DESCRIPTION:RESOBOX Gallery is proud to present RGB\, solo exhibition of the works of Satoshi Tsuchiyama. Inspired by his personal experience with the earthquake and tsunami in Japan\, Tsuchiyama created two multimedia works\, RGB and The flow and the Geometry.\nIncorporating the elements of entertainment and terror\, each work investigates the boundary of reality and fiction in the contemporary society and mass media. Tsuchiyama’s approach to these notions and the various materials focuses on how to play and fold them. \nIt was my terror and entertainment that are made with the various shapes\, their movements and the three colors of lights. \nThat day\, March 11th 2011\, I was not there when the earthquake hit Japan. I was here in New York\, far away from my home country. The scenes of tsunami waves swallowing the towns of Tohoku and Eastern Kantou were broadcasted on American News channels. It was as if I was watching one of the Hollywood disaster movies. There was no difference that I could see from actors and the news reporters. The cars were like toys. The true tragedy seemed to have a face of entertainment. The sublime power of the chaos was taking over what people there had built\, the order. I was fascinated with the overwhelming abstractions and assemblage with various materials\, wondering how many RGB lights on the large TV-flat screen. What information or emotion did each light convey? \n\nRGB is an interactive sculptural object that consists of the three parts. A minimal diorama of a scene of a disaster stands on the speaker that plays a low sound causing a vibration. Red\, green\, and blue lights are above\, looking down on it and creating the shadow with uncanny color casts. Motion censor detects people and activates the lights. Interactive media artist Taezoo Park supported technical aspect of the work.\nA found footage of a car in the tsunami is manipulated and projected on the parts of a car. The flow and the Geometry shows the sequence of abstract patterns and the rhythm. Its continuous births of geometric forms becomes a flux on the surface of the car\, the work wanders around with the questions to the materialism.

DESCRIPTION:Plot Summary: Sixteen years have passed since a mysterious alien ship crashed on Earth. Graviton City\, once leveled by the ship’s crash\, is now a bustling metropolis. Within the city’s high school\, superhuman high school student A-Ko Magami dukes it out with the diabolical genius B-Ko Daitokuji\, who will stop at nothing to win the friendship of A-Ko’s buddy C-Ko Kotobuki. Meanwhile\, in outer space\, another alien ship is on course towards Earth to find its planet’s lost princess. \n–       Anime News Network \n  \nOne of my all-time favorite anime movies\, Project A-ko was one of the first of the 1980’s epic anime films to come to America and make an impact. Along with Akira\, Project A-ko was just one of those films that struck a chord with American fans who were really lusting for something new and unique. Full of parody\, action\, comedy\, beautiful animation\, and a plot line all its own\, Project A-ko gained a cult following almost immediately. The film spawned American comic book adaptations though Antarctic Press (an American made manga style called “Amerimanga” in those times)\, merchandising like CD-ROM screen-savers\, and RPG books\, and other merchandise. For many years after Central Park Media’s first release of Project A-ko on VHS\, it was the one of the most celebrated and talked about anime films in the anime loving community here in the U.S. \nProject A-ko had three sequels\, and a couple of OVA’s that take place in an alternate universe. Although a still enduring classic here in the U.S.\, Project A-ko seems to have fallen into obscurity in its home country of Japan. All for the best if you ask me. In a time where producers are looking to remake all that was great back in the 1980’s (Transformers\, GI Joe\, even a planned live action Akira movie)\, maybe obscurity will help A-ko remain just a classic\, beautiful\, and a fun nostalgic memory.For our showing of Project A-ko\, we will be watching it in it’s original language with subtitles. DESCRIPTION:An Elegant Rustling of Silk\nThe sensuality of fabrics is one thing that photographs\, especially early photographs\, cannot\ntotally reveal. This sumptuousness — the elegant look and feel of fine silk — was\, and still\nis\, one essential part of that sense of “mysterious cool” that is so admired. We can look at\nfabrics from the Taisho era in the form of kimono that belonged to an elegant lady. This is\na totally different kind of fashion show. Rather than dwelling on the seasons\, or on types of\nkimono\, thanks to the generosity of the Asano Collection\, we will go back to a time when\nthe only synthetic fabric\, rayon\, was a novelty. \n \nAbout Washi Dolls:\nWashi is the light\, strong traditional Japanese paper made by hand from plant fibers. The word washi literally means “Japanese paper”. Today most paper in Japan is made in large automated mills\, but a few hundred families in rural villages continue to make washi by hand in the traditional manner.\nIn this exhibition\, the washi was formed into ningyo or dolls by a master artist about 30 years ago. These are not just any dolls\, though. Each doll in the exhibition represents a Kabuki play or dance-drama. We’ll take a look at these extraordinary dolls\, their costumes\, and the Kabuki plays they represent. \nThe Shimmer of Silk\nOne thing old photographs from Japan cannot do is to show us the shimmer of the silk worn in them. In order to get the feeling of the real thing\, we have to look at and examine elegant silk kimono. Almost unbelievably\, there was a time when synthetic fabrics like polyester simply didn’t exist. Can we even imagine it? Join us on Valentine’s Day for a hands-on lecture as we enjoy the luxurious feeling of natural fibers. Find out the difference between real and fake shibori\, between the concepts of hade and shibui\, and about some of the textile designs\, materials and techniques. \nAfterwards\, we’ll enjoy a bit of chocolate and champagne! \nHelen Moss (Fujima Nishiki-no 藤間錦乃) teaches and performs Japanese classical dance in the elegant Soke Fujima style.\nAs a “spokesdancer\,” she has given workshops and lecture /demonstrations to introduce people of all ages to the beauty of dance and Japanese culture throughout the New York area\, recently leading an artist-in-residency series of workshops at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. \nMs. Moss writes and performs concert narration explaining the dances to increase the audience’s understanding and enjoyment. A classically-trained violinist/violist\, she has a unique approach to teaching Japanese dance musically to non-Japanese students\, enabling them to better interpret the dance. \nMs. Moss is the founding Secretary and one of the instructors with IchiFuji-kai Dance Association\, a multicultural non-profit organization representing the Soke Fujima style in the greater New York City area.

