope. He paints small creatures such as frogs\, insects\, and flowers that are overlooked in everyday life. \nIn the Meiji Era\, Nihonga were influenced by Western paintings and developed from traditional Japanese paintings. Especially in the postwar Nihonga\, expressions that blur the outline of the picture are mainstream. However\, Isobe’s paintings are composed of beautiful lines and flat paintings. His decorative expression that reminds me of that Rinpa presents one aspect of Japanese beauty that modern Japanese paintings had forgotten. \nIn this exhibition\, we are also focusing on Yo no Bi which means beauty should be found especially in the objects of everyday life. Since ancient times in Japan\, paintings are painted on everyday items and have been enjoyed as part of their lives. In addition to an ordinary painting work\, works drawn on everyday items such as garbage cans and fans are also exhibited. \nOpening Event\nThe opening reception will happen on Wednesday\, October 17 at RESOBOX Chelsea\, at 5:30pm featuring a musical performance by Kenji Haba. This music event is curated by Masatora Goya. \nKenji Haba\nhttp://www.kenjihaba.com \nKenji Haba is a guitarist who heralds a new direction for classical guitar through his insight and work with the coloration of sounds\, as well as through bringing new formats to the landscape\, including the innovative guitar-cello ensemble. He is also an active performer of contemporary music\, with over 20 pieces of music written for and premiered by him\, including works featured in classical guitar magazines in Japan as well as the US. He is well known for his interpretation of Toru Takemitsu\, his performances having been described as an “ideal match for Takemitsu’s music” by Fanfare. \nGuest Curator\nYuki Ideguchi (born 1986) is an artist and curator. He does not only produce art works but also curates several exhibitions and has expanded his world. He received both a BFA (2011) and MFA (2013) in Japanese Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts. SUMMARY:INHERENT
DESCRIPTION:RESOBOX is pleased to announce its launch of new gallery program named RESO203 with the exhibition INHERENT — A Solo Presentation of Works by Yasue Maetake. mh PROJECT nyc simultaneously presents this inaugural exhibition to support innovative developments to art in collaboration with the artist. \nMaetake is known primarily for her sculpture and installations; central to this exhibit\, INHERENT will be a series of her new bas-reliefs\, which will cover the walls and ceilings of the gallery as compositional elements. Maetake calls this series\, “Printed Oxidation on Fiber Relief\,” which showcases unusual methods that produce bright\, textured wall pieces created from transformed handmade papers by exposing them to metal corrosion\, thus producing expressive hues of turquoise and reddish-brown residues. The synergy between the objects and exhibition space direct the viewer’s focus to both the artwork and architecture through emphasizing the artist’s distinctive materials. \nInstalled on the ceiling and continuing down the walls\, one of her pieces consists of a very light steel-frame within layers of the fibers. By purposely using these concrete objects\, Maetake expresses a material’s physical presence in flux as it changes from one expression to another in its spatial aspects so that it withstands being captured by the viewer’s gaze. Maetake conjures various associations ranging from natural to industrial imagery and architecture: an implication metaphorically representing the artistic production life-cycle itself\, translated into a statement of political and ecological configurations to be contrasted with images of our fast-paced modern life. All of these transient qualities in Maetake’s work　 suggest that the effects of time on artworks and human creation are explored as vital components of organic\, natural processes. \nCheck out the artist talk event happening Tuesday\, November 13\, 2018 here. \nAbout RESO203\nRESO203 was initiated by RESOBOX that has been a constant station featuring Japanese artifacts by various artists\, regardless of nationality\, to disseminate the culture and philosophy of Japan. RESO203 was made in order to better nourish its cultural heritage and contemporary art multidisciplinary by active and hands-on artists in a variety of media\, as well as introducing a wide range of projects by independent curators. \n\ninfo@reso203.com\nwww.reso203.com\n\nSpecial Thanks\nmh PROJECT nyc\nFor more information\, please contact: \n\nmhprojectnyc@gmail.com\nmhprojectnyc.com

SUMMARY:Superior Woodcrafts from Akita\, Japan: Magewappa\, Beer Cups\, Sake Cups
