This performance was inspired by and arranged from the Japanese traditional tea ceremony. The original ceremony consists of a variety of manners to drink tea properly\, but to experience this ceremony fully\, it’s best to simply drink with a style you favor most. The most interesting practice would be focusing your thoughts on the tea master for a few minutes without speaking and enjoying the tea in this small silent space. I always serve this tea for whoever sits down in front of me. Red Tea Ceremony -YOU ARE GOD- is always a great tool to communicate universally without any thought of hierarchy. DESCRIPTION:The theme of this exhibit and performance is ‘the four seasons.’ Both artists are from Japan\, whose culture is greatly intertwined with nature and the four seasons. There is a belief in Japanese culture that the four seasons are similar to the stages of life. The performers\, Ryoko Goto and Migiwa Miyajima on piano\, will express this concept through live paintings and improvised music. You will be able to connect the beauty of nature with life through their performance. \nLive Painting: An Interactive Experience\n\nUpon entering\, guests will be asked to write one word which reminds them of one of the four seasons.\nMigiwa Miyajima\, the pianist and composer\, will read all of them and begin improvising on the piano\, simultaneously feeling the musical inspiration emanating from these words.\nRyoko Goto\, the painter\, will begin painting while listening to Migiwa’s improvisation. DESCRIPTION:Airing from Fall 2013-Spring 2014\, Kill la Kill has taken anime fans by storm\, thanks to its over the top artwork\, quirky characters\, and breakneck pace. But underneath the sailor suits and “schoolyard battles” lies another\, more subtle reading. Borrowing elements from classical “monster stories” like Shuten Doji and the Uji no Hashihime\, Kill la Kill presents an interesting critique of both Meiji Japan and nationalism in history. DESCRIPTION:What is kamishibai (paper theater)?\nKamishibai comes out of a long tradition of etoki ( picture-narration) in Japan. It began as a street performance art and is a precursor of anime and manga. Kamishibai is still a popular form of entertainment in Japan today. \nAbout the performance\nIn this performance and workshop\, Tara will tell kamishibai folktales relating to oni (demons) and other shape-shifters in Japanese folklore. She will also introduce participants to the history of kamishibai and teach them how to make an early form of kamishibai\, called tachi-e (standing pictures)\, which are based on visual techniques from magic-lantern shows. DESCRIPTION:Shuten-doji is a mythical oni leader or like an evil yokai in Japan. It has various birth legends. \n“Shuten-doji\, according to one legend\, was born at Ganbara\, Echigo. However\, there is also the idea that from the base of Mt. Ibuki\, where in literature like the Nihon Shoki\, in the legend of the defeat of the giant snake Yamata no Orochi to Susanoo in a battle\, it fled from Izumo to Ōmi\, had a child with a wealthy person’s daughter\, with that child was Shuten-doji. Both father and son had a matchless thirst for sake\, which is often cited as support.(by wikipedia)” \nIn this performance\, Shuten-doji might  be able to be like a score  for performers to create their own images. SUMMARY:Otogizoshi - BOKUSAI -
DESCRIPTION:As the word “Bokusai” (boku is ink and sai is color) tells you\, there are various colors found in the colors of black and white. \nSome go together well but others oppose each other. \nTherefore\, there is a certain charm to expressing these colors\, since it’s both difficult and pleasurable. \nSho (calligraphy) is the result of pursuing the possibilities to express the invisible part through the visible part. \nThe way of life of a calligrapher is to believe this and keep drawing. \nThe theme of this exhibition is Otogizoshi\, stories from Muromachi period (13th century) that have been passed down verbally among children in Japan. \nI created these pieces featuring three stories\, Shuten-doji\, Issun-boshi\, and Urashima Taro from Otogizoshi. \nI hope you feel the possibilities of expression from both the invisible and visible parts. \nI’d like to thank everyone who helped me hold this exhibition in New York. \n \n\nRelated Events\nMicroscopic Journey – Friday\, July 25th 8:00 ~ 10:00pm\nKamishibai for Kids – Sat.\, July 26\, 12:30pm ~2:30pm\nKill la Kill Analysis Lecture – Friday\, August 1st\, 8:00pm – 10:00pm\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:TIME AFTER TIME: IMAGES IN HISTORICAL DISPLACEMENT
DESCRIPTION:An interactive installation and exhibition of an ongoing creative project\, to be continued in different venues throughout 2014\, and included as part of Carol Crawford’s solo exhibition at Atlantic Gallery\, Manhattan\, October 7 – November 1\, 2014. Viewers will be invited to contribute their own stories in reaction to what they see in the individual art works. \n\nTHE INTERATIVE PROJECT:\nViewers are invited to respond to a series of questions printed on 3×5 cards\, after studying each mixed media construction. These candid responses will ultimately be compiled to create a story\, inspired by every viewer’s interpretation and reaction to the perceived content of each work. The artist will incorporate the responses into a printed and painted narrative manuscript\, to be displayed with the works in Atlantic Gallery. As this collective narrative grows progressively\, is read and re-written from the input of many viewers\, it becomes a shared experience of creative imagination. SUMMARY:Bathhouse
