Kumiko Woodworking: Japanese Joinery – Flower Vase (Ichirin-zashi)

For our first Kumiko Woodworking class on August 2nd, you’ll build the ichirin-zashi — a hanging wooden flower vase.

You’ll first learn what kumiko is, then practice all three foundation patterns — asa-no-ha (hemp leaf), rindō (gentian), and goma (sesame). You’ll build each one in the same practice frame and take it apart to try the next, then keep the single pattern you like best. Finally, you’ll use what you’ve learned to design your own arrangement inside the ichirin-zashi flower vase, which has a clear acrylic back that doubles as a display stand.

All kits are handcrafted by Ōminato Bunkichi Shoten, a kumiko atelier in Niigata, Japan. Space is limited, so early registration is recommended.
