SUMMARY:Explore a New Sake Pairing: Cool Japanese Sake and Authentic Spanish Chorizo and Ham
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever tried chilled sake with chorizo and ham? This delicious pairing will surprise you! When buying Japanese sake\, we would all like to be able to make an informed choices. Sake is a remarkable beverage to pair with food and it is a lot more versatile than people think. Gone are the days when sake was only paired with sushi or other Japanese foods. A new wave of young\, innovative risk-takers are successfully pairing it more and more with non-Japanese cuisine. \nIn this event\, participants will get a taste of this new pairing\, sake with Spanish ham and chorizo. We’ll provide six types of different sake from Kikusui Shuzo\, whose taste and flavor are enhanced by cold temperature. Guests will also listen to a small lecture about these labels. Our chorizo and ham are provided by Despaña\, a unique Spanish company based in NY. Come join us and explore this new and exciting taste profile!! \nOur Sake List\n\n\n\n\n\nFunaguchi Kikusui Nama Genshu\nJapan’s first Nama-Sake\, created over 40 years ago\, sparking the Nama-Sake boom. Being un-pasteurized and undiluted allows you to enjoy the fruity aroma and fresh full bodied flavor of this Sake\, and being 19% alcohol it’s a high-impact sensory experience. Because of the delicate nature of un-pasteurized Sake this product is sold in a can to shield it from the light. \n\n\n\n\n\nKikusui Junmai Ginjo\nThis Junmai Ginjo has a rich aroma with refreshing Mandarin orange like overtones that leads you through with a medium body to a clean dry finish. The relaxing instantly recognizable bottle and label design brighten any setting. \n\n\n\n\n\nKikusui Perfect Snow\nThis Nigori Sake has a full-bodied dynamic taste with a crisp clean finish. With more versatility than your normal Nigori Sake at 21% alcohol\, it opens up a range of new drinking possibilities. You can enjoy it straight\, on the rocks or mixed into your favorite cocktail for a more fun drinking experience.\n\n\n\nOur Chorizo and Ham List\n\n\n\n\n\nDespaña Cantimpalo Chorizon\nCantimpalo is typical of the regions of Salamanca\, Segovia\, and Valladolid. Made using thickly ground pork meat\, it’s the sweet pimentón de La Vera that gives the Cantimpalo its intense bright red color. A simple\, yet delicious\, way to serve this chorizo is to slice it thinly and accompany it with bread or cheese. This meat would also be perfect for a bocadillo or served with crusty\, fresh rustic bread!\n\n\n\n\nJamondor Serrano Ham Pre-Sliced\nJamón Serrano is one of the pillars of Spanish gastronomy and culture. Serrano ham is a type of dry-cured jamón\, which comes from a breed of white pig. Jamondor’s pre-sliced jamón is ready for you enjoy: whether it’s as part of a bocadillo or with crusty bread\, served with melon\, or just on its own\, you will love this serrano ham\n\n\n\n\nDespaña Salchichón\nReady to be sliced and eaten\, the primary difference between chorizo and salchichón is that salchichón uses no pimentón de La Vera. Their Despaña Brand salchichón does have small peppercorns and give this meat a delightful peppery taste. Their salchichón is very savory and perfect on its own as charcuterie\, with a glass of Manzanilla sherry\, or as part of a bocadillo or sandwich

SUMMARY:Sake for the Summer: Experience Chilled Sake
DESCRIPTION:Explore a new way of drinking sake! \nIn this exhibition\, we will show you one of the best ways to drink sake properly on sweltering hot days. One of the most beguiling and engaging aspects of sake is its ability to be enjoyed over a wide range of temperatures. One of our purposes in this exhibition is to have you try each sake at its recommended temperature ranges. Different temperatures suit different sake and we encourage you to taste each of them at a cool temperature at this exhibition. We will exhibit six kinds of sake each of which have strong features and flavors and are best drunk cold. \nSake that is served cold will generally taste drier\, fruitier and with a lighter flavor. These sake will be available for tasting at the very reasonable price of $3-4 for mini glasses or O-choko\, which are Japanese traditional sake cups. \nWe will be serving the sake in the three ways below: \n\nReishu (sake served chilled)\n\nOn the Rocks\nSherbet\n\nThis will be a great means for enhancing your knowledge of sake and learning which one is your favorite. We encourage you to experiment with all the different sake! \nIn addition\, during this exhibition\, we will hold a sake event in which attendees can explore a new pairing of three different sake with authentic Spanish Ham products. Attendees will also listen to a small sake lecture from Kikusui Shuzo. Please click here for more info! We’re looking forward to seeing you there! \nOur Sake List\nPlease click company names (in red) to see their websites. \n\n\n\n \n\nHiro Sake \n\nHiro Blue Sake Junmai Ginjo\nHIRO Sake is a Multi-Award Wining Handcrafted Premium Japanese Sake brewed and bottled in the Niigata Prefecture\, the premier Sake producing region in Japan. HIRO BLUE  has been specially handcrafted by their own Toji (master brewer) to be enjoyed either chilled or on the rocks and can also be used in your favorite cocktail in place of Vodka\, Gin or White Rum.