On May 4, 2023, the “48th New York Japanese Study Session” was held at RESOBOX East Village.
This event brings together Japanese individuals who work in all manner of industries, who are currently based in New York. It is regularly held as a forum for discussing and exchanging ideas on specialized fields, and one or two speakers are invited each time to address the group. Over the course of these sessions, representatives from such varied fields such as law, government, the arts, sciences, and business have taken the stage.
The guest speaker for this past session was Ms. Yuuki Hong, a journalist and the Silicon Valley branch chief of NewsPicks. The theme of her lecture was “What is my strength? Becoming a unique expert.” Drawing from her experience working at NewsPicks, she discussed methods for making a name for oneself in a global market, and approaches to discovering and nurturing one’s uniqueness.
The audience was made up of twenty individuals from many different fields of work, nearly filling up the venue. During the networking session that followed the lecture, participants actively engaged in conversations and made new connections with those they had not met before.
One particularly memorable part of the lecture emphasized the importance of combining one’s passions and one’s strengths, figuring out what sets you apart from the crowd, and taking action as the path to success.
The “New York Japanese Study Session” faced a temporary hiatus due to the impact of the pandemic, as many of the founding members had to leave New York and return home. However, it was resumed under the leadership of RESOBOX President, Takashi Ikezawa, along with other dedicated individuals. Since March of 2022, it has been run as the “Newly Revitalized NY Japanese Study Session.” RESOBOX provides its own space to facilitate networking and mutual learning between Japanese professionals in New York from various fields, aiming to establish a foundation for new business ventures and research projects.
