In December 2021, we held an in-person Sumi-e class at RESOBOX East Village for the first time in almost two years.
Due to COVID-19, the class shifted to virtual meetings after its last in-person session in March 2020. When we announced the event on our website, it was so popular that the 15 reservation slots were filled immediately. The next class will be held on January 25th, so please make a reservation and join us!
The instructor for this class is Ms. Kofu Furukawa, an ink painting artist who has been working in New York since 2000. Each class lasts about 75 minutes, and you will learn how to use a brush, shade with ink, balance your painting, and complete about three pieces of work in that time.
Participants include single people and couples, and were largely young people in their twenties and thirties. They carefully drew the month’s theme, “Dragons of Asia,” using Sumi ink and brushes.
The in-person class is held on the second Tuesday of the month, and the subject of each class changes to reflect seasonal themes. The theme for January is “Dragons of Asia” and the theme for February is “Plum Blossoms and Japanese Songbirds.” This class is also an excellent and unusual sightseeing activity, so please stop by if you are visiting New York!