\n\n\n \n\nKikusui\nFunaguchi Kikusui Nama Genshu Honjozo\nJapan’s first Nama-Sake\, created over 40 years ago\, sparking the Nama-Sake boom. Being un-pasteurized and undiluted allows you to enjoy the fruity aroma and fresh full bodied flavor of this Sake\, and being 19% alcohol it’s a high-impact sensory experience. Because of the delicate nature of un-pasteurized Sake this product is sold in a can to shield it from the light.\n\n\n \n\nKitaya\nSouden Tokubetsu Junmai\nProduced using exceptional yamada-nishiki sake rice locally cultivated in Fukuoka and applying the yamahai method\, low temperature fermentation over the course of 2 months. \nThis unique combination results in a fruit-forward and elevated acidity profile that complements meat-centric and richly flavored cuisine.\n\n\n \n\nKoshi No Iso\n\nMuroka Genshu Junmai Ginjo\nSake of the muroka genshu variety (non-charcoal filtered\, cask-strength) is typically only available to brewery staff. This muroka genshu made from Koshi No Shizuku\, a crossbreed of Hyogo Kita Nishiki and Miyama Nishiki sake rice is rich and full-bodied. Because it is non-charcoal filtered\, it is naturally lightly hued. Pairs well with hearty cuisine.\n\n\n \n\nAsahi Shuzo\nDassai 50 Junmai Dai Ginjo\n“Rather than sake that will get someone drunk\, or sake that will sell the most\, Asahishuzo’s aim is to create sake for tasting – to brew sake that is truly delicious and enjoyable for all. Their brand Dassai is the personification of this philosophy. \nWe must note\, however\, that they have no intention of brewing elusive phantom sake that doesn’t sell. This brewery makes some of the most popular and universally relatable sake in the world today.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMiyake Honten\nSempuku Shinriki Muroka Genshu\nSempuku-no-kura\, “Brewery of a Thousand Fortunes\,” founded in 1856 was destroyed during the bombing campaigns of WWII; at the close of the war\, only two structural walls remained standing of the dozen or structures that comprised the brewery and its adjoining residence.  By late 1946\, the brewery was rebuilt and resumed production.  Miyake Honten’s brewing ethos is to cultivate strong koji (aspergillus oryzae) and achieve a umami-filled yeast fermentation; while ever-seeking the ultimate balance between umami\, acidity\, and food-friendliness.\n\n\n\nAdjacent to sake exhibition\, we are exhibiting several sake wares which make sake taste differently. We are exhibiting pottery\, stainless and glass wares. These are made by Japanese artisans that are available here in NY! Please feel free to look at these pieces as well! \nOur Sake Wares\n\n\n\n\n\nFD STYLE \nSANSAKU\nThe SANSAKU is a cup created specifically for the enjoyment of sake. It comes in three different styles\, designed to accentuate and amplify the aroma\, texture\, flavor\, and aftertaste of sake. Because\, sake can be enjoyed at a wide range of temperatures\, we have carefully spun single sheets of stainless steel using our specially designed mold and spatula\, creating a vessel that can control how heat is transmitted to the mouth. SUMMARY:My Inner World / Sakhai’s Sekai
DESCRIPTION:Traveling from a young age and experiencing many cultures have been sources of inspiration in my work.  My paintings are influenced by places I have lived and traveled.  Additionally\, having a mother from Japan and father from Iran\, I find myself carrying both Eastern and Middle Eastern traditions.  In Japan\, I was inspired by the culture and scenery of my grandparent’s hometown\, Kashiwazaki\, a tiny village by the sea\, surrounded by vast mountains. My creative perception and talent was also nurtured by my Persian culture.  I have a strong sense of both cultures\, with the added influence of being American.  These many worlds intersect within me to create my own unique\, inner world. My paintings reflect the vast multitude of my personal ‘sekai’ and the complex landscapes of my past and present. \nMy abstraction reflects my inner world.

