SUMMARY:Chanoyu for Everyone: Tea Ceremony Class at the Table
DESCRIPTION:Japanese tea ceremony\, known in Japan as chanoyu (“hot water for tea”) or chadō (“the way of tea”) is considered a representative traditional art of Japan. This ritual\, with a history spanning over 800 years\, comprises a mixture of socializing\, meditation\, and appreciation of a good drink\, and remains popular to this day. \nDuring a tea ceremony\, powdered green tea\, or matcha\, is prepared using traditional tea utensils. The series of movements and associated ritual\, based in Zen Buddhism\, help to calm the mind and improve concentration. During the ceremony\, silence is maintained\, allowing  subtle sounds and nuances of light that are normally overlooked to take center stage. A bowl of matcha prepared and sipped in this setting will have a deeper\, richer taste than usual\, permeating the entire body. \n \n \nWhile chanoyu has its origins in Buddhism and court etiquette\, at its heart it is meant to be a gathering of friends enjoying tea together. You don’t have to be a cultural expert to partake in good tea and good company\, and this class is a wonderful first experience for those from all walks of life who are curious about tea ceremony. \nWhile tea ceremony is often performed with all of the participants sitting on the floor\, this can be hard on the body. Instead\, this class is held around a table\, to make it easy for everyone to participate and learn about the traditions and history of tea in Japan. Incorporate meditation through chanoyu into your daily routine and aim for a balanced and fulfilling life for both body and mind! \nThere are no required materials for this class; participants are encouraged to come as they are! Optional class supplies include a tea bowl (a ceramic bowl about 5 inches in diameter) and a kimono\, but neither is required; we will have bowls for all students\, and all manner of attire is welcome. \nWhether you just want to come once to see what it’s about\, or want to set off on the road of becoming a Tea Master yourself\, this class is the perfect start for your journey through the fascinating world of chanoyu!

DESCRIPTION:The April 5th workshop will be taught by Yuki Sakura\, who we’re delighted to welcome to RESOBOX! \nWagashi\, or Japanese confections\, boast a rich history spanning hundreds of years. Among the most exquisite are nerikiri\, hand-sculpted sweets in various flavors and styles\, reflecting nature’s beauty and often modeled on seasonal scenes. These edible works of art are famous worldwide and accessible to everyone\, not just masters. \nOur classes teach traditional techniques for creating these beautiful confections\, from shaping the dough to adding intricate details. Guided by our instructors\, you’ll gain a deep appreciation for this ancient art form. \n\nIn this session\, you will create three different cherry blossom (桜) designs—an iconic symbol of spring in Japan. Through shaping petals\, layering colors\, and capturing the softness of the season\, you will bring springtime to life with your own hands.\nYou will learn the characteristics of Nerikiri\, its ingredients\, and traditional techniques while crafting your own original designs. This workshop offers more than the joy of tasting Wagashi; it gives you the experience of creating edible art\, engaging your senses of sight\, touch\, and taste. Simple hand movements— pressing\, pinching\, layering — become acts of sculpture and painting\, turning the creative process itself into an artistic experience. Through this hands-on practice\, you will discover the unique beauty of Japanese food culture.\nAt the end of the class\, you’ll take home the Nerikiri you lovingly crafted yourself. DESCRIPTION:  \n“If we study Japanese art\, we see a man who is undoubtedly wise\, philosophic and intelligent\, who spends his time doing what? …\nHe studies a single blade of grass.” \n-Vincent van Gogh \nSumi-e\, also called Suibokuga\, is the art of ink wash-painting. Characteristically\, it is an East Asian art\, and has been practiced there for well over a thousand years. Sumi-e depicts the spirit or essence of an object or scene rather than its outward appearance — and does so in the fewest possible strokes. Because of this simplicity\, the painter’s character and personality come through in his/her work. In both viewing and creating\, Sumi-e is a very contemplative form of painting. \nIn this class at RESOBOX\, a Japanese cultural center in New York\, all students will start from the basics of ink-wash painting\, such as how to hold a brush.