DESCRIPTION:Jacek Maczynski\, a Polish-born artist responds in his work to the cultural diversity of New York City\, his adoptive home. Interest in Asian calligraphy has led him to experiment with the pictorial idioms and to establish a cross-cultural artistic dialog through translating meditative experience of religious contemplation of Catholicism into spiritual exercise of Zen Buddhism. With contemporary and urban style to his works\, this is how he described origins of his inspiration: \nUsing an egg tempera and oil in monochromatic manner I make a reference to sacral art of medieval Europe as well as to Asian calligraphy and its meditative ascetic quality of Zen. Taking upon vocabulary of geometric motifs of abstraction of minimal art (I consider minimalism the most profound of artistic movements in contemporary art)\, I bring these three forms of spiritual utterance together to create a cross-cultural meditative pictorial language that evokes a concept of sacrum in Western and Eastern tradition.

Its festivals are as big as Samba carnivals in Brazil. \nTAKARABUNE has pushed the limits of this venerable traditional art: their signature dance style is so aggressive and vigorous that it has been characterized as ‘dance beyond Awa Odori’. OLED can also be used in new\, more creative ways and in completely different fields\, such as interior design\, theatrical scenography\, display designs and in creative products where conventional lighting sources like LED can’t be applied. \nJapanese Culture and OLED Lighting\nTo showcase the new possibilities of OLED technology\, in this exhibition we are setting up a Japanese tea room in the gallery space. The characteristics of OLED lighting match perfectly with the cultural and spiritual climate of Japan. DESCRIPTION:My works are inspired by ordinary moments; such as landscapes\, things that I touch\, feel\, image\, and everything that I am surrendered by. My inspirations are everywhere. Some people may walk pass by\, some may take a picture\, but I capture it into a cloth and making it into something extraordinary with my own hand with my unique technique. \nI have been through so many phase of expressing my art\, but living in New York truly established my style. Living in N.Y on my own was very vulnerable experience\, and it forced me to start from nothing. I would say the life in N.Y helped me to go back to basic. \nMy style origins from when I was very young. My grandmother used to own a colorful knitting shop where I often spend my time. I was fascinated by so many faces that fabrics\, yarns and threads can have. This is the reason why I decided to use the fabrics to express my art. Perhaps\, I was looking for some serenity through the memory of my grandmother. Soon it became my signatures style of art. I use a very thin cloth\, and pull the threads little by little with my hands. It requires dynamic technique like carving a wood or sculpting a stone\, but also requires sensitivity like a painting. However\, when I combine all the techniques into a sheer cloth\, it creates extraordinary sense of existence and illusionary shadow to my art. \nI hope many people can stop and see the moments that I captured. \nGallery\n       \n  \n  \n\n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:The Resobox Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of Nineteenth-Century hand-colored photographs of Japanese entrepreneurial class culture from The Burns Archive. \nThe images in this exhibition showcase the best of Japanese photographs that were made to show the perceived exotic nature of Japan to the West. Several of the great early photographers’ studios are represented\, including Kusakabe Kimbei\, Felice Beato\, and Baron von Stillfried. These photographers\, under government supervision\, documented the artisans\, shopkeepers and workers that made up the bulk of the Japanese middle and working class entrepreneurial society. It was critical for Japanese ‘public relations’ of the era to put a face on Japan’s people and products. They were being exported for the first time to international fairs and expositions. It was through these fairs and photographs that the world was introduced to Japan. DESCRIPTION:When creating this body of artwork\, I held a Kōan in my mind. \nA Kōan is a question or statement used in Zen practice to provoke deeper understanding.\nA Zen master might give his students this Kōan: “You know the sound of two hands clapping; tell me\, what is the sound of one hand?”. \nMaking art is a contemplative act\, in my process\, I created my own Kōan.\nWhat is it like for water to drop into a space where there is no sound? How does it feel to be in such a place?\nI tried to glimpse the space\, to feel the movement of the water and the different densities of color.\nAs the silent drops fall\, they expand\, moving out from within.\nThe space vibrates\, and the colors have a quiet energy which transports me deeper into the space.\nMy artistic inner voice whispers to me\, and I am seduced by the imagination. I externalize the color\, its movement\, and the timeless inner place of the canvas.