SUMMARY:Microcosm
DESCRIPTION:RESOBOX is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Yasumitsu Morito\, a New York based Japanese-born ceramic sculptor. While Morito’s main concentration\, Japanese traditional pottery called Mashiko-yaki\, bears a historical fact that it had a relationship with New York in terms of its popularization and improvement in 1950s\, Mashiko-yaki has been flourishing as “Mingei\,” which is an artifact that possesses both function and aesthetic reflecting the local ideology and culture\, on the home front. \nIn this solo show\, Morito attempts to fuse the Japanese traditional craft with visual arts for New Yorkers as well as people around the world. The conflict between everyday objects and fine art will be resolved with the universal language of art by Morito who was born in Mashiko and has been practicing art in New York City. Morito introduces his exquisitely glazed potteries\, which show his longtime dedication to “Mingei\,” and his sculptures\, Mother and Child series as a new phase of Mashiko-yaki\, made out of a local material from New York. Morito’s work conveying the Japanese philosophy and concept of “Mingei” from Mashiko speaks to not only Japanese but also local people in New York by emphasizing the materialism of interactions with each other. Now\, he embodies the feeling of harmony that goes beyond the geographical boundaries within RESOBOX where Japanese culture resonates. \nIntroduction of Mashiko\nMashiko was officially village certified by the Edo government from 1853 until approximately the end of the the 19th century. The production volume of Mashiko became increasingly stabilized\, consisting mainly of tableware\, and was transported to Edo via the Kinugawa River. The 1920s was a turning point in history for Mashiko\, and the Mingei Movement was started by a group of artists at that time. This movement of ceramic artists was led by one of its founders\, Shoji Hamada in Mashiko. Hamada established an artistic cultural exchange with Bernard Leach. \nAn article in the NY Times dated May 12\, 2000 stated the following: “ In 1920 Leach was invited to join an English artists community in St. Ives\, Cornwall. Leach asked the Japanese potter Shoji Hamada to join him in St. Ives. They worked together for three years\, then Hamada returned to Japan to start his own pottery studio north of Tokyo. In 1955 Hamada was named a Living National Treasure of Japan.” Another article from The NY Times dated January 6\, 1978 quoted:  “Mr. Hamada settled in Mashiko in 1925. His goal was to revive the once flourishing pottery industry in Mashiko and to turn out objects that would be both serviceable and appealing.” Around the same time in 1952\, Hamada\, Yanagi\, and Leach visited the Greenwich House Pottery in Greenwich Village in New York after giving a workshop at NYU. Hamada and Leach’s ceramic bottles can be viewed at the Metropolitan Museum in NY today. \n \nMother and Child\nMother and child has been one of the themes of my sculpture since 2014. This is a great theme for depicting the human condition\, in terms of composition and one which is dear to my heart. \nMother and Child is the primordial image of art. The nativity is an entirely familiar scene\, with the baby\, the mother\, and the father\, and with friends and family admiring the new baby. This is a feeling common to all human beings. By picturing mother and child\, I can introduce a leitmotif that crosses all geophysical boundaries – a figure drawn from the archive of big art history\, art from prehistory to the modern.

SUMMARY:Shironuri: Transforming a Single Face
DESCRIPTION:Katherine Radcliffe\, a professional artist\, was inspired to collaborate with Helen Moss during a time when Helen was studying classical Japanese dance. Katherine\, fascinated by how completely shironuri (traditional stage makeup) transforms a face\, asked Helen to model for photographs so that Katherine could capture the dramatic changes as they were happening. \nNot content to simply document standard\, more familiar character changes\, Katherine posed Helen in compositions varying from meditative\, reverse image kaleidoscopic manipulations\, multiple faces of the same pose in different sizes\, with a focus on the flexibility of gender roles unique to classical Japanese dance. \nAll of the photographs in the exhibit were taken before the advent of digital photography\, and so were hand cut to create mixed media collages. \nSpecial Tsugaru Shamisen Performance\nTsugaru Shamisen master\, Kouzan Oyama and his student\, Doanh Nguyen will be performing a few pieces during the opening reception on Thursday\, April 12. \n\n\n\n\nKouzan Oyama \nOzama has master grade license from the Oyama style Tsugaru Shamisen school. He currently holds Tsugaru Shamisen classes in New York. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:What is Natural Sake? Learn Japanese Fermentation Culture from Sake Brewery "Terada Honke!"