DESCRIPTION:By Shunji Kurimori & Hiroyuki Hashino \nThe traditional crafts from Akita introduced at this exhibition demonstrate the wealth of natural resources Japan\, the long-established methods of the area’s craftsmanship\, and the relationship between humanity and nature. As “crafts with local flavor” that incorporate all the region’s qualities\, or as traditional tools that still prove useful today\, they integrate easily into one’s lifestyle. In their pursuit of beauty and functionality\, two artisans craft works of austere elegance and careful design that are made for utility. \nThis exhibition of traditional and modern crafts from Akita features two renowned Masters\, Shunji Kurimori & Hiroyuki Hashino. Their works have been displayed at major national and international venues and have received prestigious design awards. \nMage-wappa is a traditional craft that originated in Akita Prefecture. It involves bending strips of Japanese cedar wood to make food vessels and other household items. Using straight grain Akita Cedar\, Mage-wappa art craft was first developed in the beginning of the 17th Century. Its first form took the shape of a lunch box made by a woodcutter in the Odate area of Northern Japan. The Lord of Odate Castle then encouraged the technique in a samurai’s work and it grew in popularity. In recent years the craft has been used as a base for the development of new techniques and modern design. Popular for its straight grain and light weight\, the Akita Cedar used in these products is more than 250 years old. \nShunji Kurimori is a mage-wappa artisan with 46 years of experience and an 18 times winner of the Good Design Award\, and an officially recognized Contemporary Master Craftsman. Committed to using traditional craftsmanship to meet the needs of today\, Kurimori has come up with several groundbreaking mage-wappa designs\, including tapered cups and nesting food containers. A true innovator\, he is driving the evolution of his craft. \nHashino’s unique and innovative designs are crafted from a rare hardwood tree whose wood has a very beautiful grain and texture. In Japanese this tree\, a member of the Birch family\, is called “Onoore Kanba”\, which means “breaking the hatchet birch”. Hashino’s products are made with careful consideration for their materials\, shape and function produce a more beautiful and timeless result. \nHiroyuki Hashino often travels to the United States to introduce his products internationally. In 2012\, he featured his products at Cherry Blossom Festival at Sakura Park\, and also exhibited at American Craft Show in New York. In 2013\, he received the Good Design Award.  Hashino received the Gold Awards Omotenashi Selection 2016\, 2017 and 2018. More than 30 years ago\, Hashino produced his first wooden shoehorn and has been making these beautiful wooden tools with long\, smooth carves ever since. In 2005\, The Imperial Household Agency brought one of this signature pieces for the Emperor of Japan. Since then\, three more sets of Hashino’s shoehorns have also been stocked at the prestigious Nara Hotel\, where the Emperor regularly stays. \nThe exhibited works will include daily commodities; Hashino’s shoehorn introduced by the Imperial Household Agency to the Emperor and his twisted combs that he received the Gold Award Omotenashi Selection 2016 for\, Kurimori’s female lunch boxes that he received the Good Design Award for and his sake bottles and cups he received the Long Life Design Award for\, etc.

SUMMARY:YO no BI (用の美)
DESCRIPTION:Tomoharu Okamura solo exhibition\nCurated by Yuki Ideguchi\nTomoharu Okamura’s work focuses on the addictiveness that light-emitting objects possess. \nHe creates his works based on the idea that people are attracted towards a strong light source\, and that they congregate around various phenomena the light generates. \nJust as bright light that reaches your synapsis could cause a lasting effect on your vision\, tremendously strong light could create addiction but he also believes\, as various types of light brighten the dark places in the world every day\, light has the primordial power to give people a feeling of peace and compassion. \nThings in our daily life that emit or reflect light are of particular interest to Tomoharu. \nLight of course comes in many shapes and forms such as sunlight\, moon light and water glimmering seen naturally\, or street lights\, buildings\, glass and mirrors made artificially. These days\, however\, it is widely recognized that staring at things like TVs\, video games\, computers\, cellphone screens for extended periods can have a deep lasting effect on the body and mind. From prehistoric times\, humans have instinctually been afraid of the dark and have always sought for brightness and therefore our vision\, to this day\, is easily fascinated with self-emanating light sources. It is just normal for people to be mesmerized by