DESCRIPTION:This is the first time we play together in one group. All of us are young talented musicians in twenties. We are going to play the original compositions of Kazuki Yamanaka\, who is the leader of the band\, as well as several jazz standard tunes and a Japanese folk song arranged by Kazuki. His compositions combine successfully beautiful melody rooted in Japanese sense and interesting contemporary jazz harmony. In this time\, he first try to arrange and play a famous Japanese folk song in jazz style. \nKazuki Yamanaka (Alto Saxophone) \n \nKazuki Yamanaka is a saxophonist and composer born in Saitama\, Japan. He came to New York in 2012 after he had been a professional musician in Japan for 2 years. Currently he is joining the master of music program at SUNY Purchase College and studying jazz with great masters\, such as Jon Faddis\, John Abercrombie\, Steve Wilson and Jon Gordon. He is also studying the saxophone under Jim Snidero and Steve Slagle.   \nTed Morcaldi (Guitar) \nTed Morcaldi is a guitarist and composer from the New Haven area.  Currently\, Ted performs and records with the R&B group Mad Satta as well as frequent performances with the Hawkins Jazz Collective. He has been fortunate enough to study intensively under the direction of Christopher Morrison and Joe Diorio. \nNoah Barker (Keyboard) \nNoah Barker is currently working on a masters degree at SUNY Purchase College. Noah started piano at age 7 studying classical music and started studying jazz at 15\, pursuing it at the University of Louisville. In school at UofL\, Noah Barker found a serious interest for pop and experimental music and made it a part of his study. Barker has spent time studying under Kenny Werner\, Hal Galer\, Kevin Hays\, and John LaBarbera. In addition to studying music\, Noah spends his time writing music. \nDean Torrey (Bass)  \nDean Torrey is a 20-year old double bassist & composer from Southbury\, Connecticut. He is about to enter his final year at SUNY Purchase\, where he has the privilege of studying under Pete Malinverni\, Scott Colley\, Doug Weiss\, Steve Wilson\, Calvin Weirsma\, and others.  \nMike Camacho (Drums) \nMichael Camacho is a 20 year old drummer hailing from Norwalk\, CT. Taking an interest in the drums at the age of 10 he began lesson with local teacher John Cutrone. In 2010 Mike was selected to the CT Western Regional Band and All-State bands. Since then he has gone on to the Manhattan School of Music Pre-college division where he performed with the top ensemble and won first place in the national Charles Mingus high school jazz competition. Michael now attends SUNY Purchase where he studies with renown drummer and historian Kenny Washington. Michael has been fortunate enough to perform with older musican such as Don Hahn\, Bennie Wallace\, Peter Bernstein\, David Dejesus and Peter Malinverni to name a few.

