Taisan Tanaka is Japanese style painter. He newest exhibition “妖怪展 -NANKAYOUKAI-” at RESOBOX East Village revolves around the mythical Youkai creatures of Japan. The exhibition totals around 40 paintings depicting Youkai with Japanese letters.
What is Youkai?
It has long been told in Japan that when one encounters a strange or peculiar phenomenon he/she suspects that Youkai must be manipulating this.
It is said that Youkai not only punishes people for their laziness and selfishness but also teaches them to take good care of things and to respect nature and environment. Many Japanese have long been familiar with Youkai.
About the Artist
Taisan Tanaka is a contemporary Japanese artist. He specializes in the fusion of drawing calligraphy. His works have been performanced in the U.S. Department of Defense in Japan, and Klingspor Museum (Museum of contemporary calligraphy) in Germany among others.
Tanaka is also teaching Sumi-e (Japanese ink painting) classes on Mondays at the RESOBOX Gallery & Cafe location.
