About the Artist
Henry Minata
My name is Henry Minata, and I'm a contemporary street artist. My work is a hybrid of post-modern surrealism with little touch of urban-art contemporary style, inspired mostly from Japanese pop culture. I'm a full time independent artist and freelance illustrator.
I started drawing from very first moment my fingers touched a pencil and paper when I was baby. I didn't go to school for art, but when I was kid, learned mostly from TV programs that teach children how to draw. I also loved watching cartoon movies when I was kid, especially those movies made by Hayao Miyazaki.
Unfortunately, art is not a popular thing in the country where I was born -- Indonesia. That's what triggered my coming to New York. I wanted to try to self-publish my art here. I feel lucky, because here my art can grow and get more respect, especially from those who love Japanese pop culture like I do. I love Japanese art. I have too many favorite artists from Japan to be able to name them, but my most favorite artists are Hayao Miyazaki and Junko Mizuno. Why? Simply because they are the best!!
My hope for the future is that my art will grow bigger and bigger, earning more recognition, not only in the US, but in the whole world. And lastly, I thank God for this Gift.
