About the Performance
Samurai Shakespeare “R and J” is a retelling of “Romeo and Juliet” set in Japanese Samurai period.
This version opens with the last scene of the original “Romeo and Juliet” where the parents of the young couple find their bodies, hand in hand. Using flashbacks to the various incidents and juxtaposing different moments of the play, it clarifies the cause and effect of the entire play and heightens the poetry and drama.
All the characters are converted into Japanese samurai characters, emphasizing unique Japanese sentiments and philosophy surrounding the sword culture. Interlaced with exciting Japanese sword-fighting, contemporary Japanese music, and powerful sword dance by the ensemble to express the war between two houses, Samurai Shakespeare “R and J” is a visually stimulating entertainment inspired by a classic story.