light-emitting objects\, he believes. \nIn the present day\, we deal with light emitting objects longer than before and the accumulation of time spent in front of such objects deepens Tomoharu’s fascination towards light and drives him to express it on his canvas. \nTomoharu’s desire for light comes from the Japanese culture as well. In Japan\, gold leafed folding screens with paintings on them were created as light sources to light up the dark. You might think a gold leafed folding screen to be something of decadence but in reality\, it was used in slightly dark and quiet rooms inside wooden buildings and at night they were used to reflect the moonlight or candle light and diffuse it onto the interior of the dark room. Gold foils and white paper applied on the screens therefore had the effect similar to that of a reflector board used in movie sets. White paper base surface is often left intentionally as it is and this technique is called YOHAKU-NO-BI (the beauty of the blank space). With YOHAKU-NO-BI\, the blank spaces without any paint or ink applied offer a sense of the existence of ambience and humidity and this depiction of atmosphere that one cannot see is at the very heart of the essence of Japanese art. \nEnsuring that the surface makes good use of gold and silver foils and blanc white spaces to reflect light in dark rooms has been perceived essential in Japanese paintings even to this day. Tomoharu incorporates metal foils in his art pieces to reflect light to make it seem as if the pieces themselves are emitting light. He carefully chooses the use of paint and motifs to support this effect and the result is our desire stemming from the addictiveness of the light in which we get ourselves bathed every day\, and an opportunity for salvation evoked from this very desire\, all expressed using essential elements nurtured through the history of Japanese art. \nBy making the canvas to emit light\, his works strive to be NIHON-GA (Japanese paintings) that can light up our daily lives. The light that fills the surrounding space(s) carries within it a sense of purity and a certain presence of solemnity. Tomoharu’s works take on the role to provide a glimpse of hope that is universally significant even in this current-day world where we are all poisoned by light. \nNIHONGA involves traditional mineral pigments and/or dyes mixed with NIKAWA\, glue made of animal gelatin\, that are then kneaded with water to make the paint which can then be applied on the [WASHI = traditional Japanese paper] canvas. Tomoharu finds the process of making his art pieces essential so he uses a technique to places layer after layer of paint over each other. Under the multiple layers of his works\, at the deepest level of all\, lay the ideas and embodiment of Japan’s natural climate and ethnicity firmly rooted. \nHe also values the Japanese culture highly and creates works in traditional art forms such as KAKEJIKU in the hope of passing on the craft to the next generation. This view is also closely related to his suggestion of YO-NO-BI (beauty of use) that the beauty that comes out as a result of design evolution through constant pursuit for ultimate convenience offers a different kind of beauty compared to that of decorations designed with particular intensions. \nOpening Event\nThe opening reception will happen onWednesday\, October 3rd at RESOBOX Chelsea\, at 5:30pm featuring a musical performance by Sumire Hirotsuru and Eiko Kano on violins. \nThis music event is curated by Masatora Goya. \n\n6:00pm – Sumire Hirotsuru\n6:45pm – Eiko Kano\n\nGuest Curator\nYuki Ideguchi (born 1986) is an artist and curator. He does not only produce art works but also curates several exhibitions and has expanded his world. He received both a BFA (2011) and MFA (2013) in Japanese Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts. SUMMARY:Echos from Ancient Japan ~A tribute concert to a Courtly Poet of the 8th century 額田王 Princess Nukata~
DESCRIPTION:In the middle of the 8th century\, a collection of 10\,000 songs was compiled in Japan. Manyoshu (Ten Thousand Leaves) is unique because of the diverse background of the over 4500 poets\, ranging from noblemen to commoners. The most notable among them is Princess Nukata\, who was loved by two princes influential in founding ancient Japan known as Yamato. Through her gift for song writing\, she successfully lived through these turbulent times. This concert is a tribute to this remarkable female poet. It is also the US premiere of the music composed by Tomoki Jiromaru who will be present at the concert. \nProgram\n\nIntroduction to Manyoshu\nUmashi-Kuni (Beautiful Country) for solo piano\nTwo songs by Prince Shiki for clarinet and piano\nHaru-no-Sono (Spring Garden) for solo clarinet\nSong cycle “Inishie ni Kouramu Tori (The Bird Longs for the Past)” by Princess Nukata for mezzo Soprano and piano\n\nPerformers\nMika Shigematsu (Mezzo Soprano)\nTomoki Jiromaru (Composer\, Piano)\nMaiko Sasaki (Clarinet)\nJames Scanlon-Canegata (Lecturer) \n  \n\nうまし国万葉奏楽\n古に恋ふらむ鳥～額田王～\nイベント概要\n8世紀半ば頃、貴族から庶民によるものまで4500以上の歌が編纂された、世界でも類を見ない多様性を持つ歌集・万葉集。 \nプログラム\n\n万葉集について\nうまし国\n次郎丸智希 作曲\nピアノ・次郎丸智希\n志貴皇子の二つの歌\n次郎丸智希 作曲\n一『石走（いわばし）る』、二『むささび』\nクラリネット・佐々木麻衣子\nピアノ・次郎丸智希\n春の苑\n次郎丸智希 作曲\nクラリネット・佐々木麻衣子\n古（いにしへ）に恋ふらむ鳥 〜 額田王 〜\n脚本と作曲・次郎丸 智希\n歌・重松みか ピアノと語り・次郎丸 智希\n\n出演\n重松みか（メゾソプラノ）\n次郎丸 智希 （作曲、ピアノ、朗読）\n佐々木麻衣子（クラリネット）\nJames Scanlon-Canegata (講演：万葉集について) \n\nMan’yōshū Presentation\nby James Scanlon-Canegata \nThe Poetry and Music of the Man’yōshū: An Introduction to the World of Ancient Japanese Song \nThe Man’yōshū is one of the most celebrated poetry collections in Japan\, recording the compositions of thousands of poets across many generations spanning the Asuka and Nara periods. This esteemed collection is forever a part of the canon of Japanese and world literature\, but at the time when these poems were being composed\, they were in fact “songs” (uta 歌). These songs were composed and written as well as sung and performed to music\, hand percussion\, and chorus. The early Japanese poetic tradition was a living and dynamic art form hat stretched the bounds of literature and music. \nIn this short lecture\, I will give an introduction to Man’yōshū the poetry anthology and to the cultural world of the Man’yōshū collection. I will discuss how these songs were performed and what poetry/song may have meant to the people who practiced them\, particularly through the life and work of Princess Nukata.

SUMMARY:IMPRESSIONS TO REFLECTIONS: Painted Origami
DESCRIPTION:From the Artist – Talo Kawasaki\nFor most people\, folding origami usually conjures up memories of making flapping birds\, flowers or “fortune teller” action models. Even modern\, more sophisticated origami practices will involve mimesis\, or representational paper folding\, such as flora\, fauna and fantastical creatures. The results can be astonishingly realistic but they are still using only single- or dual-colored squares of paper\, although printed and patterned paper is also folded to very good effect. \nIn this exhibition\, I took further advantage of the paper itself as a representational medium beyond just folding it. In most instances each sheet of paper was pre-painted before folding and sometimes it was painted afterwards\, as well as being painted both before and after the folding. In addition\, the pieces for this installation are contextualized with other materials to add dissonance and social commentary but mostly to encourage you to be mindful of each piece individually\, pushing your perceptions and broadening the boundaries of this timeless craft. \nArtist Appreciation\nAll of the butterfly folds were designed by Michael LaFosse and Richard Alexander and their Origamido Studio. Kyohei Katsuta for Makoto Yamaguchi and Origami House in Japan created the Yellowtail fish model. Talo would like to sincerely thank them all for their generous support and permission to recreate their elegant designs for this exhibition.

Most of the works are burned in a huge kiln (50m in length\, 5m in width\, and around 2-3m in height). However\, these kilns were ruined due to the economy around 200 years ago. Now\, there are many individual small kilns that exist for Bizen but the quality of these works are not as great as it was years ago. Matsui is currently in charge of a 15-year long project reconstructing huge kilns for Bizen. Each burning period lasts several months to completely burn the works. In the normal cases of creating Bizen\, burning takes around 1-2 weeks but other ceramics in Japan are normally completed in 1-3 days. At one point\, a 85m kiln was burned for 107 days (24 hours a day) continuously.

SUMMARY:Amphibian
DESCRIPTION:Amphibian has been transformed from the artist\, Nung-Hsin Hu’s\, on-going performance SUSHI. To extend the idea of identity confusion into her current circumstances\, Nung-Hsin performed SUSHI in her working environment\, a museum\, wearing her regular working clothes while the space was closed to the public. The photographic and video documentation reveal the contradiction and affinity between the two roles as an artist and art administrator\, and the invisible creative contribution provided through the supporting admin role. \nThe Amphibian exhibition at RESOBOX will include stereoscope photographic installations\, one single channel video\, and site specific fake food installations that will also reflect the artist’s confusion of identity. \nAmphibian Artist Statement by Nung-Hsin Hu\nAmphibian is made possible by Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
