SUMMARY:Chanoyu: Japanese Tea Ceremony at the Table
DESCRIPTION:$60 / person \nAll materials included \n\nReserve Your Spot \n\nPLEASE NOTE: Registration closes 2 hours before the session. Cancellations made within 72 hours of the session are nonrefundable. \n  \nDuring a tea ceremony\, powdered green tea\, or matcha\, is prepared using traditional tea utensils. The series of movements and associated ritual\, based in Zen Buddhism\, help to calm the mind and improve concentration. During the ceremony\, silence is maintained\, allowing subtle sounds and nuances of light that are normally overlooked to take center stage. A bowl of matcha prepared and sipped in this setting will have a deeper\, richer taste than usual\, permeating the entire body. \n  \n\nLearn more about Chanoyu class at RESOBOX \nView class page → \n

SUMMARY:Kazari Maki Zushi: Decorative Sushi Roll – Jack-o'-Lantern & Frankenstein
DESCRIPTION:$80 / person \nAll ingredients and tools included \n\nReserve Your Spot \n\nPLEASE NOTE: Registration closes 4 hours before the session. Cancellations made within 72 hours of the session are nonrefundable. \nHalloween\, rolled. \nIn this hands-on workshop you’ll roll two designs from the world of kazari maki zushi\, Japan’s art of decorative sushi: a grinning jack-o’-lantern and a green-faced Frankenstein’s monster. Slice the roll and the face is there — all the way through\, in every piece. \nEvery color comes from food. Carrot turns the rice pumpkin-orange\, aonori (dried green seaweed flakes) makes the monster’s face green\, bonito furikake darkens his hair\, nori draws the outlines\, and cheese\, cucumber and fish sausage fill in the faces. No dyes\, nothing you can’t eat. \nIt looks complicated. It isn’t. Kazari maki zushi is built in parts and then assembled — closer to stacking building blocks than to making sushi — so no experience is needed. Chef Hiroyo Belmonte\, who holds a Level 1 instructor certification in decorative sushi from the Japan Sushi Instructors Association (JSIA)\, walks you through every step. \nWe start at 11am on Halloween morning and finish by 12:30\, so you have the whole of October 31st still ahead of you. Take your rolls home to show off\, or eat them right there. Both are correct. \nWhat the workshop looks like\nPhotos from past Kazari Maki Zushi workshops at RESOBOX. The designs change each session — October 31st is the jack-o’-lantern and Frankenstein. \n\n\n\nWhat you’ll make: A jack-o’-lantern roll and a Frankenstein roll\nIngredients: Sushi rice\, nori seaweed\, carrot\, cucumber\, inari (seasoned fried tofu pouch)\, aonori (dried green seaweed flakes)\, cheese\, fish sausage\, bonito furikake (rice seasoning)\, mayonnaise\nSkill Level: Beginner-friendly. No sushi experience needed.\nWhat to Bring: Nothing — all ingredients and tools are provided. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy\, or bring an apron.\nBefore the Workshop: Please keep your nails short and remove rings and bracelets from your hands and wrists.\nAllergens: This session uses fish (fish sausage\, bonito flakes)\, wheat and soy (the fish sausage contains wheat gluten and soy protein; inari is made from soy)\, egg (mayonnaise) and dairy (cheese). Please let us know in advance if you have a food allergy. \n  \n\nLearn more about the Kazari Maki Zushi class at RESOBOX \nView class page → \n

SUMMARY:Virtual Ikebana class – Misho Style
DESCRIPTION:$30 / person \nMaterials not included — please bring your own (see the list below) \n\nReserve Your Spot \n\nPLEASE NOTE: Registration closes 24 hours before the session. Cancellations made within 72 hours of the session are nonrefundable. \n  \nClasses will be held via the Zoom Video Conferencing application\, a private Zoom link will be sent to participants before the class begins. The classes will be held in Eastern Time. \n  \nA few things you will need before the class: \n1. You will need to find your own flowers. We are sorry that we are unable to deliver flowers to your home (try calling around; some local shops will deliver). But any flowers are OK! Just make sure to get 2-3 varieties\, and choose what you like. We don’t need a lot. \n2. You will need clippers or scissors that you don’t mind using to cut flower stems. \n3. A vase. If you don’t have a vase\, you can use a glass\, a coffee cup\, a cereal bowl\, or your choice of container\, as long as it has a little depth. You might even surprise yourself with how nice a non-traditional vase can look with a cute arrangement of flowers. \n*If you have your own Kenzan\, Flower Pin\, or Pin Frog\, you can use it. And if you want to buy one\, you can order on Amazon online. \nIn this class\, we will check each student’s tools and flowers\, then help you with tips on how to build up and create your own Ikebana arrangement. \n\nLearn more about Virtual Ikebana class at RESOBOX \nView class page →