DESCRIPTION:What is Natural Sake? Learn Japanese Fermentation Culture from Sake Brewery “Terada Honke!”\n\nTerada Honke is a 340-year-old sake brewery situated in Chiba Prefecture\, approximately 54 miles northeast of Tokyo. Their sake is naturally brewed using pesticide- and herbicide-free organic rice with absolutely zero additives. Even the micro-organisms\, the key ingredients for fermentation\, are organically grown within the walls of their age-old brewery as opposed to the so-called ‘pure culture’ technique\, a lab-style cultivation of microorganisms. \nAt Terada Honke\, nature’s blessings are harmoniously blended in their delicate sake. Recognized as one of the finest ‘organic sake’ in Japan and worldwide\, our customers embody diverse cultures. Noma\, an award-winning restaurant in Copenhagen\, is one of their clients that offers our unique sake to their health-conscious customers.  Organic sake by Terada Honke is undeniably a smart choice for anyone who enjoys Japanese-style brews made out of pure goodness. \nIn this workshop\, a traditional method of sake brewing will be introduced\, and the pivotal role of microorganisms in the fermentation process will be highlighted. Additionally\, the participants will have an opportunity to taste five different flavors of organic sake by Terada Honke\, not available in the United States. Sake will be served with homemade appetizers made with “sake kasu” (sake lees) and “koji” (rice malt).

SUMMARY:Tatami: From Laid to Carried
DESCRIPTION:Oda Tatami (織田たたみ®) is an innovative brand of tatami accessories born from the concept\, “from laying tatami to carrying tatami.” \nThe tatami invention was born from a long history. It was originally used by the royal family during the Nara era (710) and gradually became popular during the Edo era. The raw material of tatami that all Japanese people have grown to love has an antibacterial and deodorant effect\, while its fragrance has a calming effect. The tatami fragrance brings the same healing effect as Shinrin’yoku or a forest bath. However\, in recent years\, tatami culture has been shrinking by the reduced number of Japanese-style rooms in houses. \n \nOsamu Oda opened his first store in Tawaramoto\, Nara\, naming it “Oda Tatami Shop” where it still stands for 120 years today. He had an idea to revive the tatami in a new form\, where he created a tatami wallet so that he could carry tatami with ease. This became the catalyst and birth of Oda Tatami. However\, other than their specialization in tatami\, Oda Tatami as a brand was still an amateur to other aspects. The Oda Tatami Shop that stood for 120 years held pride in their quality and would not dare to sell goods that were not top notch. As so\, they searched for craftsman who sympathized with their tatami ideas and created an amazing technique for their products. \n \nProducts of Oda Tatami are not inexpensive\, which is why they pledged to make high quality goods that will be appreciated by satisfied customers. Oda Tatami aims for the highest quality with the label “Made in Japan.” They cherish and hold Japanese materials and technology close to their hearts. It is Oda Tatami that brings real value with real products filled with real people’s emotions and thoughts.

SUMMARY:ORINIGIRI Workshop 1: A Combination of Origami and Onigiri
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard of “ORINIGIRI?” \nORINIGIRI is a new type of art (and way of eating!) that combines the fun features of “Origami” and “Onigiri (Rice balls).” Tomoo Nitta\, a first-class Japanese qualified architect\, invented ORINIGIRI when he was in the process of designing a building. He discovered that ORINIGIRI was a fun way to help children (recommended for ages 4 and up) cultivate their mathematical and artistic senses. This workshop will show both children and adults how to create their own ORINIGIRI while having fun with a special ORINIGIRI dance. We hope to not only teach people about ORINIGIRI but also to have them become interested and help spread ORINIGIRI in their own way. Becoming a member of our family has no obligation or fee but is a great way to express yourself through ORINIGIRI as an interesting and fun new art form! \n \nDon’t miss out on this exciting and creative ORINIGIRI-making and informative session! All ingredients and supplies will be prepared by the organizer. If you would like to change the flavor of your ORINIGIRI\, please feel free to bring your own favorite onigiri ingredients. \nLearn more about ORINIGIRI by watching the video below!
