SUMMARY:Japanese Movie Night 2 - An Actor’s Revenge
DESCRIPTION:One of director Kon Ichikawa’s best known films\, An Actor’s Revenge\, is set in the heart of 19th century Edo. Starring Kazuo Hasegawa\, re-creating his role from the 1935 black and white version\, no attempt has been made to disguise the fact that the leading man has aged and is now 55. \nThe story is about the Kabuki actor Yukinojo\, an onnagata who plays female roles in the all-male world of kabuki\, on tour to the capital as part of a visiting troupe from Osaka. From the stage\, he suddenly recognizes the magistrate\, Sansai Dobe\, who indirectly caused the death of his parents many years before. Setting in motion a plan to take revenge\, Yukinojo uses all the skills of guile and persuasion available to an actor\, not only against the magistrate himself\, but also against his two merchant associates Kawaguchiya and Hiromiya. Yukinojo’s plan is enhanced when Dobe’s daughter\, Namiji\, who becomes an innocent victim in his revenge\, falls in love with him after seeing him on stage.is now 55. \nAlthough the film has been described as “pure camp\,” it’s beauty is undeniable as director Ichikawa handles the medium in a very painterly way. The dance scenes from the Kabuki classic\, Sagimusume (Heron Maiden)\, are stunning. Notable in the role of narrator\, is Tokugawa Musei\, formerly one of the most influential film narrators (benshi) of the silent film period. \nJapanese classical dancer\, Helen Moss who has given workshops and lecture /demonstrations to introduce people of all ages to the beauty of dance and Japanese culture throughout the New York area\, will introduce the film\, and give a brief commentary afterward.

DESCRIPTION:Japanese artist\, Yasumitsu Morito is going to show his latest work\, a collaborative piece of western ceramic and Japanese traditional pottery from Mashiko. \n\nReview by Gavin Keeney / Agence ‘X’ \nMorito Yasumitsu \nIf the work of art is a type of index that always encompasses a much larger world within its singular form\, primarily through the wizardry of the artist\, but also through the very nature of the materiality of the artwork\, then Morito Yasumitsu’s sculpture\, while figurative and in many senses working against the grain of present-day representational values\, also contains a secret record of his youth digging clay out of the hills of Mashiko\, Japan\, the mixing of silica and other minerals for glazing\, and the multiple experiences of working in a traditional ceramics studio under his father’s guidance and gaze. \nThis apprenticeship\, as in all cases of journeyman activities (modern and pre-modern)\, is written into the work. What is not written into the work is the evolving relationship to art in its current manifestation as privileged object for an art world that is driven by the collection\, circulation\, and re-selling of the artwork as hyper-commodity. Yasumitsu’s work contains a traditional bias that resists all of that. What make it extraordinary nonetheless are the artistic qualities that include but exceed what passes today as “sculpture.” The gracefulness of the figures is misleading in this regard. The clay and the textures\, the postures and the sensuality are all by contemporary standards “archaic\,” and one senses not the influence of the great present-day exemplars of installation art as sculpture nor even the ironic and iconic works of late-modern masters (for example\, Louise Bourgeois plus Jeff Koons) but instead Houdon plus Rodin\, or neo-classicism as it edges toward modernism\, all in gentle defiance of the dictates of the market. \nAs no artist worth his or her salt would capitulate to what is fashionable\, and no one brought up through the traditional apprenticeships of yesterday would willingly submit to the law of the art market today\, there is in Yasumitsu’s work\, as a result\, a beautiful confluence of respect for materiality and form plus an edginess that might be said to index a larger conversation with a “lost” relationship to the past and the wider world that includes the source of sculpture in its material expression – the Earth proper. To inquire into this work is to exit through a door that leads back to Mashiko\, into the mountains\, and – ultimately – into an alliance with art that acts in concert with the most elemental ethical precepts that are arguably always buried in art awaiting excavation (not unlike “clay”). \n  \nGavin Keeney/Agence ‘X’ \nMarch 15\, 2012 \nCopyright Gavin Keeney 2012. Long long ago there was a hill where fairies lived. They played enchanted music with animals and other living things. After the fairies were gone\, the tree grew and sang fairy’s music when the wind blew. Time passed and the tree was surrounded by city buildings. The people found pout about the tree’s music and gathered around it to enjoy the music. But this didn’t continue for so long. The people’s selfish idea lead to tragic ending.…… \nWatoku Ueno created and directed a shadow puppets theatre based on the story with live music and performer. Watoku has been working as a theatre artist since he arrived in NYC in 1981.

DESCRIPTION:Our Okinawan dance performer\, Junko Fisher offered a lecture of Okinawan culture and performance to students and their professor from the City University of New York\, Baruch. \nIn the last 20 minutes of the event\, some students tried Okinawan dance as well as Sanshin (Okinawan three stringed guitar) under the direction of instructors. We were glad to see students not only just taking notes\, but actually performing dance and instruments.

SUMMARY:Recent Work- Charcoal Drawings
DESCRIPTION:Toyo Tsuchiya\, who is best known for his photographs of NY’s East Village Art scene in the 1980’s\, turned to snapshots that would reveal more intimate and private images of family groups\, friends and neighbors\, in his search to find human connection and his own identity. \nIn this show at Resobox\, Toyo challenged himself to create a new way of drawing\, using as subjects the people in his past photographs\, and people found in images from newspapers\, magazines and master American photographers.   He selected children\, young friends\, homeless people\, immigrant workers and nudes for his charcoal drawings.  His subjects are larger than life.  Through his eye and hand\, together with his memories\, his subjects appear on the paper before us in a new and powerful existence. \nOpening Party

DESCRIPTION:My artwork is created to tell a story about life and the environment by explaining it through dreams. The reality is that when we are asleep\, what we understand to be real is not the same as when we are awake; but the two states are\, in many ways\, actually two different forms of “reality.”  In this body of paintings\, everything is at play\, everything is on the move. Each part has its own script or job to do. By so doing\, the tale of events unfolds and is discovered — but like a dream\, even that tale may later change yet again\, to tell another story.  In many ways\, change is our world. Everything will one day change to something new\, simply because that is what it does. \nUsing this dream view\, I hope to tell us a new story all the time\, singing to the viewer a new song of changing life and the environment\, and maybe the nature of being.