DESCRIPTION:Who Was Not Created By A Woman?\nThe mother’s vagina is the portal to the world. Ayakoh Furukawa’s work of vagina explores universality of motherhood. \nInside our mothers’ womb\, we are protected as a singular newborn life. However\, once we enter into the world\, we are inevitably faced with the irrationalities of the world\, and thus forget the original connection with our mothers. In other words\, within the realm of the mother’s womb\, we cannot be separated from our mothers. \nOur mother’s womb might have been an Eden of Earth\, and we are entangled in a constant struggle to regain that site. By becoming mothers and experiencing maternal instinct\, women realize the gender bestowed upon them. On the other hand\, men would never physically become mothers\, and could never possess their mothers as their own. \nFurukawa’s knitted objects convey her sense of loss for not becoming a mother\, as well as her subconscious want of bringing her mother\, who she left in Japan\, within her reach. \nThe women in her text drawings captivate viewers through their strong presence and gaze. Moreover\, they express an universal beauty that differs from commercialized images of women. \nThis exhibition presents the conflict between humanism\, her views as a human\, and feminism\, her beliefs as a woman\, within the artist.

DESCRIPTION:The Resobox Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of Ninteenth-Century hand-colored photographs of Geisha and Maiko from the Burns Archive. \nThese photographs are the original images used by Dr. Stanley Burns and his daughter Elizabeth to create their noted book\, Geisha: A Photographic History 1872-1912. \nThe images in this exhibition showcase the best of Japanese photographs that were made to show the perceived exotic nature of Japan to the West. Several of the great early photographers’ studios are represented\, including Kusakabe Kimbei\, Ogawa Kazumasa and Baron von Stillfried.

DESCRIPTION:PERFORMER \nMichiru Inoue (Butoh) \nTamio Shiraishi (Saxophone) \nCammisa Buerhaus (Pipe organ) \nKenYa Kawaguchi (Jinashi-Nobe – Shakuhachi) \n  \nButoh developed out of the student riots in Japan following World War II as a response to the changing rule of authority. Butoh dance is diverse in its motion\, but usually focuses on grotesque or taboo topics. \nMichiru Inoue describes Butoh as “not only a physical action to me\, it also can be a live being itself. SUMMARY:The Child is Gone
DESCRIPTION:This body of work deals with subjects of loss\, grief\,   hope and renewal. It\nrelates to times in our lives when great forces seem to determine our fate\, sometimes hazardously. This is the situation in both my country\, Israel\, and in Japan. Israel – where an ongoing war conflict keeps threatening the region\, and Japan – a country that suffered the traumas of war and of a devastating tsunami\, and is now still recovering from both. \nMany of the sculptures in the show are of small children. The child is a symbol of hidden wishes\, innocence and renewal. At the same time\, there is an apprehension that what is now most vulnerable may later become part of the front-line of a conflict. This awareness to the beauty and fragility of life is very prominent in Japanese culture (as exemplified by one of its famous symbols – the cherry blossom). \nIn addition to children\, pregnancy is also a recurring theme in my pieces. It signifies transformation and change\, it is both the creation of a new life and the fundamental change of another. I found inspiration in mythology and symbols from different cultures\, mostly involving female characters. One of them was the story of Izanami-no-Mikoto\, a Japanese goddess of both creation and death\, and the creator of the first land together with her husband. It touches upon themes of fertility\, death\, land and chance which I explore in my work.

