SUMMARY:Virtual Sumi-e (Ink Painting) Class
DESCRIPTION:“If we study Japanese art\, we see a man who is undoubtedly wise\, philosophic and intelligent\, who spends his time doing what? …He studies a single blade of grass.” \n-Vincent van Gogh \nSumi-e\, also called Suibokuga\, is the art of ink wash-painting. Characteristically\, it is an East Asian art\, and has been practiced there for well over a thousand years. Sumi-e depicts the spirit or essence of an object or scene rather than its outward appearance — and does so in the fewest possible strokes. Because of this simplicity\, the painter’s character and personality come through in his/her work. In both viewing and creating\, Sumi-e is a very contemplative form of painting.

SUMMARY:Kazari Maki Zushi (Decorative Sushi Roll) Class
DESCRIPTION:The next Kazari Maki Zushi workshop will be held on Saturday\, June 7\, and will feature these incredibly cute Pikachu and PokeBall-themed sushi. Be the coolest kid on the block when you bring these to your next Pokemon battle! \nWhat are Kazari Maki-Zushi?\nKazari Maki-Zushi is a patterned or decorative sushi that is derived from the several sushi techniques such as Saiku sushi and Futomaki sushi. It is undoubtedly sushi\, but the appearance and design of each roll are filled with endless possibilities! A Kazari Maki-Zushi’s design can be anything – flowers\, fruit\, animals\, words and even logos! Whatever your creativeness allows\, Kazari Maki-Zushi can be almost anything. Using various natural colors of ingredients you see every day\, Kazari Maki-Zushi is a fun way to play around with sushi designs. This food/art form has been developed for over 150 years\, and still\, new ideas are created everyday in Japan. And it’s even a great way to show off your artistic skills at parties or potlucks! \nAlthough it looks difficult\, this decorative sushi is very simple and easy to make! No prior experience is necessary as it involves a different process than creating regular sushi. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is much like building with Legos\, where each piece is stacked to make a picture!  \nKazari Maki-Sushi represents an important unique aspect in Japanese food –  not only in taste\, but also in the beautiful visual appearance that serves to please those who enjoy it. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is also a great way to enjoy company\, whether it be friends or family and is especially popular with kids! Even if your homemade Kazari Maki-Zushi isn’t well-prepared\, the process of making and seeing your finished pieces on the dining table creates joy for all who see (and eat!) it. \n\nUpcoming Class\n\nApril 19th\, 2025 | Pikachu & PokeBall\n\n \nIngredients Used \nPoké Ball:\nSushi rice\nSeaweed\nCheese stick\nBeet powder\nSesame seeds \nPikachu:\nSushi rice\nSeaweed\nSesame seed\nEggs\nBurdock or carrot \n**PLEASE NOTE: The class sign up deadline is 2 days before the class begins. SUMMARY:Plant-Based Shiitake Risotto for All Seasons - Japanese Cooking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Risotto is an Italian specialty\, and many consider it a universally comforting food. Creamy\, tender rice simmered with vegetables and a savory stock define the dish\, but there’s so much room for interpretation beyond those basics. Proving that point\, traditional Japanese ingredients are the secret to making risotto that’s richer\, healthier\, and even easier than ever before. \nWhile most traditional risotto depends on butter and cheese to give it depth and richness\, the natural umami in shiitake mushrooms can provide a completely plant-based experience.  Join chef and cookbook author Hannah Kaminsky as she demonstrates how to make vegan risotto that blurs cultural boundaries\, blending the best of eastern and western cuisine. Kazuhide Sugimoto\, the president of Sugimoto Shiitake\, will  be fielding questions about plant-based cooking with the power of shiitake umami. The workshop features hands-on instruction\, and participants will learn how to create their own risotto with four seasonal variations. Come hungry and leave inspired!

SUMMARY:Eileen's Special Cheesecake Meets Miyabi's White Strawberry
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to introduce Miyabi’s White\, a brand of Japanese strawberries\, to Eileen’s Special Cheesecake\, a cheesecake shop adored by many New Yorkers\, established in 1974. \n“Miyabi’s White” is a premium product carefully grown by “Ichigolus\,” a farmer in Kumamoto Prefecture\, Japan\, who produces a variety of brand-name strawberries. It is a rare white strawberry with a deep sweetness and sourness\, and costs $50 for 15 pieces. \nEileen’s Special Cheesecake is a family-owned business and a New York specialty\, and its fans include New Yorkers\, tourists\, and foodies all over the world. It has been featured in popular magazines such as “Eater” and “TimeOut\,” as well as in the “Food & Wine” list of “BEST CHEESECAKES in AMERICA” in 2019\, and continues gathering new accolades to this day. Bonnie Ponte\, the second-generation owner of Eileen’s Special Cheesecake\, tasted “Miyabi’s White” and enjoyed the taste and the unique color\, which made this collaboration project possible. \nFor the first time ever\, on March 4 and 5\, 2022\, 300 servings of Miyabi’s White Cheesecake will be sold at the Eileen’s Special Cheesecake store (17 Cleveland Place\, New York\, NY 10012). Sales will start at noon on March 4th\, and last until supplies run out. Based on the response from New Yorkers\, we hope to expand the product to more establishments in the U.S. in the future.
