Rudychev this Sunday\, September 1st at 7:00pm! \n Artist’s Talk Event\n  \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n***SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED!***\nRESOBOX is holding its very first Haiku contest in partnership with Haiku artist Natalia L. Rudychev! Please submit your own Haikus for a chance to be a part of the upcoming Haiku exhibition\, “Poetry of Nature.” \nTheme: Haiku are to be written in the spirit of the following quote by Lafcadio Hearn (from an essay “Bits of Poetry” that appeared in Hearn’s book In Ghostly Japan\, 1899) \nThe common art principle of the class of poems under present consideration is identical with the common principle of Japanese pictorial illustration. By the use of a few chosen words the composer of a short poem endeavors to do exactly what a painter endeavors to do with a few strokes of the brush — to evoke an image or a mood — to revive a sensation or emotion. And the accomplishment of this purpose — by poet or by picture maker — depends altogether upon capacity to suggest\, and only suggest. […] a poet would be condemned for attempting any completeness of utterance in a very short poem: his object should be only to stir the imagination without satisfying it. \nSend us your best creations. Entries must be in English. Each entry must be the original\, unpublished work by the author\, and should not be under consideration or publication elsewhere. Appearance of a haiku in any social media renders it ineligible. \nDivisions: \n\nYouth Division (ages 5-15)\nAdult Division (ages 16+)\n\nTopic: Free\nForm: 3 haiku per entrant\nAwards: 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place and three Honorable Mentions\nPrizes: Certificate of Recognition\, Books on Haiku\, Public Display at RESOBOX LIC during the event.\nJudging: Blind\nJudge: Natalia L. SUMMARY:ENGIMONO
DESCRIPTION:ENGIMONO is Japanese popular art that has been handed down through generations. It is known to bring luck to the people who have them.\nSince ancient times\, the Japanese has had a unique mindset that God is present in everything around us. \nFrom nature and phenomena to even the kitchen at home. \nMany of ENGIMONO (lucky charms) that remain throughout Japan are connected with the people’s faith and express the people’s wish for good health and huge harvest. \nENGIMONO (lucky charms) are created based on the customs and beliefs from various parts of Japan. \nIt reflects the local characteristics from each part of Japan. \nIt is obvious that every piece is delicate and are created using a unique molding sensation. Each piece is handmade one by one using special materials from the local regions. \nMoreover\, most of them have their own local beauty. \n**All artworks will be available for purchase! \n\nOpening Reception with Special Guests Shintaro Segawa\, Yachiko Daruma and LOBO51\nSunday\, September 22 ♦ 7:00pm – 9:00pm\nPlease join us for the opening party for ENGIMONO! \nGuests will have the chance meet the owner of the exhibition ENGIMONO\, Shintaro Segawa from “YAMABIKOYA.” YAMABIKOYA handles traditional Japanese toys\, mainly from the Kyushu area but also from other parts of Japan. SUMMARY:Unique Sushi Roll Workshop Vol. 18 Skinny\, Flower and Inside-Out Roll
DESCRIPTION:Color your world with these fun Rainbow and penguin sushi rolls! Impress your friends with what you learn about this Kazari Maki-Zushi class! These two kinds of character sushi for this class are made with natural ingredients (as listed below) that taste great\, just like regular sushi! By manipulating the natural colors of each ingredient\, you can design an interesting and delicious sushi piece. The cute designs on these Spring sushi can be made easily\, so no sushi-making experience is required and it’s a good way to impress your friends at any party! \nIngredients\nSkinny Roll \n\nSushi Rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nSeaweed\nCucumber\nYellow Pickled Radish\nSalmon\n\nInside-Out Roll \n\nSushi Rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nSeaweed\nAvocado\nCucumber\nSalmon\nKanikama (crab sticks)\n\nFlower Roll \n\nSushi Rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nSeaweed\nCucumber\nYellow Pickled Radish\nYamagobo (mountain yam)\n\nIn this class\, we’ll be teaching participants how to make the classic California roll as well as unique sushi rolls called Kazari Maki-Zushi. Kazari Maki-Zushi is a patterned or decorative sushi that is derived from the several sushi techniques such as Saiku sushi and Futomaki sushi. It is undoubtedly sushi\, but the appearance and design of each roll are filled with endless possibilities! A Kazari Maki-Zushi’s design can be anything – flowers\, fruit\, animals\, words and even logos! Whatever your creativeness allows\, Kazari Maki-Zushi can be almost anything. Using various natural colors of ingredients you see every day\, Kazari Maki-Zushi is a fun way to play around with sushi designs. This food/art form has been developed for over 150 years\, and still\, new ideas are created everyday in Japan. And it’s even a great way to show off your artistic skills at parties or potlucks! \nAlthough it looks difficult\, this decorative sushi is very simple and easy to make! No prior experience is necessary as it involves a different process than creating regular sushi. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is much like building with Legos\, where each piece is stacked to make a picture!  \nKazari Maki-Sushi represents an important unique aspect in Japanese food –  not only in taste\, but also in the beautiful visual appearance that serves to please those who enjoy it. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is also a great way to enjoy company\, whether it be friends or family and is especially popular with kids! Even if your homemade Kazari Maki-Zushi isn’t well-prepared\, the process of making and seeing your finished pieces on the dining table creates joy for all who see (and eat!) it. \nFor more workshops in this series\, visit our Japanese Cooking Workshop and Kazari Maki-Zushi Workshop Series page.
