SUMMARY:World Amigurumi Exhibition Vol. 5 Threatened Threads: Protect our Endangered Amigurumi!
DESCRIPTION:Update: June 2021 \nThe World Amigurumi Exhibition is now open to the public and we are taking all the steps possible to make it safe for guests to visit the exhibition. We have officially extended the exhibition until the end of March 2021! We hope to see everyone at the exhibition in our safe environment! \n\nDue to the COVID-19 outbreak and the New York State government policy to shut down non essential businesses\, we will be closing the World Amigurumi Exhibition and the RESOBOX gallery until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and wish that everyone stay safe and healthy! \n\nAfter taking a quick break from the World Amigurumi Exhibition\, RESOBOX is back with an all new refreshing theme and loads of new crochet artists joining in for their new exhibition. The amigurumi industry is constantly expanding\, as is the World Amigurumi Exhibition! RESOBOX\, as a Japanese cultural community center located in New York\, is bringing back the celebration of amigurumi with a new theme by a diverse selection of artists. \nAs the World Amigurumi Exhibition is constantly growing\, RESOBOX has decided to take a look at a worldwide and vital problem – endangered species that are constantly decreasing. Supporting endangered species is and spreading awareness is a topic that RESOBOX holds dearly to their hearts\, and they have decided to support the cause by making it the theme for the exhibition this year! \nIn total\, they’ve gathered pieces from over 100 artists from 42 countries who’ve found and recreated endangered species (animals\, plants\, etc.) located within their region as amigurumi. Using the Red List of Threatened Species published the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources)\, which lists species of animals/plants/insects/etc. that are most on the verge of extinction\, crochet artists from all over the world have used their creativity to craft beautiful amigurumi pieces to help spread awareness. Through the exhibition RESOBOX\, would like to advocate the importance to protect the many species on the list together with the many amigurumi artists around the world. \nSee the unique and enticing endangered species amigurumi at the World Amigurumi Exhibition vol. 5! \nFind out how Mookie makes new friends with endangered species!\n \nIn The Press\n\nExperience A Tight-Knit World of Amigurumi at ResoBox in LIC by Joe DiStefano on About Travel\nWorld Amigurumi Exhibition 2: Crocheted Culture Celebration! Blog by Petits Pixels (French version)\nAll Around the World by Inside Crochet Magazine\n\nWhat are Amigurumi?\nEndangered Kiwi Amigurumi by Seeapin\nAmigurumi (lit. crocheted or knitted stuffed toy) is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. The word is derived from a combination of the Japanese words ami\, meaning crocheted or knitted\, and nuigurumi\, meaning stuffed doll. Amigurumi are typically animals\, but can include artistic renderings or inanimate objects endowed with anthropomorphic features\, as is typical in Japanese culture. (Wikipedia) \nAmigurumi stems from animism\, a philosophy in the foundations of many Japanese traditions and customs. Animism is the belief that gods belong to everything: water\, food\, nature\, buildings and houses\, even technology. In Japanese\, this is called Yaoyorozu no Kami. In fact\, Japanese people often put eyes\, arms\, and legs onto non-human objects and give them imaginary lives in order to feel closer to these objects and show them respect as co-existing partners in this world. \nAs a Japanese cultural center located in Queens\, NY\, one of the most diverse cultural areas in the world\, RESOBOX Gallery wants to explore how the ideas of animism and amigurumi are perceived in other places internationally. \nGo on a video tour of 2016’s World Amigurumi Exhibition!\n \nContributors\nHelen E. SUMMARY:Japanese Vegan Sweets Cooking Class: Steamed Matcha Cake with Japanese Rice Flour and Amazake
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun and educational Japanese cooking class with the Natural Sweets Patisserie Association of Japan! This workshop will cover deliciously soft\, steamed matcha cake made with Japanese rice flour and Amazake\, a sweet and creamy fermented natural drink. \nAlthough Amazake literally means “sweet sake\,” it does not contain any alcohol. A deliciously sweet and creamy natural beverage\, nowadays Amazake is enjoyed as a warming winter drink. Made from mixing rice\, water\, and rice koji\, it is later covered with Koji mold (Aspergillus oryazae) to make the delightful drink. Amazake is made with koji which is cultured rice that has been incubated overnight to produce a lightly fermented food rich in enzymes and nutrients. It has 9 kinds of the essential amino acids\, vitamin B1\, dietary fiber\, and oligosaccharide. As a traditional Japanese ingredient\, amakaze is well enjoyed around the country. \nRice flour is a form of flour made by milling rice finely. It is gluten-free and can be used for a variety of cooking\, including thickening soups and as a substitute for wheat flour. Although only often used in Asian countries\, it is currently gathering attention around the world. \nIngredients \n\nRice Flour\nSoy Milk\nAmazake (non-alcohol)\nMatcha\nAluminum-Free Baking Powder\nBlack Sugar\nJapanese red bean\nSalt\nJapanese Sweet Potato\n\nWe will be offering both a kids class (11:00am – 12:30pm) and an adult class (1:30pm – 3:00pm) on the same day. SUMMARY:Unique Sushi Roll Workshop Vol. 22 Penguin & Snowman Sushi
DESCRIPTION:The holidays are here!! Get in the holiday spirit and prepare some holiday sushi at our newest Unique Sushi class. These Kazari Maki-Zushi (sushi with special designs and decorations) are not only delicious to eat\, but also cute and fun to make! We’ll be creating two kinds of holiday sushi for this class with natural ingredients (as listed below) that taste great\, just like regular sushi! By manipulating the natural colors of each ingredient\, you can design an interesting and delicious sushi piece. The cute designs on these holiday sushi can be made easily\, so no sushi-making experience is required and it’s a good way to impress your friends at upcoming holiday parties. \n\nIngredients\nPenguin Sushi \n\nSushi Rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nSeaweed\nCooked Eggs\nBlack Sesame Seeds\nSpinach\n\nSnowman Sushi \n\nSushi rice (rice vinegar\, sugar\, salt)\nBeets\nBaked Egg\nNori\nKanikama (crab sticks)\n\n \nWhat is Kazari Maki-Zushi?\nKazari Maki-Zushi is a patterned or decorative sushi that is derived from the several sushi techniques such as Saiku sushi and Futomaki sushi. It is undoubtedly sushi\, but the appearance and design of each roll are filled with endless possibilities! A Kazari Maki-Zushi’s design can be anything – flowers\, fruit\, animals\, words and even logos! Whatever your creativeness allows\, Kazari Maki-Zushi can be almost anything. Using various natural colors of ingredients you see every day\, Kazari Maki-Zushi is a fun way to play around with sushi designs. This food/art form has been developed for over 150 years\, and still\, new ideas are created everyday in Japan. And it’s even a great way to show off your artistic skills at parties or potlucks! \nAlthough it looks difficult\, this decorative sushi is very simple and easy to make! No prior experience is necessary as it involves a different process than creating regular sushi. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is much like building with Legos\, where each piece is stacked to make a picture!  \nKazari Maki-Sushi represents an important unique aspect in Japanese food –  not only in taste\, but also in the beautiful visual appearance that serves to please those who enjoy it. Making Kazari Maki-Zushi is also a great way to enjoy company\, whether it be friends or family and is especially popular with kids! Even if your homemade Kazari Maki-Zushi isn’t well-prepared\, the process of making and seeing your finished pieces on the dining table creates joy for all who see (and eat!) it. \nFor more workshops in this series\, visit our Japanese Cooking Workshop and Kazari Maki-Zushi Workshop Series page.