SUMMARY:Iei: A Portrait of the Life You Are Living
DESCRIPTION:November 5 & 6 · Reserve your time between 11:00 am and 6:50 pm \nIn Japan\, more and more people are choosing their own funeral portrait while they are still alive. \nAn iei is the portrait placed at a Japanese funeral\, the image by which a person is remembered. Traditionally chosen in a hurry by family\, it is increasingly something people choose themselves: a portrait that shows who they are\, taken on their own terms. It is less about preparing for death than about honoring the person you are today. \nThis is a portrait session built around you. New York photographer Tokio Kuniyoshi and hair and makeup artist Michael work together to bring out your own features\, style\, and character. The result is a portrait that celebrates who you are today\, and one the people you love will always have. \nEach 30-minute session begins with hair and makeup (20 minutes)\, followed by your portrait session (10 minutes). Styling is a light\, natural touch-up\, so please arrive with a clean\, simple base. \nYour photos are retouched and delivered to you as digital files on the spot. \nChoose your start time when booking (same times on November 5 and November 6):\n11:00 am · 11:20 am · 11:40 am · 12:00 pm · 12:20 pm · 12:40 pm · 1:00 pm · 1:20 pm\n2:40 pm · 3:00 pm · 3:20 pm · 3:40 pm · 4:00 pm · 4:20 pm · 4:40 pm · 5:00 pm · 5:20 pm · 5:40 pm · 6:00 pm · 6:20 pm \nYour start time is your check-in time; hair and makeup begins right away. Please arrive on time: if you are late\, your session will be shortened. \nAdmission ticket required (sold separately) \nThis session is part of Memento Mori in NYC: The Art of Japanese Life and Death\, November 5–6 at RESOBOX. For the full program\, please visit the official website: mementomori-nyc.com \n\n\n$180 / person \n30-minute session · Admission ticket sold separately \n\nBook Your Session \n\nPLEASE NOTE: Registration closes 24 hours before the session. SUMMARY:Mizuhiki: Japanese Decorative Knots – Memento Mori Jewelry
DESCRIPTION:In Japan\, the knot on an envelope says what words cannot. \nMizuhiki are fine cords made of twisted washi paper\, tied into knots that decorate gifts and envelopes for life’s turning points. They also appear at funerals and memorial services: black-and-white or silver knots adorn the condolence envelopes offered to the bereaved. Some knots are tied so that they can never be undone. On a condolence envelope\, this carries the wish that such sorrow will never be repeated; at a wedding\, the same knot stands for a bond that lasts. \nIn this workshop\, mizuhiki instructor Satoi Adams\, who has taught in Boston\, New York\, and Tokyo since 2018\, guides you through the basic knots and their meanings. You will make your own mizuhiki accessory to take home. \nNo experience necessary\nAll materials included\nLimited to 12 participants\nAdmission ticket required (sold separately) \nThis workshop is part of Memento Mori in NYC: The Art of Japanese Life and Death\, November 5–6 at RESOBOX. For the full program\, please visit the official website: mementomori-nyc.com \n\n\n$50 / person \nAll materials included · Admission ticket sold separately \nAt checkout\, select “November 5th at 5 pm (Memento Mori festival)” \n\nReserve Your Spot \n\nPLEASE NOTE: Registration closes 24 hours before the session. SUMMARY:Wasanbon Wagashi: Japanese Pressed-Sugar Confectionery
DESCRIPTION:$65 / person \nAll materials included \n\nReserve Your Spot \n\nPLEASE NOTE: Registration closes 48 hours before the session. Cancellations made within 72 hours of the session are nonrefundable. \n  \nThe instructor: Yuki Sakura \nThis session steps away from nerikiri and into the world of wasanbon — a traditional Japanese sugar known for its delicate sweetness and fine\, smooth texture. Refined by hand in Shikoku through techniques passed down for generations\, wasanbon carries a light\, elegant flavor that reflects the quiet beauty of Japanese culinary culture. \nThis workshop offers more than the chance to taste wasanbon — it invites you to enjoy shaping it with your own hands. Pressing the sugar into a carved wooden mold\, packing it firmly\, and gently releasing it are simple movements\, yet each one becomes a moment of artistic expression. As you work\, you will discover the character of wasanbon and the subtle grace found in Japanese confectionery traditions. \nThere is no baking and no experience is needed — everything is prepared in advance\, so you can simply walk into the classroom and make sweets. \nAt the end of the class\, you’ll take home the wasanbon sweets you crafted with care. I hope you’ll share them with your family and friends\, recalling the moments from the workshop as you admire and enjoy the confections shaped by your own hands. \nFrom our September session \n\n \n \n \n \n The class in progress at our East Village studio.\n \n \n \n \n \n The sugar is packed firmly into the carved mold — no baking\, no cooking.\n \n \n \n \n \n A gentle tap releases each sweet.\n \n \n \n \n \n Simple hand movements become moments of artistic expression.\n \n \n \n \n \n Shells\, chrysanthemums and blossoms\, finished and ready to box.\n \n \n \n \n \n Everything you make goes home with you.\n \n \n\n\nLearn more about Wagashi class at RESOBOX \nView class page → \n

SUMMARY:Sumi-E: Japanese Ink Painting – Bamboo (Four Noble Ones)
DESCRIPTION:$60 / person \nAll materials included \n\nReserve Your Spot \n\nPLEASE NOTE: Registration closes 2 hours before the session. Cancellations made within 72 hours of the session are nonrefundable. \nThe theme for this class is Bamboo (take)\, one of the Four Noble Ones (shikunshi) along with the orchid\, chrysanthemum\, and plum blossom. For centuries these four plants have been the foundation of ink painting practice in East Asia\, and bamboo\, evergreen and able to bend in the wind without breaking\, is cherished as a symbol of resilience and integrity. Cancellations made within 72 hours of the session are nonrefundable. \nThe theme for this class is the Asian Dragon (ryū)\, one of the most powerful subjects in East Asian ink painting. SUMMARY:Virtual Ikebana class - Misho Style
