Have you heard of “Charaben” before?

The power of kawaii food culture

Japanese cuisine is not only yummy and healthy but also cute or “kawaii.” Nowadays, charaben is getting popular in Japan especially mothers with small kids. Charaben is a shortened form of character bento. Charaben creators put a lot of effort into making colorful and cute charaben so that they can take cute pictures on share them on their social media accounts. Many Japanese moms are dedicating their time to make cute characters for their kids to enjoy and eat.

Have you ever tried chilled sake with chorizo and ham? This delicious pairing will surprise you! When buying Japanese sake, we would all like to be able to make an informed choices. Sake is a remarkable beverage to pair with food and it is a lot more versatile than people think. Gone are the days when sake was only paired with sushi or other Japanese foods. A new wave of young, innovative risk-takers are successfully pairing it more and more with non-Japanese cuisine.

In this event, participants will get a taste of this new pairing, sake with Spanish ham and chorizo. We’ll provide six types of different sake from Kikusui Shuzo, whose taste and flavor are enhanced by cold temperature. Guests will also listen to a small lecture about these labels. Our chorizo and ham are provided by Despaña, a unique Spanish company based in NY. Come join us and explore this new and exciting taste profile!!

Our Sake List

Funaguchi Kikusui Nama Genshu

Japan’s first Nama-Sake, created over 40 years ago, sparking the Nama-Sake boom. Being un-pasteurized and undiluted allows you to enjoy the fruity aroma and fresh full bodied flavor of this Sake, and being 19% alcohol it’s a high-impact sensory experience. Because of the delicate nature of un-pasteurized Sake this product is sold in a can to shield it from the light.

Kikusui Junmai Ginjo

This Junmai Ginjo has a rich aroma with refreshing Mandarin orange like overtones that leads you through with a medium body to a clean dry finish. The relaxing instantly recognizable bottle and label design brighten any setting.

Kikusui Perfect Snow

This Nigori Sake has a full-bodied dynamic taste with a crisp clean finish. With more versatility than your normal Nigori Sake at 21% alcohol, it opens up a range of new drinking possibilities. You can enjoy it straight, on the rocks or mixed into your favorite cocktail for a more fun drinking experience.

Our Chorizo and Ham List

Despaña Cantimpalo Chorizon

Cantimpalo is typical of the regions of Salamanca, Segovia, and Valladolid. Made using thickly ground pork meat, it’s the sweet pimentón de La Vera that gives the Cantimpalo its intense bright red color. A simple, yet delicious, way to serve this chorizo is to slice it thinly and accompany it with bread or cheese. This meat would also be perfect for a bocadillo or served with crusty, fresh rustic bread!

Jamondor Serrano Ham Pre-Sliced

Jamón Serrano is one of the pillars of Spanish gastronomy and culture. Serrano ham is a type of dry-cured jamón, which comes from a breed of white pig. Jamondor’s pre-sliced jamón is ready for you enjoy: whether it’s as part of a bocadillo or with crusty bread, served with melon, or just on its own, you will love this serrano ham

Despaña Salchichón

Ready to be sliced and eaten, the primary difference between chorizo and salchichón is that salchichón uses no pimentón de La Vera. Their Despaña Brand salchichón does have small peppercorns and give this meat a delightful peppery taste. Their salchichón is very savory and perfect on its own as charcuterie, with a glass of Manzanilla sherry, or as part of a bocadillo or sandwich