The cards will be exhibited in their art gallery.\nProfessional Sumi-e artist\, Kofu (香風) Ayakoh Furukawa will teach us how to make Sumi-e Greeting Cards. “Sumi-e” means Japanese ink-painting. All materials for making the cards will be included. \nIf you are interested in the Japanese traditional art of  Sumi-e\, and cultural exchange through art\, please join us for this wonderful event at Resobox\, a Japanese art gallery. \nAbout Sumie art\nSumi-e\, also called Suiboku-ga\, is the art of ink wash painting. Essentially\, it is an ancient East Asian art that has been practiced there for well over a thousand years. Sumi-e shows the spirit\, or essence of an object or scene rather than its outward appearance — and does so by using the fewest possible strokes. Because of this simplicity\, the painter’s character and personality shine through in the painting. For both viewing and creating\, Sumi-e is a very contemplative form of painting.

SUMMARY:Yellow Cab + Wasabi
DESCRIPTION:What do you think of when you see every NYC street being occupied by yellow cabs? \nI thought about the word “bloodstream.” The tide of yellow cabs seems like blood running along the bloodstream in the body. Like fish swimming along the stream\, I\, too\, feel like I am one of the small ones. \nI am like a Japanese Koi moving in the great stream of New York. \nSpecial Guest – Koi \nWe collaborate with Kodama Koi Farm located in Hawai and New Jersey. \nReal Nishikigoi (Japanese carp) are coming to the opening party to celebrate our new exhibition! \n  \n展示概要：\n日本古来の工芸「押絵」の技法を応用して着物生地を彩色手段とする「絹画」（きぬが）という独特のスタイルを確立した岡田真由子。\n本展では、イエローキャブのドアを作品に取り込み「押絵」の鯉１００匹以上を壁面にあしらい、ニューヨークで受けた刺激を融合したインスタレーションを画廊全体に表現する。 \nコンセプト：\nさまざまな国から人々が集まる街、ＮＹ。摩天楼の街路を走り回るタクシー、イエローキャブは、岡田にはこの「眠らない都市」を支える「血液」のように思えています。 \n街路を所狭しと走り回るイエローキャブは、川を泳ぎ回るコイのようでもあります。コイは障害を巧みにかわしながら疲れを知らずに泳ぎ続けます。\nこの街に暮らす人々もまた、個性豊かに、エネルギッシュに泳ぐコイなのかもしれません。「私もそんなコイの一つになってみたい」。\n岡田はそう考えています。 \nＮＹの躍動感が日本古来の美意識で表現された岡田の作品をお楽しみ下さい。 \n \n  \nNishikigoi are regarded as “Living Jewels” and “Living Art”. The elegant\, graceful swimming of Nishikigoi leaves a deep impression on everyone.\nTaro Kodama (President of Kodama Koi Farm. SUMMARY:Japanese Movie Night 4 - “Twilight Samurai”
DESCRIPTION:The next “Samurai Night at the Movies” is “Twilight Samurai” (Tasogare Seibei – たそがれ清兵衛) (2002)\, starring Sanada Hiroyuki and Miyazawa Rie\, directed by Yamada Yoji. \nSeibei\, a poor\, widowed samurai\, is nicknamed “Twilight” by his comrades because of his propensity to go home to his children at the end of the day instead of going out with them. \nBut Seibei is much more than what he seems\, and he proves his mettle when summoned by his clan. “Twilight Samurai” is by turns a melodrama\, a soap opera and a tense drama that features realistic swordplay. The film is a meditation on the nature of honor and ambition. a poignant look at the end of the time of the samurai. \nDeborah Klens-Bigman who holds a fifth dan (black belt) in Muso Shindenryu Iaido will introduce the film\, and give a brief commentary afterward. Join us for snacks (beverages available for purchase) for a low $5 admission fee.