DESCRIPTION:Interviewee: Dan Pearson and Richard Strausbaugh (Capital Area Jodokai)\nShindo Muso Ryu Jodo – 神道夢想流杖術\nModerator: Deborah Klens-Bigman (NY Iaikai)\nWe had the opportunity to interview Dan Pearson and Richard Strausbaugh from Capital Area Jodokai located in Washington D.C. Jodo is a Japanese martial art that involves a short staff called a jo\, Jodo developed as a way to keep unruly samurai at bay. Because of its non-lethal\, controlling nature\, this policing art is still practiced by Japanese police officers. Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo is practiced at the Capital Area Jodokai. Shindo Muso Ryu jodo began as a dueling art just at the beginning of the Tokugawa era\, but it has survived for over 400 years because it is a superb self-defense and policing art. \nDan Pearson instructs Shindo Muso Ryu jodo at the Capital Area Jodokai in Washington\, D.C. He has a teaching license (menkyo) in the art from Kaminoda Tsunemori\, who is a master instructor with over 60 years of practice. Dan has almost 20 years of work under Sensei’s direction. \nRichard Strausbaugh is an assistant instructor in Shindo Muso Ryu jodo at the Capital Area Jodokai. Long Island City is the home and destination for many talented artists who have taken the time to create reminiscent visuals that express perspectives of the time spent in Long Island City. During this exhibition you will view chosen collections of life stories\, random scenes\, as well as the community and experiences through the eyes of various artists. \nExplore L.I.C. Life\, Time & History is a collaboration of artists influenced by the neighborhood\, various artworks representing L.I.C. life: photographer Rafael Gonzalez\, artist and teacher Gabino A. Castelan\, LaGuardia College students\, with the help of LIC  partnership. Starting August 9 till August 30 different artists with different stories will share their experience\, impressions\, life in the neighborhood. \nExhibition includes exclusive works of Pierre Pullis\, 1929 and Eugene de Salignac\, 1921 with historical last century view on Nothern Boulevard and Vernon Boulevard. Eugene de Salignac documented the creation of the city’s modern infrastructure—including bridges\, major municipal buildings\, roads and subways. Most notably\, he documented the construction of the Manhattan Bridge and the Queensboro Bridge\, and the Manhattan Municipal building but his most famous image is that of painters posing nonchalantly on the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge. In his lifetime de Salignac’s work was little seen outside of New York City government\, and his name was forgotten after his death in 1943. In other Fringe festivals\, as long as the applicants pay their participation fee applicants are given an equal chance to perform by lottery. However in New York they employ the jury-based selection process and so the acts are selected based on their artistic qualities. Notable shows that premiered at the New York Fringe include “Urinetown” and in recent “Silence! The Musical!”\, a parody musical of the movie”Silence of the Lambs” has been premiered in this festival and has been a long hit off Broadway. Every year more than 75000 people gather to the New York Fringe Festival. \nFeinge NYC Official Page \n___________________________________________________\nAbout Count Down My Life\nDreaming to be someday performed in New York this    performance was first performed after 2week workshop in October 2011.We received many favorable reviews and so it was performed again as an official theatre performance in February 2012. We performed for 2 weeks which is a long-run for fringe theatres in Japan. In August 2012 we brushed up this performance and moved our theatre to Nakano the Pockets and made our revival performance. We have topped 2600 audience in total. \n  \n \n________________________________________________________________ \nStory\nA would-be playwright has given his dream a time limit to either succeed by 30 or if not to give up his dream. However so far almost turning 30 he is not seeing positive results. On his 29thbirthday he fail the New Playwright Award which the results get announced every year on his birthday. \nOne year left until the age of 30. The man decides to give  in all his energy to take his last chance to write a new play\, the one play to continue his career as a playwright. He begins to write a play based on his girl friend he lost 5 years ago in an accident. After starting to work on this play suddenly a mysterious boy appears as his fan. \nWho is this mysterious boy?  As his script writing proceeds he suddenly finds an letter from his dead girlfriend and finds out an shocking truth that was hidden from him. “Count Down My Life” is a rock musical questioning the meaning of life. \n________________________________________________________________ \nAbout Creator\nIkko Ueda (Playwright/Lyrics/Director) \nA founder of the theatre company “Tip Tap” and is the director    and playwright for all of the company’s shows.
